Exploring helicopter

it is also very possible that helicopters have a movement class all there own...move like ground units...cross water....engage other helos but not air, air could engage them..engage ground units...but certain ground units cant engage back...that would make complete sense and also have a good balance..

And not get movement bonus by roads. (Maybe railroads to represent them being transported)

Ah, last I heard no ground unit can seamlessly cross large bodies of water (like a lake, river, small sea, etc) and back onto land almost instantly like those ground units you mention. Even infantry, unles they have boas waiting, can't do that. Hence helicopters being -air- units.

Hovercraft. Amphibious tanks (yes they exist).

Wonder if air units will work more like SMAC - though they were hideously overpowered there...

Oooh hot looking babe walking outside my house...

That's what I want helos to have:
*normal movement over level terrain (plains, desert, forest, jungle, marsh, sea, ocean, etc)
*decreased movement over hills, plateaus, etc
*banned movement over mountains
*no road/railroad benefits

The helo is more of a hybrid unit in its interactions between air units and ground units. It is highly ability to react to ground forces and vulunerable to it, while having the mobility of air units. Therefore, helos should NOT be modeled as air or ground units, but rather a new class "Near Ground Air".

Yes they exist but these do not operate to well. Hovercraft to can not travel over terrain other that flat grassland or beeches and amphib tanks do not perform well in either terrain. They can but they are not ideal for it.

Needless to say, these are exceptions, not the general rule of military units.

why can't ground units engage a helicopter? They got blown outta of the sky in vietnam by small arms fire- and those super duper sophisticated BlackHawks got knocked out by 20 year old rpg's. Helicopters are vulnerable as hell.

What's that patch of grass under the helicopter? Is it part of the unit's graphics? (I hope not)

some ground units should be able to. some should not. I have a very hard time imagening a phalanx of greece spearmens taking on an Apache. But it's not a problem for an AA-unit or as you say (atleast with little bit older helis as Black Hawks) being shot down by an RPG.

I like this model very much! Helis are cool and should be useful!
