face/poly count for a unit model

I remember reading this somewhere but I can't seem to find the thread. What is the average/max poly/face count for weapons, units, and vehicles?

I ask this because I'm working on a unit and its current poly count is 844 and I was wonder if this was too much for a unit.
 
afaik 500-2k veritices are used. however you should be aware that graphics cards came along way since cIV, i.e. even the most outdated ones today could probably easily render meshes with 3k veritices.
 
So vertices are the only bit that will affect game performance? Or is it a mixture of both faces and vertices? I assumed it was faces but I honestly don't really know.
 
vertices are just a different measurment of faces/polygons. vertices are the points, faces the surfaces connecting the points.
