That'd be great for me to have your opinion about units such as fanatics, paratroopers or alpine soldiers. People rarely talk about them. Shall I assume nobody use them? Sometimes I like dropping fresh troops behind enemy lines...
It'd be also a good idea for a poll. How often do you use exotic units?

I never use fanatics...because the suck a**! But the others have their uses. I use alpine troops in much the same way as I do partisans. Move them around the enemy flanks and fortify them in fortresses and hard terrain where the enemy will have to dedicate useful troops to remove them.

Paratroops aren't bad either. I often use them in conjunctuntion with air strikes. I use aircraft to clear the city, and then just paradrop them on in. I only use this tactic when I want a quick finish and expect the enemy to fold once I take a city. I don't use them for serious invasions sice they can't really defend very well. Paratroops are also valuable as quick reaction troops. For instance, if I found a new city (which isn't yet connected by roads and rails) and all of a sudden some barbs show up, I just paradrop them right in.

I don't use those units because, I use vet spies, tanks & bombers in late combat scenarios. Although I will try the afore mentioned tactics. Using spies to incite revolt get co$tly.

Sure, but I wonder why people are reluctant to use them. I cannot believe they're useless, otherwise they wouldn't be here. Sid has designed well his game after all

Alpine troops are very good. They the best defenders next to mech infantry and you can get them fairly early.Vet alpines will defeat many tanks when fortified behind walls or in a fortress.Stacked with an explorer they can cause much damage to land improvements.

I use paratroops sometimes to take up positions inside enemy territory.Often I don't want to capture a city as the ai or human opponent just uses it to steal technology.Tie up transportation routes, do some pillaging while the enemy spends 2 or 3 turns attacking them. This gives you time and distraction to move the "real" troops into position. The nuke/paradrop works well.Even the ai likes this one.

All units have their uses but most are not needed. Some are made unattractive by their cost to build.ie helicopters and marines. The extra sheilds needed just ain't worth it most times.

Many of my solo games become "experiments" rather than games as I mess around with different units and see what can be done.
A mess of vet alpines pillaging everything in sight followed by a wave spys poisoning water supplies was one such experiment that quite fun.

Alpines aren't useless at all; I often build them. Paratroops less often, but as others have said above they have their uses too. THe only truly uselss 'exotic' unit is the marines. If they were cheaper to build I might use them more often.

I have to disagree with Smash on the helicopters though. In an intercontinental war with lots of small enemy islands, they're the best. I just send an entire fleet of them to take over. They can fly a long way without having to land, and they atk at 10. The damage done from decreasing fuel doesn't make a big difference, and when you take over a city with one, it's back to max instantly.

Only drawback is that any unit can atk them--sea land or air (well, maybe not subs or bombers, I forget).

I know for a fact that subs can attack choppers, I do it all the time. No reason why bomber couldn't, but I'm not sure.

Despite their weaknesses, I love the helocopter unit because it acts as both a land unit and an air unit. Use of them must be discreet, but they give a carrier a ground attack force. They are very useful for quick takedowns of outland cities and softening up cities in front of an army assault. You can also use them to clear out ground units in your way, not to mention stash two/three in a carrier to take ground cities once the bombers clear out the enemy units. Also, they have the same attack power as a tank and ignore city walls.

How are we defining 'exotic' units? Does that mean a unit that didn't appear in Civ I?

And am I the only one that finds Helicopters useful for exploration? As an air unit, they have twice the movement of an Explorer, and with the same lack of terrain-related movement penalty, plus they can go over water without the use of ships, unlike Explorers. I think that makes them worth the building cost.

Yeah, but they can't pop huts, and by the stage in the game when you have choppers, You should basically already know where everything is anyway. Against the AI that is.

I can see a lot of these units that aren't as useful against the computer suddenly becoming useful in multiplayer (which I haven't played yet, unfortunately).

Hey didn't guess that this topic would have such a success concerning replies

Thanks guys, that's what I wanted to know.
To answer several questions:
_ I assume that an "exotic" unit is a unit that either wasn't in Civ1, OR that is not often mentionned in this forum. So yes, fanatics, partisans, or even cruise missiles etc... are exotic for me.
_ I do build marines. They cost just a bit more shields than riflemen but they've 1 extra point in defence... And cost less than Mech Inf, so, I think they can be useful.
_ There's apparently one Wild Brutal Beast here, isn't it? Fishead?

I don't think nukes are exotic weapons, since it's not subtle to nuke
smile.gif
Anyway, if it's your way to play, I respect your opinion, even though it's not a really really subtle tactic

_ I admit that I don't often use Helicos. On the other hand, I build a bunch of Alpines.

no carrier fleet is without a helicopter to spot subs

(carrier fleets also need battleships and distroyers, and aegis crusiers)

AEGEIS cruisers weren't in Civ I, so if those are exotic I use them a lot to protect my fleets.

Helicopters can be useful for attacking far off weak Civ's that I don't to dispatch ground.

Marines: Hmm, what are these
smile.gif

Fanatics: So basically, your like a slow knight with the defense of rifleman. Is this really how I want to use my ten support under this government.

actually fanatics requier NO support... so you can build as many as you want!

ohhh
i guess you've never been faced with hundreds (i'm serious, hundreds) of fantic unites before then :_)

Fanatics can require support in Fundy. It depends on the order in which you build your "free units".Some scenario maker/expert figured this out.Wish I could remember who.

Also,10 is kinda wrong. It is hardcoded at 8 in most versions.Might be level too.Deity is definetly 8.
