Expansive Dreams

Played up to 800bc.

Proper repor to follow.

We got iron on turn two.

Research up to 50%.

Learned fishing, studying maths.

Got C2, no other cities. Couple more workers..

Got it, will wait for a detailed report and some discussion before playing, but I will plan to play my set Friday evening.

Sounds good pigswill. I'll be away soon so I'll probably miss your detailed report.

After Math I would think its a toss up between Construction (cats to hit Wang) and Currency to help our economy and fund a bit more settler spamming.

I'd suggest currency then construction whilst building swords, axes, etc then spam some cats once construction is in.

On the religion front I'd stay neutral til one of the hindus makes a request that we join them. Or Willem into christianity. NOT Buddist though.

Everything looks on track.
Nice work pigswill! :goodjob:

As far as our future plans go...don't forget that we have the swordsmans quest.
I believe the basic reward is free CRI for all swords and the higher reward (being in Hereditary Rule) is Drill I for all melee units.
For dealing with Wangs Protective Archers I think the CR bonus would be more useful.
Plus we might not get to HR in time.
So we need to pump out eight swords to make that happen.
Sounds easy to do while we tech towards Construction.

Techwise I think Currency then Construction is fine.
With a prompt wipeout of Wang shortly thereafter.

I imagine that we could spam ironfish at some point and make that our worker/settler pump so Umung can focus on churning out those military units.

Other random thoughts...
At some point we should cottage the banana tile in Nomamba...probably after the horse is hooked and the rice is built. It should provide a nice boost to the economy there.

I wouldn't be in any rush to join a religion.
Currently only Umung has any...
I have to figure that the Hindu block will eventually turn on Willem or Asoka.
I say we join the Hindu block (later on) while growing through military expansion to our north and west.

We really could use another happy point in Umung to stagnate at size 7.
Aside from joining Christianity do we have any other options?
Backfilling Priesthood would let us build a temple...but no one has alpha yet.
We could try settling near the jumbos to our north...but that would hurt our economy too much and take too long.

We will be fine at size six but we will need to keep a close eye on our food stores to ensure we don't grow to size 7.

Perhaps we can boost our economy once we get our 8 swords (so wait until we finish the quest) by training them in a rout of Barbarian cities like Bactrian.
We should have some spare time while we tech and build cats.
Plus doing this should allow us to have two or three CRIII swords for our assault on Wang!

sounds good to me. need to get'm down before he gets his UU

i think getting that next round will be best

why cottage that? once calendar is in that'll be +5:food: and a waste of a cottage/town

There's a Christ mission going somewhere through our land, but looks like hindu will be best once we do convert.

why do we not want to grow to size 7? I don't see any benefit from not growing to size 7. Taking Bactrain will be good unless Wang gets a brainer and tries to take it with chariots. We'll be able to hit that sword quest which will be great!

@Cripp:You're probably right...a cottage on the banana isn't necessary...calendar just seemed far away when I thought about it. I wasn't suggesting a permanent cottage but instead a stopgap until we got to calendar. You are right though...there are better uses for our workers right now.

As far as Umung is concerned...its happy cap is at 6 currently.
I was looking for ways to do increase that.
I absolutely want to grow the city...we just can't right now.

@Sirloin: Good luck tonight!

I've had a chance to examine the save; again I apologize for my lack of discussion lately (been really crushed at work - hope to be more constructive in the future). I think we're in good shape, and I agree with the general strategy of militarizing to go after WK as our first target. I have a few notes/questions for the team before I play:

1. Research - Math was just started, has 26 turns remaining (@40% research) so I'll just let that crank.

2. Expansion - "Ironfish" will make a good next city and its very close to the capital so it won't be too expensive but its still going to slow our econ down and its going to be a slow grower (needs a border pop to get its fish). We're quite a ways from currency, and this city spot will never be contested, so my inclination is to NOT settle this during my set.

