Expansive Dreams

Oh yer.

@narri
I found it quite hard to read the writing in the light coloured font. KNow what I mean?

That was because that part of my entry was outdated and wrong (after some thought, DOW immediately was better than originally waiting) and I couldn't figure just now figured out how to get strikethrough text. :crazyeye:

Just a few things I noted on my look at the save.

First of all if wild willy survives the IBT then fortify him or move him.

I suggest we raze this city. If we don't attack Wangs forces here then when we take his last city they will disapear leaving the garrison free to sally forth and deal with this lightly defended city. Might want another cat or 2 along.

Iron Fish might want to build a galley or something to protect its fish....

The demo screen shows that our economy has really improved since the end of my set. Nice work.

I sugest we weight our EP like so (2 for Sury and 1 for Mao and JC).
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg

Uses for Wonsan? Could make a pretty decent Military city at size 10. Would be 24 hammers if all the tiles marked M were worked and we could feed them if we farmed all the tiles marked F. This would leave Ulundi top chase wonders if we wanted to.

We get a GSci in 7. I had been all for building an acadamy in the capital but I noticed he will bulb Philo as well. There is still a religion attached to this. To be really useful we'd need a GPri and to spread the religion. On balance I still prefer the Academy but what do you guy's think?

1. Which city did you want to raze? I wasn't clear on this
2. (There is a galley sitting on our fish tile in the pic you posted ;) )
3. EP assignment - I agree
4. Wonsan already has some developed cottages so I would keep it as a commerce city for now, or maybe a hybrid. Its easy to retool a city for production if we want later. I'd just hate to farm over those cottages right now.
5. Bulb or Academy are fine. I'd lean towards bulb just because Philo is a good bulb and its more or less next up if we do a standard lib beeline. Going caste in the nearish future is fine with me so we can run a ton of scientists in Seoul.

Regarding religions; I like founding them even if I don't plan on spreading them for a few reasons:
* Denial purposes: so they don't affect the diplomatic field unexpectedly when someone founds and converts. I think the religious field is perfect right now with Mao+JC as our buds. Also denies culture and potential income to our opponents.
* Its also nice to build multiple temples in key cities for more priest specialists (or happiness) if we go for the Angkor, which I imagine we'll be building.
* More culture is always good, but I don't think culture will be much of a factor in our game

Doh! I can't belive I didn't twig that was our galley!

I forgot the screen for the first point.

Its here

AS for bulbing Philio and heading on to Lib thats ok by me. I expect we'll get plenty more GSci in the near fuure from Seoul. If we're talking about Lib can I sugest we go for Steel from it? A really powerfull tech if you get it early.

Hi guys. Last night I tried to play catch up and speed read through the thread to get into the flow of things, and I realized about 5 pages in that I am not ready for this yet and I don't want my learning curve to slow you guys down. I don't understand most of the abbreviations and terminology yet, and I don't expect anyone to educate me, that is my job. So I respectfully will step aside and just watch so I don't impede your progress. Thanks for the let me join though. Maybe next game I will be ready.

@Tynion
There is a decent list of abbreviations here: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/reference/acronyms.php
It does take a little acclimation but the best way to learn is just to jump in. If you're comfortable playing at Monarch (or Prince) in general, I would just say stay in and do your best. Nothing wrong with asking questions if you don't understand terminology.

Also, a good way to learn (although time-consuming) is to skim through the succession game forums and find a 5-star rated thread and read or skim through the game, taking time to look up abbreviations you're not familiar with.

Tynion, the best way to learn is to jump in with both feet.
I was in the same place as you only a few months ago so I can understand how you are probably feeling right now.
I second Sirloins thoughts...I think you should stick around and learn here.

Asking questions isn't going to slow down the game or impede our progress...I would gladly answer any questions you have.
So please reconsider your decision to step aside!

OOPS!
I missed Grandads post with the new roster order.
Never mind me and my earlier post.

I got it and will play tomorrow morning.
Woulda grabbed it earlier had I been paying attention...sorry gang!
I will post a plan later on today...

@Tynion

Stay! The best way to learn is to ask questions and throw yourself in. Thats how I got in to SGs when I joined the first NC game nearly a year ago.

