Extra-hard History quiz!

You need to get the word out on this quiz. It's pretty awesome and has great potential. With the involvement of the greater internet community, it could become a wonder of the world.

Do you know of any other forums that would be interested in something like this? I have posted it on several but they have not produced much content. Perhaps another history forum? Do you know of any?

I fully agree - the technical work is 95% done now, and with enough contributors it would indeed be one hell of a quiz :D Right now though it needs more general, easier questions though.
Unfortunately, I already posted on it on the only two forums I frequent where I believe I can get much support. I also placed a link to it on my freeware site, but that does not bring much traffic. As for search engines, I asked for inclusion in dmoz.org (the database behind Yahoo & Altavista), but it's not done yet. Google will find it eventually, but that is still a few weeks off at best.
Hmm, I'm going to try the Europa Universalis forums. It's a game for history buffs (even more than CivIII), it might raise some interest. If you are regular poster on the-other-civ-forum-that-should-not-be-named-here ;) , can you post a link there? If not, I will.

Thanks again for your support in any case. Your fifty questions are a full sixth of the database, after all ;)

Alright. I'm not a regular poster on that other forum, but I'm sure somebody that is can be found.

I'll get to work on those easy general questions.

Thanks. As soon as I have 20 "pure history" questions of each difficulty I will also make the "background history" category appear only in the "world today" Quiz. That will ensure that a question can only appear in one and only one quiz (the 1-5 difficulty settings now correspond directly to the five level of difficulties).
I posted on the EU forums, it brought 300 quizzes taken in a night, but no questions for the moment.

Just checked, that means I need 5 lvl 1 and 5 lvl 2 new "pure history" questions. I'll try to think of a few more today.

edit: done. The "background history" questions no longer appear in the history quiz. I added just enough questions to get the minimum 20 needed for every difficulty level.
I also added several new categories for historical questions, dividing it by timeline. I will move the questions currently in "pure history" to those new cats later (hint: it's going to be boring ;) )

I did it myself. However, apolyton only brought a handful of visitors, and no questions. We now have empiric proof that CFC is populated by more intelligent, educated and thoughtful posters ;)
The Europa Universalis forums yielded close to a thousand quizzes taken, but only *one* of the posters there submitted questions. What can we do to get people to submit more of them??

On a related note, I just confirmed your latest. Your status as #2 contributor is getting more and more affirmed ;)

My wish-list for the quiz:

-- Multimedia questions. (i.e., see a picture or hear an MP3/WAV file, answer who is this, whose national anthem is this, etc.)

-- matching questions. Something like "match all of these dictators with the countries that they ruled", where next to each option you could chose from a drop-down menu or something.

Is any of that possible to implement? I'm not familiar with the whole programming thing.

Sound files are out: WAV files are too big, and not every browers can read MP3s embedded in a webpage.
Pictures are an interesting possibilities though... It would require a fair amount of work on my side but I think it would be worth it. I will definitely consider it.

Matching questions would definitely be possible, but it would require quite a lot of programming to do it correctly, and I do not believe it would be as interesting an addition as pictures. I might add something like that latter, but it is rather far down the priority list.

My own wish list would be more visitors and more questions submitted... though I can hardly fault you on that last one ;)

If you can think of other forums where to post it, please do!

Gave a try on the hardest level; got 9 outta 20 correct. :hmm:

But then, had seen 1 question before, and another 2 were put up by me... :crazyeye:

Only two of them were yours XIII? I think the morality is clear: you need to submit more :mischief:

SeleucusNicator, you will find the submission form upgraded to allow picture submission  It's a bit bar-bone for the moment though: very little error checking and you need to upload a picture from your computer. I will add the possibility to enter a link instead later. In the meantime, you can just find the pict you want on the web, save it to the desktop and upload it.
You can submit GIF, JPEG and PNG, though they will all be converted to jpeg. If the picture is bigger than 600*200, it will be resized.

It is only possible to put a picture per question - I thought of allowing a picture per answer, but it would make the pages too heavy.
The picture will appear between the question and the different possibilities.

Now that I have bothered to program that, all of you get busy submitting questions using it! :p

I can't see images in image questions. Is anyone else having this problem?

If you mean in the questions list, it is normal: I have not yet added them.

However, they do appear in the test.

UPDATE: I worked on the system some more, and I have added the possibility of putting a link instead of upload a file, less compression when the original pict is a gif or png (to limit the quality loss of the conversion to jpeg), and a link to the picture in the "questions list" pages.
I also reworked the place where pictures are put on a page to make it look better.
No error checking yet though.