3. Pyramids. I love the mids and I rarely pass them up. We've got stone and no industrious opponents, so I would like to begin building them. Umung can do them in 21 turns (faster with chops), which is a tradeoff of 5 swords. It will let our cities grow and give us a research boost we really need. Since we're shooting to complete the Elite swords quest, we can go HR -> Rep to get the additional Drill bonus for all melee, depending on how the timing works out. Since I presume we're waiting for construction before attacking WK, we have quite a while before we attack so I think losing 5 swords for the mids in the short term is worth it.

I agree that Ironfish is not needed right away...well I have thoughts about it that I will get to later.
It will grow relatively fast if we hook the iron right away. Well it will build its monument quickly at least.

I am totally on board!
It solves the happiness issues that I was concerned about bigtime!

I don't think we even want to bother with HR...the sword quest wouldn't give us both CR I and Drill I IIRC. I like CR I better anyways.
So if we get it then I say we jump right to Rep.
We have some options to run a decent early SE.

Heres how I see it.

Umung can stagnate at size 9 with:
Gems/Copper/Iron/Corn
2 grass mines, 2 forests and a plains mine for 24 hammers!

Ulundi can stagnate at size 10 with:
2 corn
4 riverside cottages
2 plains mines
2 Scientist specs

Thinking down the road...Ironfish can easily run 2 science specs by working the fish tiles.
And they will have plenty leftover to work mines for hammers or watertiles later with Moai.

I think you should at least get the settler for Ironfish started during your set to get its borders popping sooner rather than later!

Set completed - played 18 turns.

Turn 128 - Inherited. Reviewed our cities and empire management and all of pigwill's choices look good, made no changes. I begin building the Pyramids in uMung. My goal will be to work on the infrastructure+growth of our three small cities. We have a good number of workers, so plenty of chopping/improvements will get them on track.

129 (775BC) - Asoka demands we cancel deals with Khmer.
Spoiler :
civ_ed_3_diplo1.JPG

Asoka is on the bottom of the board and part of the hindu block with which we'll eventually be at war, so I refuse. He stays at cautious

132 (700BC) - Surya goes WHEOOH. He doesn't like WK and Asoka and he's far away from us so I'm sure we have nothing to worry about. Trade Corn for Pig with him.

133 (675BC) - Caesar builds GLighthouse

134 (650BC) - Asoka founds a new city. It's one tile off the coast, with no food resources: great job dude.
Spoiler :
civ_ed_3_wknewcity.JPG

135 (625BC) - Mao (now Christian) demands we cancel with WK
Spoiler :
civ_ed_3_diplo2.JPG

The Christian block is growing, and the only religion we have in our cities is Christian, so I agree and cancel with WK.

Ulundi has grown to size 7 and is happy capped so I stagnate growth and run two scientists.
Spoiler :
civ_ed_3_capital.JPG

137 (575BC) - WK converts to Christianity
139 (525BC) - Horses are hooked up, but I don't build any chariots. All military production is for swords. Now that we've scouted the whole continent, our scouts have a report from China:
Spoiler :
civ_ed_3_scouting.JPG

140 (500BC) - JC converts to Christianity - this is becoming the dominant religion
141 (485BC) - Asoka builds his Budda shrine
143 (455BC) - Math is in, set to Currency.
Willem demands we convert to Christianity
Spoiler :
civ_ed_3_diplo3.JPG

The power of Christ compels me; I agree. The whole world is part of this block now except Suya and Asoka

145 (425BC) - Willem founds Islam. We complete...
Spoiler :
civ_ed_3_pyramids.JPG

... the pyramids. Convert to Rep.

