It would be really easy (for the developers) to fix the lump sum for GPT exploit though. Just disable trading anything fixed for anything turn based. You can still trade ressources for GPT, and you can still trade open borders for fixed gold. But no crossovers anymore - problem solved.
Myself I like to play the game in an intuitive way, without having to rely on exploits. I've always known that there are players who will do anything they can get away with to rank high in the list, and I know it can't really be prevented.
What I enjoy in GOTM is that I can play interesting scenarios that have been given some thought by a human and are not just coming out of a random number generator. And then I can post about my results and read how other people did it on the forums.
If I can get a decent rank on the results list that's great, but as with any online high-score list there's always some people who have this impossible-seeming score, that makes you think "Yeah right"
