Exit Outlook Express. But what will be the successor?

You've probably read my news message. I'll tell you what happened (I'll try tp keep it brief):

I had a virus (W95/Kuang.GR). It was on almost every .exe on my computer. After removing the virus, my mailbox had suddenly disappeared. Also, everything was buggy, even after reinstalling Windows XP. So I've moved all important data to a new partition, formatted C: and installed Windows XP. Subsequently, I installed all other things and I'm still not ready ofcourse. But I also imported an older mailbox, one of 10-29-2001 (which is actually 29-10-2001, dumb Americans :p ;)). All good and well, so it seems, but when I woke up, turned on my computer and checked my email...my mailbox was gone again!!!! :suicide: And with the same problem: No email was able to enter any mailbox as well. When I sent an email, you saw a new email going to the outbox, but no email was sent. And when going to the Outbox, the (1) just disappeared and no email was in there. And I don't understand any of it, because I reformatted my computer! Perhaps there is a virus in the data I saved... But I've installed the lastest McAfee and it's completely up to date.

Virus or not, some of you might know that this is the third time I lost my email. That's no fun! And I do not trust Outlook Express anymore. (I don't trust Windows either, but what choice do I have?) Most important question rests:
What is the best Email program you can recommend?

:sniper:Outlook Express

Well, the most popular mail client for PC besides Outlook:hammer: is Eudora. It has many nice features and is available for free download here:
http://www.eudora.com/ :queen:
There are some drawbacks though, you need a license, either buy, use ads or use the light version.
Another client I would recommend, my favorite, is Pegasus Mail, the oldest e-mail client for PC. It is completely free and also has all features needed. Download from here:
http://www.pmail.com/ :king:
If don´t like any of these you could still use Netscape Messenger, part of the Communicator. It is better and saver than Outlook Express.

Whatever you do, do NOT use :flamedeviMS:satan: Outlook. It is the unsafest client available. Every virus which spreads via e-mail is jumping with joy :jump: when encountering Outlook.
With Outlook your computer sooner or later makes this experience: :nuke: :suicide: :nuke:

Hope that helps!

If you don´t need all the fancy windows and buttons and blinking icons , you could also use Pine.
Pine is a mail client which was developed for Unix and it is also most common there. A PC version is available here though:
http://www.washington.edu/pine/
As stated, it doesn´t have an overall userfriendly interface but Pine may be the safest client available. :goodjob:
I still recommend one of the other, even Netscape Messenger.
You could encounter a problem though, especially with Netscape. If somebody sends you a mail using Outlook Express with an attachment you might not be able to read this attachment because it is encoded in a .DAT file. Stupid MS:satan: only wants other Outlook users to be able to read the attachment. But as I said there is only a possibility this could happen.

I myself use Netscape most of the time, for surfing the web and e-mail. I know several other Netscape users and none of us had any problems with mailing or viruses.:skull:
Another possibility would be Opera. You can browse the web, view both IE and Netscape recommended sites and it has a mail client built in. Download from here:
http://www.opera.com/

And with McAfee VShield enabled you should have no problems with viruses with any application other than MS Outlook:rocket:.

My list:
  1. Pegasus Mail
  2. Eudora (Light)
  3. Netscape Messenger
  4. Pine
  5. Opera mail client
    [/list=1]

Thanks, Lucky. I have used Eudora before; I don't know why I switched back to Outlook Express though. Probably because that's very easy to install. I only completely forgot how Eudora works, but I'll probably figure that out in no-time. ;)

I am suprised that so many people are having problems with viruses and email. I DL stuff all the time and don't get viruses. I get emails all the time and I make sure I don't open the attachments that are known bads, like *.vds or whatever they are. BTW, I use OE 6. Does Eudora allow you to receive and send email from hotmail and yahoo the same way OE does?

This is the first virus I have ever had.

 I don't know. In what way is it different? I don't have any such email address.

Well normally with freemail accounts such as Hotmail and Yahoo! you have to use a web browser to get the mail and then with your email program you get your email from you ISP. With Outlook Express I am able to get all my mail from hotmail and yahoo thru just one program instead of multiples. Why is this important you ask, or not? It is important because I don't use ISP email anymore and would much rather access my email thru Outlook Express because I have multiple email accounts that are for junkmail (I frequently have to get rid of these account because of all the spam) and a few that are for good mail. Why a few for good mail? Well I have one for CFC, one for family and business related and another because the name is weird and funny, and more just because.

I have the same thing, PaleHorse. ;) When I have to give my email address in some registration, I always fill in mclensink@hotmail.com, but I rarely read it. When I do, it no big deal having to look at it with Internet Exploder.

But with Eudora you can do about the same as with Outlook Express. I'm still exploring the program, but it looks very nice! When receiving an email with matrix@civfanatics.net, it automatically goes to the mailbox "CivFanatics". When receiving an email from my girlfriend it automatically goes to the mailbox "Marianne". ;) When an email contains "GOTM submission" and "Civ3", it's displayed red. Same for "Civ2" but then it's blue. (Those last two options can't be done with OE.) So I have got everything I need. :goodjob:

But for you unfortunately, no ISP.
