Expression of Nationalism in the Forums

Ooh la la Wales!

Anyways, I'm rarely nationalistic about my country, and I happily interchange between Scotland and Britain as my country of choice. This is, of course, dependant on any sports events that may be happening.

Frankly I'm amazed that there are som many Nationalists on CFC from poxy nations. There should be a rule that you aren't allowed to be Nationalistic unless you've subjecated at least 3 other nations.

A nationalist according to me is a person blinded by his admiration for his own country, and there for not able to clearly perceive the rest of the world.

Nationalism is IMO more often an obstacle than the opposite for many people to cooperate with other people and seeing them as having an equal right to exist.

Nationalism is based on the same feelings and mechanisms in the human animal as racism, and is equally bad.

But one should not equal Nationalism with Patriotism, unfortunately a lot of people call them selfs patriots when they actually are nationalists.

My definition of patriotism is finding your home land good, and as good as any other country.
Whilst Nationalism is all about believing that your nation is better than all other countries, which is a very unhealthy attitude because of the importance of cooperating with other nations for the sake of your own nation.

For example a lot of Americans call themselves patriots, but think of the USA as the best country in the world. This makes them nationalists IMO, and is quite sad and sickening to watch.

It's no problem, you just move to Toronto and you'll fit right in.

Getting bold now that the senators are making a run I see.

A man from Northern Ireland with a hockey display pic? Please do elaborate.

I had a friend who came to Queen's for exchange and fell in love with hockey. He now plays back home in Australia.

I believe in nationalism to a certain extent. I think it's understandable that everyone on the forums speaks from his/her own point of view. It's the native country that people obviously know the most about. I believe that it's healthy to love the people in one's own surroundings and to love the land itself. What I don't like is when people are blinded by their patriotism. It's vital to understand that you might not be able to think from the point of view of some foreign nationals. I can respect a constructive discussion which is based on facts. But a battle between different nationals on the forums is futile.
Many notions are generally mixed up. There's nationalism, there's patriotism, there's chauvinism. These notions are different.

What I agree on is that we don't have necessarily the same point of view on the world according to our country of birth. This isn't necessarily a matter of nationalism, it's more a matter of education and culture. We all have a bias because of this, no matter if we want it or not. However, this becomes an issue when we reject the idea that things can be seen differently. It's at that point that we really reach nationalism.

I just remember a recent discussion with someone who told me that the new French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, wasn't ethnically French. I answered him that there's no such a thing as being "ethnically French" and he considered that as some kind of chauvinism. The truth is that French people have never been raised with the idea that France was an ethnicity, and this for the simple reason that France is such a mess at the level of cultural roots that it necessarily turns out utterly pointless to determine who would be ethnically French and who would not. Anyway, he thought I was bs-ing him but that's not the point. The only thing I mean is that the country we've been raised in necessarily generates a bias on the perception of some things.

:goodjob:

Spoiler :

What are poxy nations? What means "to subjecate"? :p
I'm not sure it's a real word but here's a definition:
Poxy
Adj.
1. Rubbishy, crass, of poor quality.
2. A general negative intensifier. E.g."I'm not wasting my time and money by going to the poxy shops, just to keep her happy."
* Occasionally spelt poxey.

I'm still somewhat of a nationalist, although the feeling is dieing my generation seem to be commies and hold no love for this country. They also have some fetish over Europe.
