In a recent game, I created MPP's with a number of other civs. (Huge pangea, 16 civs) I did this with the intention of starting a war against a couple of other civs, and letting someone else do the fighting for me. Making peace as soon as possible. After all the wars had started, I cancelled all my MPP's so that I didn't have to go to war again, but everone else carried on therefore giving me a chance to expand my empire cultrally and scientifically.
A few goes later I got the message China has attacked our friends Japan we must help them, followed by England (Thats me) declares war on china. I double checked my alliance with Japan and no MPP existed. Why did this happen.

Most likely you missed that one when you were going through and cancelling your MPP's. Open up the foreign advisor screen (F4) and make sure the check box next to "Show Mutual Protection Pacts" is checked. If you can't already see China and Japan you'll need to bring those icons up. To do this, hold down "shift" and right click on one of the leader icons. A list of all of the icons you can't see will appear. Just pick the ones you want.

How were you getting rid of the deals? Remember that the only way to stop a treaty (trade, MPP or ROP) before 20 turns is to declare war.

I checked the foreign advisor screen, there were no MPP's.
All of my MPP's were more than 20 turns old, so I went to the active trades window and cancelled the MPP's.