Alright then, that was the exact opposite response than what I expected to receive. I will try to stick it out. I just felt very overwhelmed and sat there thinking... oh my god, it was easy enough to skip over terms that made no sense when I didn't have a feeling of responsibility of being part of a team, but once I made the commitment and then started trying to catch up... WOW! Now I realize how much different it is from playing solo and just knowing what you know and verbalizing your thoughts so others can comprehend and relate.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'll try to do my best to continue catching up and contributing. :) *looks at page 11 and sighs at still being on page 5..*

I'll try to explain my jargon when I use it in my next few posts so that aspect is less of a problem. Remember that quite often you can work out an abreviation etc based on the context that it is used in!

Vague plan in no particular order.
Numbered for easier reference.

1)Attach GG to an impi and send to the front lines.
2)SoD will rest and finish off Wang.
I will scout ahead to determine what size of force we need for that task.
2a) I think depending on how well the last battle with Wang goes we probably should just keep everyone together and march on Bombay/Delhi. I bet you five dollars that there is a city on the north coast that grabs the fish and clam. And if there isn't...there should be.
2b) Normally I would say to unhook the horses, but HAs play nicely with our impis!
3)Bribe Mao and JC into war with Asoka. Note that we can squeeze 150 gold out of them in the process!
4)Build Heroic Epic in Umung after the forge.
5)Bulb Philo with the GSci in 7 turns.
6)Switch science rate to 30% and burn off some of our newfound monies.
I imagine I will stop once CS is in so we can decide on trades and civics changes then.
7)Switch the forge at Nomamba to a military build...we can't have every city building forges in times of war! Once I finish off Wang the extra troops here can move on Pataliputra perhaps even razing it!

Thats about it for now...by the end of the day tomorrow Wang will be no more!

Seems like an ok plan of action to me.

I'd suggest whipping a cat or 2 to send to the force thats to raze Pataliputra.

Adios Amigo!

Preturn

I switch Nomamba to an impi to replace the impi I will be stealing from the garrison here.

Sirloin, you are now our medic!

Time for a couple of bribes...its not often that you get paid when you force someone into war :)

3expmaobribe.jpg

I send the HA in Seoul to the hill just to the west and I see a axe and worker but thats it....next turn I will see Pyongs defenses.

(1) 415 AD

Wild Willy dies heroicly to the nearby Horse Archer.
It is a sad day.

In brighter news Asoka sends another HA at a full strength impi on a hill.
We win that one.

Wang Kon converts to Buddhism...yeah you had better start praying.

Speaking of Wang...it appears he is the third most advanced culture out there.
We want your spot buddy!

3expadvanced415.jpg

Well I can't quite yet move to the hill overlooking Pyong as it currently is occupied by a HA, axe and a settler.

3expsettler.jpg

Our forces appear strong enough to move on to Pyong without resting fully first.
The quicker we eliminate Wang the quicker we can move on to Asoka!

(2) 430 AD

Here folks is the garrison of Pyongsang...

A sword and an archer!!! Cower in fear.

In between turns our axe wins in some axe-on-axe combat.
He gets a promo for his efforts.

(3) 445 AD

I foolishly lose a worker near Wonsan.
There was a HA four tiles away and he cruised over and killed him.
A nearby impi disposes of him so the threat is gone.

It also opens up the hill so I send the HA to check it out and he spies two workers.
That will make up for the loss we just incurred.

Our SoD is in range and should attack next turn.

An Asoka HA lands on a hill near Nomamba so I send my impi to take him out before he can pillage anything. He wins but is very low on health so I send an archer to protect him.

(4) 460 AD

Ironfish gets alot of help this turn.
Borders pop.
Workboat finishes.
Chop finishes.
Granary will be completed thanks to the chop next turn. :D

Pyongsang gets shelled down to zero.
They have 3 defenders and we have 2 cats...that is enough to attack in my book.

First cat dies with 19% odds.
Second cat escapes with 39% odds.
We should be clear sailing from here.

95+% odds for all three battles and we win!

3exppyong.jpg

The first of many to fall are the Koreans!
3expkoreadead.png

Good whip opportunity at Umung with 56 overflow.
Same deal at Bulwalyo with 35 overflow and growth next turn.

(5) 475 AD

Sury wants our currency...thought about doing it to avoid conflict, but I don't want to empower him any further.

3expsurybeg475.jpg

Umungs :whipped: goes into the Heroic Epic
Bulwalyos :whipped: goes into a courthouse.

We should be able to slowly but surely finish off Asoka.
I spy Bombays defenses and he has an axe and 2 archers.
One promotion between the three of them.
Pretty easy for us to handle.

