European Berzerkers, Take 2

@Jack Merchant: I can’t play until tomorrow, and since Stapel wants this done by Easter :), we could swap places if you can play tonight?

Anyway, we need a pre-build going for the Lighthouse right away! On this map, being expansionistic means having the Lighthouse! Switch Copenhagen from barracks to palace?

Ok, Septuple-post deleted. That's gotta be a record! :)

Well, there is a small problem in prebuilding the Lighthouse that we have nothing to prebuild it with (I don't think our palace stores many shields yet).. Also, even with our beeline towards mapmaking, this is still deity level, so I'd be shocked if we were to get it.
I'll see what I can do though - got it :)

Inherited turn: MM Copenhagen to grow again. Set science slider back to 50% to still get CB in 3 turns. We cannot prebuild the Lighthouse with anything, as we do not know about masonry yet !

[all uneventful turns omitted to avoid overuse of the  smiley]

875 BC (3) :aargh: miss the riot in Stockholm. CB comes in, mapmaking ordered up at 90% science, luxuries set to 10% losing 7gpt. Mapmaking is due in 15. Copenhagen, Bergen, Stockholm and Trondheim swapped to temple.

825 BC (5) Scientist hired to keep Trondheim from rioting until its temple completes. I know growth is power, but it does save 2 turns on mapmaking.

730 BC (9) Trondheim completes temple, scientist reassigned to work coast to gain a turn on MM.

670 BC (12) Bergen completes temple, will run wealth for one turn to get an archer prebuild later for a galley. Birka set for no growth for one turn to get the granary before city growth

590 BC (16) The French complete the Great Lighthouse !

550 BC (18) Mapmaking comes in and 2 galleys and a harbour (in Copenhagen) are completed instantly via the evil scroll-ahead exploit. A Korean galley comes into view in the preturn. I buy the Korean tm for our worldmap and 80 gold - the Koreans are on the island to our south. The Koreans are up by at least bronze working, masonry and the wheel and also iron working, as we are informed that they have swordsmen. On the off-chance that they won't get it before us, I set research @max to mysticism, due in 5. Copenhagen starts on a temple.

530 BC (19) Birka completes granary, starts harbour. :smoke: Forgot to swap Oslo and Reykjavik to harbours, it's done now. 17 shields are wasted in all and I promise never to play again while half watching football.

510 BC (20) Reykjavik and Oslo complete harbour; Oslo starts warrior for MP, REykjavik starts a granary. Stockholm completes a temple, set to galley for now.

I'm not too sure about the build choices so consider them all subject to veto. The galley to the south should remover the fog in the direction of Korea as this will allow us to trade for luxuries. Trondheim will riot next turn if untended to - it should get either a scientist or higher lux. There is no need to MM it for higher shields as it is making ten right now and cannot reach 15 (there is no benefit to extra shields when all builds are multiples of 10 shields).

Any chance of a map? :)

Sure :)

And the Korean island:

One idea that came up after I played was to jump the Koreans with archers -we should be able to capture 1-2 cities and grab wines. We will at least need bronze working to fend off their swords though.
We could wait until iron working on the off chance that we do have iron, capture all of Korea and then build the FP in Copenhagen.

Depending on what we choose to do, some suicide galleys may be necessary - France will no doubt get contacts and speed up the tech race in its region, setting us further behind.

Datsekkar, you can take 10 or 20 turns, depending on what you think is appropriate. If your turns are as slow as mine, by all means take 20.

Go Europe !
I'll be lurking you from now on guys !
Gotta luv Archipelago Deity :)

Thanks Skyfish ! I have no idea how a deity-minus level archipelago may turn out, so if you or anyone else has any suggestions, by all means jump in and make them. It'll certainly be an interesting game :)

@Jack: Remove the fog to trade lux? No trade across sea until Astronomy if I’m not in the wild?

---

IHT: Trondheim gets a fogd to keep law & order. Reykjavik changed to temple to reach that extra fish (must be whipped), same with Oslo for whale.

490 BC Trondheim galley --> galley

470 BC Zzzz

450 BC Bergen galley --> galley

430 BC Trondheim galley --> galley. Harbour whipped in Birka.

Mysticism finished, so King Datsekkar consults the gods...
The creator of all has said that we shall have what we need – we might gamble on that meaning iron...
For now, I start to build the boats we’ll need for an invasion of Korea. We’ll decide on archers or swords later on. I’m also planning on recruiting a couple of suicidal captains...

410 BC Birka Harbour --> Temple

390 BC A man who calls himself Erik the Red goes north. His son Leiv Erikson goes west...

370 BC Trondheim galley --> galley. Leiv Erikson lost at sea.
Purple border east of Korea! Only a Korean galley will make contact first :(

IT: The Koreans doesn’t cross to meet the purplings:confused: Is it because of the ocean tiles?

350 BC Bergen Galley --> Warrior. Stockholm Galley --> Warrior

The brave Viking seafarers dears what the Koreans don’t. They cross the dangerous waters and meet Joan of the French. She has contact with the rest of the World and tons of knowledge.

TRADINGTIME – Done after the Viking tradition of fair amounts of trade and plunder :)

We got (if my notes are complete): Masonry, The Wheel, Code of Laws, Math, Iron Working, a complete world map, contact with everybody and some gold! Civs met are France, Celts, Ottomans, Zulus, Greece and Romans + of course Korea. Is this everybody? There is still a lot of fog on the map...

Why didn’t the Koreans cross over to France, they were ahead of me, but continued along the coast:confused: All my trades were based on trading away our world map and contact with Korea. If they had crossed to France they would have blown all our trades…

France is on an island with the Celts (2 cities). The rest are on a continent with Rome being the big guy. We are currently 3rd in tech with France +Phil and Rome +Phil&Const.

The World anno BC310:

But: We don’t have IRON :(
Warriors changed to archers
Polytheism due in 18 turns

IT: Eric the Red gives up after 60 years at sea without finding land...

330 BC Zzzzz

310 BC Trondheim galley --> archer. Copenhagen temple --> barracks

The King silently dies in his sleep...

We are rather isolated, but for now this might be good. If we manage to take out the Koreans, and build the FP there (leader rush?), we will have a decent core, with IRON. But, taking on the Koreans will need a lot of archers!!! For now, we need to get that invasion force up and running.

A couple of workers are left unmoved.

310 BC

I just noticed something funny:D When I first met Alexander, he only had 3 cities, and the two besides Athens were Zimbabwe and Ulundi!:cooool: I’m just truly amazed how Alex has managed from that starting position to actually conquer those Zulu cites! Especially when you look on the starting position of the Zulus (Yes, there is a cow by that river). This game truly has its Alexander the Great:king:

A good thing about archer: they promote to berserks! Great to know a bit more of the world. I don't have the save, so I don't know about the strength of the Koreans. But if they're not stronger in military: let's get to war and a least get some iron and techs from them ;)

Let us see to grabbing a foothold in Korea, then expand out from it with Berserks (mass upgrade), remember: they are good until Riflemen!

@Aggie: Eh, the Koreans are stronger at the moment… But I suspect the next player will change that :)
@Next player: We have no embassies; I was saving the cash for massive upgrades. Alas, with no iron might as well use the cash for some info…

@Killer: Not having played with the Berserks before, I just realized we don't need iron to upgrade the archers :) Things suddenly looked much brighter. Being a mil. civ, I see us getting a great leader in Korea to help us build a FP :)

Following Sjakie de Koper's invitation I will throw in some wild thoughts, hope you do not mind it and since all of you are very experienced players most of them you will already probably know anyway so excuse me in advance for my stupid comments :

Archers is nice but you wanna build up decent amount of spears and Catapults to hold off that beach head yeah ? Cats are real great defence especially if you have to fend off swords.

If you had better food sites I would either take a settler to foudn a beach head next to their Iron site (if you have Construction when landing then you should take workers for Fortress building)

Tell me if you want more tips/ideas on beach head invasions.

Skyfish: I am waiting for a full screenie of Korea before I plan an invasion, but why not (if possible) on the iron? Good idea on the Cats though ;)
