We currently have a Galley with a Settler aboard.

There are 3 options.

The first one is dictated by the fact that a Babylonian Galley is in the waters. Option 1 is to drop the settler at Sto'vo'kor so that we could have a Sea Battle with no risk to our population.

The Second option is to try to evade the defacto blockade and try to "escape" by the Sea Lane. This will get us to the seas to the West. Or it could

Option 3 is to evade the blockade, then settle in the French Tundra. I've even put up a site. It has a Fish and an Iron within Temple Radius, and is on a 1-tile isthmus, allowing for a "canal city" Yes, I know I'm giving up the Northern furs for this. We're trying for the ones in Rome, remember?

Besides, an Isthmus is hard for me to pass up. I've even went out of my way to build "Canals" between Lakes and Seas oftentimes.

Okay, Discuss.

It really all depends on which way the Bab galley goes next turn. If it sails towards our galley, I don't see any way we can avoid it. But, if it goes up the coast (which I think is the way it has been going) we can cruise across the sea lane without worry.

Unless we like the idea of the canal city, in which case we'll have to engage the galley. I haven't made up my mind yet about that plan.

Go to the Seas to the west! At the very least, we'll meet the other continent. We can either trade contacts for techs, or somehow find a way to keep up. If we're lucky we can found a city just for purposes of going to war on that continent - we'll have a stronghold. Sail Westward!

My view is to have the settler back on land so that it is possible for us to move it near Pompeii. Since Pompeii is only has one citizen, it will be autorazed once we overtake it. If we don't make provisions for this city, someone else will take it, and we don't want that to happen, now do we.

I'm in favor of going west rather than settling on either the furs (which we'll eventually get from rome) or the canal (which, as RM said, ships may never use). Thus, whether or not we engage the Bab galley depends on what it does, as I said earlier. I suggest we ignore the galley and take the sea lane west.
