When playing against Expansionist Civs, if you encounter a Scout very early (i.e. in the first steps of the game), how often do you kill it? I know it's a risk because of the possibility of early war, but it effectively kills off the Expanisionist trait and gives you an even footing for popping goodie huts, Im yet to break through Regent really so they can still be useful. Just wondering if anyone did this, and if so, how often?

Hmm, you don't always have the means to kill an early scout, so I don't really bother with it. A settler trying to nab my land is a different story!

I tend to do that in C3C, in PTW I don't bother. With as important as contacts became in C3C, killing another civ's scout within the first 20 turns can be an enormous benefit for you. Of course, you need to ensure that you survive the inevitable counter-attack, as the AI will use their extra units against you.

yes, but only if they are far far away. On the higher levels, that could spell doom.

I don't attack other scouts at the beginning. Just not worth it in Vanilla.

It hardly "kills off the Expansionistic trait".

Well it does stop them from finding much less goodie huts and leaves them needing to either start exploring with slower warriors etc. or taking time to build up another Scout, so to some extent it is true.

A second scout is the first thing I build.

And how many times have you seen the AI build another scout?

Answer = 0.

So yes, it does kill the expansionist trait and is a good tactic to use at levels up to monarch. It isn't too advisable at emperor or above for a couple of reasons: first, they start with lots of free units who can explore anyway, and secondly, the aforementioned units might just take out your fledgling empire if they are close by...

I am not exactly sure if it is a good idea to kill AI scout..
There are some pros -they can't get anything from goody hats, but so can't you in most of the time, if you are not expansioninst civ yourself.
I am not sure but i reckon it might be better to let them to discover all those techs and then either buy it from them or when you start your AA war just demand it. This way you will progress faster than when you simply kill AI scout. Still it's just a guess, it's hard to make a scientific experiment out of it :confused:
