I loved the Fallout games so much; I can't tell you what breathless anticipation with which I await the third iteration. If they take as long to make Fallout 3 as they did to make Oblivion, I won't expect to see Fallout 3 before 2008 (oh, the agony of waiting!).
Of course, the Fallout fan community is notorious for being fanatical even by gamer standards, and chances are that no matter what Bethesda does, large chunks of the fan community won't be happy.
I'm really trying not to be as exacting as the others, but... well... you know.
Bethesda is the grand champion of "sandbox" style open-ended gaming (Fallout could be considered a "proto-sandbox" game). I have every expectation that Bethesda will get this part right, although I hope they manage to capture some of the flavor of Fallout. Will I still be able to marry any gender of my choosing, pimp my spouse out, then kill them and stuff their brains into a robot body? (How's that for open-ended?)
What I'm worried about is all the other stuff, especially combat. I love the turn-based tactical combat of Fallout, and I'm worried that party combat in Fallout 3 will be some real-time RTS console-ish kind of thing. As the article says, if I can't kick a rat in the nuts, it's not Fallout.
Then there is the matter of heart, soul, and attitude, that unquantifiable something that made the Fallout games truly outstanding.
Oh, and let's not forget art direction. Fallout and Fallout 2 are quite possibly the only games in which I ever actually noticed art direction, which says a lot right there.
Like the article writer, I want it dark and violent, but if the game doesn't also make me laugh fairly regularly, I'll feel that I've been robbed. I fully expect to encounter NPCs that are bizarre and insane and participate in a few conversations that border on surreal.
Anyway, is anyone else anticipating this as much as I? What are your hopes and fears regarding this game?
PS -- Fallout should have become an RPG franchise on par with Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls, Might and Magic, etc. We wuz robbed!
