Heya...

Something is driving me crazy... Each time I fight another civ, after a short time my opponent civ signs millitary alliances with all the other civs. It's not like it's only 1 or 2 alliances - It feels like the entire map wants to suddenly take me out!

I have tried to sign millitary alliances as well, when declaring war on anothe civ, but the ability to sign these alliances isn't mutual. Mostly it's not possible at all, if you're lucky they only want half ur civ to sign an alliance. How come they want to doom me?

Final Question! - If I play the Warlord level or higher(yes, yes ... u can laugh), the AI is a faster techer than me almost everytime! Though I set sceince for 100 %(domestic advisor), most civs become more advanced than me! WHYYYYY ?

Cya ... Plz help a fanatic,(perthetic), civgamer!

Bams over'n out !

P.S.: 00ops, btw... how does the leader work? how to load an army?

The basics for a better tech making is this;
More libraries and universities
Roads everwhere for more money
Trade Trade Trade!!!
And do the opposite from the AI in research decisions;
like researching something they will not tend to research first. Like what I would do is start for Construction. Like this, when you research that tech you can trade it for everthing the AI has.

There may be more but ill let someone else explain better than me :D

I see the point in picking the unpredicted research... - though, letz not forget that my trade partner gets a research as well... buttom line, you dont improve your tech level compared to other civs!

What about Millitary Alliances ?

As long as you can keep yourself out of wars, you shouldn't have too much of a problem, just go for the rare techs, and once you decide to sell it,´sell it to all the civ's at once as they will undoubtly trade it with eachother soon after anyway. It's generally advisable to get to know all the civs asap coz of that aswell.

You could also focus on exploring the map, sell it to them all and buy their techs for the cash. You'll get much further if you keep friendly relations with the AI tho.

Trading tech for tech is fair and good. Most importantly it lets you keep up in the tech race. You then have two techs so shop around to see if anyone has yet another tech to swap which can get you ahead. You could also trade either of those techs for money, maps, resources or luxuries.

A key thing is what you do with the tech. You must use the tech to build up your cities, expand your domain and beef up your military so that you can outresearch, outproduce and outfight any other civ. It takes time to get a good lead so be patient.

Remember you always do have to pay the AI a bit extra for anything. This compensates for you being able to put your techs etc to more intelligent use.

As for alliances. Establish embassies and trade/swap to make friends. You can not have friends if you are not friendly. This will help you to buy allies and lessen the chances that you will be attacked.

Another question:

At the earlier stages of the game is it more important just to get roads onto the sqaures that you are working to boost trade and not worry about irrigation/mining until later on?

The reason I ask is that i normally do them at the same time... ie. i just go form square to square (that my loyal citezens are working) and do road then irrigation/mining. Would it be better to just road the squares i am working first then go back and do irrigation mining?

Note that when you try to sign an AI up to an alliance against another civ, they will never (?) accept unless you're already at war with that civ. You should try declaring war first and then ask them what they want for an alliance.

Having a spotless reputation helps, and alliances do often cost substantial amounts of cash/techs to be given: getting an alliance isn't cheap.

I know what you mean, and I can tell you found the right site.
Take the time to read Cracker's Civ3 Opening Plays.

Then I will suggest you to read a few succession games:

Bring your Leader in one of your city, then click on build an army,
then load your army with units you want.

You can load three units into an army until you build a small wonder called Pentagon, then you can add one more unit.
Option to build Pentagon will come after you have three armies in the field.

When I first started I was always getting kicked.

I never really used diplomacy, I just ignored them.
I never checked active deals before attacking, ROP Rape and Peace Treaty.
I didnt really have enough money for embassies, I never built.
My map was worthless, not enough scouts.
I never traded techs.
I would always demand u leave my territory.
I was always weak military.
You can be weak u just need friends.
The most important unit is the worker! I never knew and then I automated???

How Exactly do I "LOAD" my army? I press "b", then what ???

The "b" command converts the leader to an army (Graphic should change)

You then activate the unit(s) you want to join the army, move them to the same square where the leader is (if not already there), and do the (L)oad command (like going on a ship).

Trade Trade Trade!!!

+ get scientists

3/4 of the ideas can be done all on your own without any need for contact with another civ. This is not realistic.

This was the way I played civ2. just start in america without any other civ. Build good cities + lots of roads + libraries and unies. By the time you got everything you change to fund, build an army and you whipe out the entire world.

I admit this is better handled on civ3 but still not good enough.

The 4th idea (trade) is not about trading resources but about trading techs. Yeah sure. Like engineering or democracy is some little trick which can be traded.

In real life trade of resources was so important. Civs flourish (and became advanced) when they were involved in trade.
This is reflected very very badly in civ3. Actually, trade of resources is not important at all for your science.
In civ2 you at least got a science bonus when you establish a trade route.

Im working on a new science model for civ4. It will be much better than the current one.
I already have a new trade model: see my sign.
