Ever Name Your Own Cities?

I learned a trick here on the forum about naming cities.

I call my capitol - "Capitol City"
City with the Military Academy - "ARMY"
My settler factory - "Settler Factory"
My worker factory - "Worker Factory"

I think you can see where I'm going with this. It helps me quickly find my 'special' cities and I don't forget who does what.

What if your capital has your Military Academy? Do you name it Capital City Army or something? ;)

Anyway, I'm not one for renaming cities, except when I was America and decided to name my capital Salt Lake City (where I live...yes that Mormon place).

 I guess I'd have to! But I never put the Military Academy in the capitol. I always put the INTEL angency there though. Also, the city with the Forbidden Palace is called...... The Forbidden City! :crazyeye:

If I ever got to "Berlin2," I'd probably change the name to "Neo Berline" or something like that. But I've never gotten that far.

If anybody has done the whole America list. can you tell me if Des Moines is on there?

I was wondering where the guy who said he uses Iowa city names is from?

Im from Urbandale.

No, Des Moines isn't on the America list. I'm in Ohio but grew up in Iowa and went to ISU.

I change city names all the Time. For example using Irish city names for the Celts instead of Gallic ones. In a multi-player game at home I got shouted at for having Sabritha-the teenaged city when I was as playing the Cathaginians. Other times I do cheesey stuff like rename captured cities, in steriotypical fashion and end up with stuff like Teotihuachanograd, for Russia. Sometimes I use native names for cities, eg Egypt has Wasset instead of Thebes etc...
Silly but its all part of the fun

I can't believe that Hunt Valley is on the America List but Salt Lake City isn't. I've never even heard of Hunt Valley and I'm a geography freak!

I do, every once in a while.

Most of the cities with custom names are cities I captured, and I don't do that often anymore. They'd be wierd names like (if the city was egyptian) "Egypt town" or Cleopatra)City". Or just my name, with the added town. (LLXerxes town, I like it. :p)

I generally do my best to name them based on geography. If I don't know the language, I simply take a real city name from one in a similar location and use it. But I rarely use the list.

Occasionally if a city is to fall to AI I name it something to spite them... Like a curse word. Or like Romans Suck... Assuming my enemy was the Romans. I think it adds a bit of humor to the game...

I always name my capital "Oakham" after the town my girlfriend lives in. My second city is "Barre" the town I live in. From then on its all towns and cities in Massachusetts. Ha.

Once I hit the New cities, I start naming them. Sometimes I rename cities that I capture from the AI.

I usually don't name my cities, but when I do I either use names of towns near where I live, or use objects in my room.

I use the defaults for civs I can pronounce the Aztecs and some of the others I sometimes name after the geography or resources. I have played America and the core cities after my favorite cities/towns.

I go with the deault names, but when i run out, and names go into New London, Nottingham 2, etc, then i'll get a road map out and look for some names :)

Usually I use default, but some games I just decide from the beginning that I am going to name every city I build.

common ones

crapitol - If my capitol sucks
utopia - a really good city
sea city - a city that uses a lot of sea
sea town - a city that is on the coast and all the ground tiles are taken by other cities
steal iron - build on iron that is closer to enemy territory than mine
leech luxury - build into enemy territory to take one luxury
FORBIDDEN - forbidden palace
moo moo farm - has lots of cows

Some of the time.
Usually name cities based on location, or name them after great leaders. Also, rename captured cities.
