I was wondering what exploits are popular in multiplayer games. I was told someone in our games going on was using some population exploit so that he keeps most of his food. By the middle of his game he had something close to 30 population cities and was FAR ahead in tech, later we found out he was using such an exploit.

What sucks is that this is a friendly game between friends. Hours wasted because we all lost on turn 1 :/. I don't know why he did it personally. It's like playing Kingmaker and knowing all the rules, but not letting people know some of the things you can do so you are just beating them down and shoving their face into the dirt. Doesn't make for a fun game.

Is there any other exploits people use that we can know about?

If this is the way people play this then i'm going back to SC2, lol.

Are there any house rules people make for these games?

I have been playing Civ5 for nearly 2 years, I have never herd of such an exploit.
Maybe he played as aztecs with free tradition aqueducts and build Hanging Gardens? :)

There is some kind of exploit in MP games played on prince or below difficulty levels. If your civ is the first in military, you can bully surrounding CSs fairly easy and receive from them large lumps of gold. Playing as Austria, this gold can be used for very rapid expansion by getting married to other CSs.

Well my other friend is going to talk to him and find out what he did because he did it without any tech at all.

Something like this happened to me once. Turns out he was playing on settler...

If he was Aztecs, went tradition, and took all of the growth bonuses from religion, plus had maritime allies, I can see that without cheating.

I have a hard time believing this is an exploit if it takes until "the middle" of the game. Probably just a strong focus on growth, taking Tradition for fast free aquaducts, possibly some good wonders like Temple of Artemis and Hanging Gardens, possibly combined with a civ that has bonuses to growth such as the Aztecs, Inca, Dutch, etc.

Slap 30+ surplus food on any city and it won't take THAT long to get size 30.

Or Siam with a bunch of maritime city states allied. Played a No Quitters game recently where someone playing as Siam got a bunch of those allied, and in addition to the cities' own very good food production, quickly had a size 30 cap and three size 15-20 orbiting cities.