(6) 490 AD

Seoul comes out of anarchy and I love it already!
And it hasn't even popped its borders yet.

(7) 505 AD

I should have known the AI wouldn't grab both seafood with that northern city!
I think we can raze this city and replant one north of our HAs position.
Sorry, I missed my screenshot for this one...just gonna have to check the save.

I tweak research to 50% to grab CS a turn sooner.

Our GS has arrived and we wanted a Philo bulb so lets do it!

3expphilo.jpg

I choose Confusion.

3expconfusion.jpg

I think we get a bit of bad luck with the placement of our Holy City.
It lands in Umung...oh well.

(8) 520 AD

Stack is finished resting and is headed towards Bombay.

(9) 535 AD

Civil Service is in and I'm not sure where to head next.
Revolting to Bureau seems obvious to me so I will switch over.

3expcivil.jpg

This will work out nicely because we are one turn away from razing Patali.

(10) 550 AD

Our scouting HA has perished.
It was a 50/50 battle with another HA.
Oh well!

The razing of Patali...

First cat dies with 36% odds.
Second cat dies with 61% odds.
A CRI axe wins with 86% odds.
The next axe wins with 86% odds.
Crazy Carl wins with 99.9% odds.
I save the HA for last so I can retreat back to safety.

We burn it down!

A fast worker is found nearby...I know its probably not likely but I wonder if we capture it will it stay "fast"

The answer...no.
It was worth a try.
I have an impi and a HA guarding him so we should be safe.

Wrapup

There is a Confused mish in Dutch lands right now.
I have him scouting out our neighbors.

The stack is on its way to Bombay now.
I think the best plan of attack is to take out Bombay then Delhi.
We take what we can from Asoka in peace...hopefully a tech!
No one has feudalism yet so no one can vassal him.
We wait ten turns then finish him off.

Lovely! Bye bye Wang. You big Wanger.

I'm inclined to agree with the Asoka proposition of pounding him and then taking peace to get ready for that final hit.

As for our Tech path maybe Machinery and on to Guilds? After that the run up to Lib with the aim of grabbing Steel IMO.
Divine Right is also a good trade option if we can trade for Monarchy and maybe grab Theo off of Asoka for peace. Building Versailles might be an idea for us in this game.

Lets not switch civics till we take peace with Asoka. Change to Bureaucracy and Cast would be my guess. Cast so we can spam some GP in Seoul.

Military plans seem good. I agree with taking two Indian cities, suing for peace and then finishing him off. Looks like we can keep three of the city sites, but the seafood site should be razed and repositioned as someone mentioned.

I see that Asoka has an xbow, which could be a pain but I doubt he has the capacity to produce these in any quantity. Our stack will need a few replacement cats, but once uMung finishes the HE it should be able to do 2-turn cats.

Research-wise, machinery would be nice for maces but so many other civs have it I don't think its worth self-researching. I'd rather trade for it or take it from Asoka as part of the peace settlement. I would just beeline lib and go Paper->Edu->Lib(stop 1 turn out). Once we're at Lib's doorstep we can start teching the "low road" towards Steel(+Gren) (or the high road for Rifles), and tech as far as we can before Lib is in danger of falling.

As far as overall domestic planning goes, I think we're about ready to transition into a peaceful builder phase as we eliminate India and develop our newly acquired cities, shore up our economy, and tech hard towards gunpowder murder. We didn't switch to caste when we got CS, but I think thats fine. Whipping infrastructure will be valuable in our new cities, and we're not quite ready to blast specialists yet anyways. Once Seoul finishes the national epic, we should go caste and run a ton of scientists. Its likely that pacifism will be too expensive, but we should check the numbers when the time comes.

We may want to build some stone wonders in the next turnset or two: Angkor and Sankore (assuming we tech Paper next). Ulundi is finishing a forge, so I'd recommend its build order as Forge -> Market -> Angkor.

Whether we choose Rifles or Grenades, that will be the time to finish Sury and win. Upgrading our CR3s and supplementing them with lots of draftee rifles is pretty much the game-over army.

If we build some of the religious wonders we've got to sink some hammers in to religious buildings first (obviously).

As for Rifles or Gren I'd say its more Rifles or Cannons. I'll take cannons nearly every time.

If we think we could secure Sankore (and we really want it) then Paper will be good trade bait.
