Just some quick news. Fallout 1 is now available on www.gog.com for free until april, 8. Be sure to grab your copy. If you are a newcomer who never experienced any classic Fallout games - now you don't have any excuses not to try:goodjob:

But I already own it :( Also surprisingly enough Ubisoft has AssCreed 1 and Heroes V on there, although they are $19.99 each so it seems they still don't grasp the idea of GoG or how much those games are actually worth today :p EDIT: Wait, AC1 never had strong DRM in the first place on Steam it only uses Steam for DRM.

Also CD Projekt/GoG held a conference today and here are a couple of things from it:
Everyone who owns The Witcher 2 (regardless of where you bought it from) can get a free copy of The Wither 1: Enhanced Edition on GoG as of April 17th http://www.gog.com/en/page/witcherbackup

The Witcher 1 EE is coming out for Mac, so everyone who owns TW1EE on Steam gets that for free.

Improved GOG.com downloader (still optional to use, but it is much better).

And some stuff about The Witcher 2 Enahnced Edition, Xbox 360 version and review copies.

Like Master of Orion 2 from GOG, Baldurs Gate Complete, PlanescapeTorment, Master of Magic, Septerra Core and Age of Wonders Shadow Magic sofar so good GOG

and Disciples 2 Gold

None of the people that worked in the game is getting paid for the game anymore, particularly for single copies of the game that were sold for 10 dollars after the success of Fallout 3.

Of which, I notice that Steam is actively still selling... don't they have any shame?

I think they should at least get paid for it a bit, considering that a lot of people worked in the original Fallout. And for 6-10 dollars you can today get any sort of indy game and support the people that are working on it to some degree. Purchasing Fallout 1, 2 or Brotherhood of Steel, you are likely supporting none of the creative staff.

But that's just me.

CDProjectRed kind of gets paid indirectly though. And they're a far better studio than Black Isle ever was. Basically Black Isle was like the [something overrated] of the video game industry. Good thing they died so they could no longer ruin their own franchises with poor sequels (Fallout 2).

Considering that, with the exception of a couple of studios like CD Projekt RED, most developers who make RPGs still have difficulty matching the quality of Black Isle's RPGs today. Of course as Bethesda and Bioware have shown in recent years you don't need to give your games real depth for them to sell ridiculously well so they aren't even really trying too ಠ_ಠ

And I'd hardly call Fallout 2 a screw up.

Well Bethesda games are quite a bit higher in terms of quality - the only problem is that they're aiming for an entirely different crowd. Agreed on Bioware though.

The writing is plain terrible. Most of the game is just you running through a string of towns doing random quests. Consider that the antagonists only appear 3/4s of the way through the game and that the writers couldn't come up with a more creative way of exposition than to drop a massive lore dump on you in the final level (before that you don't have a clue as to what their motivation is). The main plot is just so ridiculously hamfisted... even the lore dump is handled without any sort of grace or subtlety - just some computer entries and talking heads reciting their master plan word by word...

And lets not forget the cheese! Very incomplete list of cheese:
-Ghost
-People who pretend to be ghosts
-psychic shaman visions
-all of San Francisco
-Aliens! (this is just as bad as the vampires in Fallout 3)
blahblah blah the list goes on forever.

The combat encounters are poorly designed. There's like 20 aliens and "floaters" in the bottom of the oil tanker for no reason. Breaks the atmosphere to have crap like that carelessly littered around.

Even the loot system is poor. You get rich super early and your armour tier jumps from None -> improved metal armour -> improved Enclave power armour. Nothing inbetween... Fallout 1 otth was very good at guiding you through the tiers one by one.

The game is just plain bad. And it ruined the franchise LONG before Fallout 3 ever came along. Los Vegas at least redeems the series a little bit...

I'd hardly call their last few high quality. Sure they were fun, and I actually really enjoy Fallout 3, but they all have serious flaws and shortcomings. They squander so much potential and while they are as wide as an ocean they are as deep as a pond (Fallout 3 being a bit deeper since your actions do feel like they have some affect thanks to Three Dog).

By all means be as vague as you possibly can.

I'm not sure about Wanamingos. Okay, I'll look it up.

Good thing for fallout wiki. I didn't know they had a weakness to legs. I used to hate trying to kill those things. I mostly went for eye shots. They are tough to kill, because you don't have a lot of firepower at that stage of the game.

Anyways, Fallout 2 rules, and I've played it 2 or 3 times as much as Fallout 1. It wasn't until Fallout 3 that I felt the series took a turn for the worse. Although New Vegas brought it back. Tactics was bad from a story prospective, but I actually enjoyed the gameplay. The problem with Tactics and Fallout 3, is I feel the Brotherhood of Steel takes on too large a role of being the "good guy".

Too bad I missed this sale. I would have picked it up. I prefer a digital version so I don't need to fumble around looking for the disc to play the game. edit: although iirc you could do full installs with Fallout 1 and 2 and not require the disc.
