Europe Map please!

But wait.. that's in 1.3x1 scale, isn't it? The way I understand, it has to be 1.6x1, otherwise civ will crash?
Nope, Civ map can be any dimension (greater than 0). Well, there might be a max cap but I don't know. I've heard if you make the map taller than 128 plots or so it messes up the texture in Globe View.

Also, could you include maybe 2-3 pixels more to the north? Just enough for units to walk between Sweden/Finland, as it wouldn't be much of a bother to make (unless you're using the WB already).
Sorry, the map itself was finished a while ago. ;) Only thing left now is resources. I can post my source BMP images along with the map later so that people can modify them and use my utility to make a new map from it as thy so desire.

Ok, another question to throw out there for opinions. I'm working on a Europe map that includes the Black Sea. In CivIV, you can't navigate diagonals between land like you could in CivII. Thus, one either has to choose:

1) A water-based connection between the Black and Aegean Seas which as a result prevents land-based movement.

or/

2) A land-based setup involving a river connecting the two most likely. This solution obviously prevents naval units from moving from one sea to the other and effectively cuts off the Black Sea.

Personally, I would like to see the ability for naval vessels to actually move from the Mediterranean up into the Black Sea and vice versa. Any other opinions?

Barring the bridge idea I would prefer it be water. I remember back in Heroditus he talks about how the Persians spent an exorbidant amount of time trying to bridge it and how if the bridge was destroyed it was just uncrossable.

The problem is that there should either be one city as a bridge for both land & sea units OR two cities with a tile of coast between them. But as cities have to be atleast 2 tiles away from each other, I'm heavily on the landbridge with maybe a few fish & wheat as in incentive to build there.

Lehawk: Pretty nice map I must say, to bad its so big = slow and choppy endgame.

Would be nice if there where more resources even if its not historicly accurate.

I played one full game as germany but it seems this scen/map as an built-in timerace ending my game way to early (18th century)

Otherwise it is a great fun map, thanks!

Trip: How is your euro map going? Would love to try a smaller than huge map for a change.

That's odd, I have played through twice. Normal ended in the 1980's, and fast ended in the 2030's. Both were space race finishes.

Would be nice if there where more resources even if its not historicly accurate.

I did add some more non-strategic resources (fish and cows mainly) on version 2. Everyone's start area should have the resources needed for their unique unit. Germany got more food in particular, and I did add some copper near Berlin. (hint: Berlin should build south to the mountains before going east) I might add more hills too, but anything specific I can change if you want to elaborate (Berlin was always 2nd-4th on my simulations).

I'm going to make a smaller, Rome vs. Carthage map soon. I really like playing as the Romans, but on most maps they get shafted on real estate. So I guess I went a bit crazy on the scale, and it won't happen again!

I've only been playing this map lately as the Romans. Big challenge! I love it! most fun map in civ!

Where can I download version 2?

Lehawk: Im going to play the new version now and Ill get back with constructive feedback. Hope you dont think Im just whining, I really like this map you made! :)

Hoping that someone in the near future makes a Eurocentric-mod. Like a freegame from ancient to future with eurocentric techs, resources, units. Dont know why I love playing on a euromap, always have in civ II, III (no custommaps in civ I), just think that the look of the map suits me.

Hello!
I just want to add my vote for a normal (smaller) Europe map. I haven't played Lehawk's map yet (just downloaded it) but from my experience with the huge maps I know that the game starts to get slower in the modern age.
So if anyone can make a normal Europe map that would be great!

I was working on a smaller Europe map over the weekend. Mostly everything is done except Russia, which is a big chunck of the map. The map will also include North Africa and most of the Near East. I should be able to finish it sometime this weekend.

Well, Lehawk, I did play on both the older and newer maps, and I must say it's good. (Especially the second one.) To me it feels like there is just too much forest in Eastern Europe and Russia, although they do have a lot of forests. I think a little variety would be nice. I'm not sure though, because the Russians are always at the top of the list. I guess the forest is a big help. I have only played it as the Germans, but I did like map overall (mainly the new copper near the Alps!) :goodjob:

Oh, and why do the Greeks always attack me?!?! They are always the worst off yet they attack me! Crazy Civ IV

Lehawk: Played as germany on monarch difficulty map v.2, at 1696AD I get a wierd "100 turns left" message, whats up with this, never get em on ordinary games.

This happend on my first game as well endning in a time victory for russia, Im currently leading this game so I guess Ill get the win but rather play it out to the 20th century.

Map suggestions: remove maybe 10-15 titles from the east, these parts dont seems to be necessery.

Hmm, I've never got that and I check all versions I have... Are you playing epic level? I removed "GameTurn=43" and put the age back to ancient, I don't know how they changed. I ask about "MaxTurns=430", but I get that on every huge "normal speed" map I create. I'll try setting it to 0, but that might remove the timer victory (which is supposed to be 2050 I thought).

Hmmm, that would kill the Persians. I may turn some of the north east into tundra, but I don't want to kill a whole civ over it. Maybe I can find a way to make an empty tile, or just make it all uninhabitable. I'll make a topic on how I could get rid of those useless spaces.

No I don't think you are whining. I want comments good and bad. Thanks for the comment!

Can't do much about that :). If it makes you feel better, I just played a simulation where Germany destroyed the Greek civ .

I agree about the forest, and I will be giving Russia a trim! Yeah Russia always gets 1-3 on my simulations too (but I think the population and land size helps more). I'm glad the copper helped :), as did all the fish :). Germany will be getting some plains and hills in the next version, but not as much as Russia.

Yeah Russia is a chore alright! I hope you gave the Romans and Greek a respectable piece of real estate.

Can I be your fanboi? hehe

If you mean you'll play it and give me constructive critism, then sure .

Also, thank you all for your comments! My map will definitely improve because of it, thanks.

Lehawk: Failed to say that I play on Epic speed.

Suggestion: Put fur resource on perhaps scandinavia and russia. Deer resource should be more freqvently spread in eng, rus, sca, ger.

Making east of russia tundra is a great idee.

Ok now Im almost played 2 games on lehawks map, must say its the most fun games I ever played.

Playing GER on monarchy level. Got 8 great cities and having a slight tech lead (18th cent now) and loots of cash due to the great merchant trip and tech/resource trading.

Had 3 defensive wars against russia with no result, the 4th war was an big offensive by me with my new cavalry units noone else had. Razed 2 minor cities and captured 2 major ones from the russians before I had to sue for peace cuz the russians mounted heavy counterattacks with there new cossacks units.

Dug in defensive mode and endured 3-4 more defensive wars against russian (man they really hate me) but I managaged to save my 2 front cities.

I got 30 turns left on the timecoounter and im pending on the top 3 civz. Made greek and arabs to declare war on russia to soften them all up before my huge offensive that im about to unleash. But not sure its going to work yet, russia is an real superpower and currenty pressing greeks.

Oh ok, I'll try it tomorrow. I changed the settings at the top of the world file, so maybe that'll fixed the quick ending (or maybe make it unending??).

Well I'll put a couple in Russia, but I've been trimming them down trying to balance it out. I forgot deer and fur, whoops. They will now be in v3!

How did the other civs fair? Usually France, Germany, Russia and Egypt dominate the scoreboard from my simulations. I think the AI isn't doing a good job picking locations and expanding (except for Russia that is). Greece seems to do good at first, then gets slaughtered. Persians and Arabs duke it out alot, but never seem to gain ground. Carthage, Spain, and England never do anything (war-wise)! Rome always loses a little bit to the French also.

Thank you for the input!