146 (410BC) - Anarchy is over so I retire and leave it to the next player

Notes:
Expansion. Expansion wasn't anything more than a dream during my set. I didn't want to crash our econ until we get currency or get some commerce cities established. There is a barbarian city (Bactrain) to the NE thats on a nice site and easily capturable with the force we have nearby (3 Archers defending, SwordsCR1 at 88%, AxesCR1 at 66% both). Ironfish is a nice choice as well; I did not build a settler yet. We could also capture the western barb city, Harappin, (on a hill though) to block off our section of the map and leave us with tons of land to backfill. The C2* site to WK's east is still available as well for a settler.
Eastern Barb City:
Spoiler :
civ_ed_3_barb.JPG

Military. Built a couple swords; not many since Umung was building the Mids for my whole set. Now that they are done, the next player can finish the swordsman quest. Our neighbors have weak militaries and aren't expanding too well.

Research. Tech is decent but we're a little behind. With Rep now, we should start steaming ahead. The one mistake I'm annoyed at is that I got Maths 3 turns before the end of my set and I decided to just let the next player shop it around for trade. Unfortunately on my last turn, someone else discovered it and shared it with most everyone. Sorry about that.

Overall we're in good shape. We have great land; our neighbors are weak and ripe for the conquering; and we're on good terms with distant nations. Our cities are very happy due to Rep and ready to grow big. The next player can get our military ready in advance of cats, Tech currency -> construction, and prepare for war.

(Steam updated me to 3.19 automatically so hopefully that doesn't screw the save up for anyone. BUG worked fine for me without any updates, so I encourage anyone that's hesitating to upgrade to just do it)
The Save:

Attachments

Uh oh...I can't load the save.

I think this could be trouble...I wanna say that pigswill and cripp are playing in SGOTM and must stay at 3.17 until that finishes.
My two other SGs have players in it as well that have requested us to not upgrade just yet.

Everyone should chime in with their thoughts...I don't think I can update at this moment however.

Sirloin, I should have mentioned it earlier but based on the report alone it looked like a really well played set.

Apparently patch 3.19 involves alot of spreading Christianity...Willem got alot of converts during your turns. :D

Yeah unfortunately the Steam version of BTS automatically patches the game (generally a nice feature) so I'm pretty much stuck at 3.19. Even if I were to reinstall I don't think there is a way to selectively choose how far to patch, and I don't think the manual patches are compatible. If I had a choice, I would have held off to see if people needed to stay at 3.17.

Anyways, there are a few options:
1. Everyone can agree to patch up. I realize if people are bound by other SGs they may not be able to do this (see #2), but its a new patch so I'm sure this isn't the only game where people are considering a patch so its worth finding out if others are willing to switch. As I mentioned, BUG works fine for me, and the only mod problems I've heard are total conversions like Rhye's, so it doesn't seem like patching will affect most people's games.

2. Install a 2nd version of BTS alongside your old one and patch up. This is the most flexible but can certainly be a pain in the ass. People may not have CDs / keys / etc.

3. I can just drop out / lurk. Stuff happens; not a huge deal, but since I'm the one who was autopatched and have no way of rolling back a version, its on me.

This is a problem! Don't want to lose any of you guys from the team. I personally don't mind patching up but that means lossing at least 2/3 players.

Is there not a roll back function on the steam version?

Unless everyone wants to patch up then you might need to step aside Sirloin. Which sucks.

It also means that we can't run your save ATM which is a shame as it looks like you did a pretty nice job on your set.

Good we got the mids! Looks like option #2 for me. My sgotm is a HOF 3.17.003 mod so updating my {current} version is a no go. That's why I hate when new patches come out in the middle of on-line games.

Oh well, having a 3.19 version to play/compare isn't too big a deal for me. Just have to keep those saves seperated

@Sirloin or Cripp (sounds like you will be doing what I am trying to do):

How exactly would you install a second version of BTS that would allow me to keep a version where I can play 3.17 as well. I would like to upgrade to 3.19 so having the flexibility to run both for a while would be great.

If it is possible I'm sure that I can figure it out by fiddling around a bit...but I thought I would save some time by asking you guys first.
