Fallout: New Vegas

Is this a new game altogether?

I loved Fallout 3 until I hit the level 20 cap. I was shocked and lost all interest in the game. Part of the fun of the game for me was getting new abilities and leveling up while exploring the "sandbox." (Isn't that part of the fun in all of these games?) I even bought the DLC that extended it to 30 so I could keep going, but I stopped playing shortly thereafter.

Is there a cap here too?
No, that cap was removed in Fallout 3 with the Broken Steel (if I remember the name correctly) DLC.

Does the PC version still have the same stupid , cumbersome console-interface Obliovion and Fallout 3 had ?
It wouldn't be a deal-breaker, but I find it very irritating when a game's UI is wasting my time.
One of the first mods I got for Oblivion was to fix the GUI :p The interface is the same as in FO3, mostly. However there are of course mods for that too.

Broken Steel upped the cap to 30 (and allowed you to keep playing if you finished the main quest line... which was another flaw in the original if you ask me, I mean this is a sandbox game). I just read a review and apparently the cap is 30 for New Vegas... disappointing but I will probably buy this game as I did love Fallout 3.

I'll probably won't get the game as I found Fallout 3 too hard even on the easiest difficulty.

It's not too bad if you use VATS. That's the closest approximation to gameplay in Fallout 2 btw.

One thing I like in this game over fallout 3 is the humor. Bethesda isn't exactly known for their humor in their games. Fallout 3 did have some dark humor in it, however. It wasn't entirely serious. I like the 50's recreation in the Vault where you find your father.

It's kind of funny when you get to New Vegas and you see who's playing in the fountain in front of a casino. I like humorous touches like that.

I do miss the Assault Rifle and the Chinese Assault Rifle.

Though I have gotten my hands on some Blackwolf's backpacks and a reinforced chinese stealth armor.

Though encountering the Nightkins did gave me a jump when they POP up unadnounced. Makes me want to grab a flamer and spycheck wherever Nightkins are located! Same for the Spore carriers in Vault 22. Spychecking every single vegetation in Vault 22.

what is spycheck?

Its from Team Fortress 2, you spycheck team mates by shooting/hitting them (there is no FF) to make sure they aren't a spy in disguise. The most anti-spy class is pyro, who uses a flamethrower, and spies are highly flammable.

Never played Fallout 3 but you should check out Vault 11. That's one messed up place.

EDIT: It's northeast from Helios One.

Vault 11 just reminds me of the atmosphere of the Bush Administration :crazyeye:

Anything deathly creepy like the Dunwich Building(Fallout 3) in Fallout: Vegas?

If you're not on your toes, Vault 22 is quite creapy with spore carriers "sleeping" in the vegitation then sneaking up behind you and attacking you.

Another to add, thoes gigantic bees (Cazador) had just been upgraded to demonic spiders to me. They just headbutt and sting you!! :run:

Somehow, I managed to snatch the Bumper Sword from Davison. This time, with the Armored Chinese Stealth Suit, I snuck in and performed my own pop in against the Nightkin mutants, then slashed them TF2 scout style with the mechette.

I don't do melee so I ditched the bumper sword.

I haven't been to Vault 11 yet, looking forward to that then. I missed Dunwich Building in Fallout 3 it seems, I may have to go back to that game one of these days. I got kind of bored of that one and skipped through the main quest till the end. And I got sooooo tired of metro tunnels. That's why I love FNV so much better. No metro tunnels :). And the many factions are pretty cool as well.

Fallout 22 is pretty cool, not very creepy but cool. It got annoying as I couldn't find what I was looking for (the quest arrows leave much to be desired sometimes). I kept going to every level trying to find a way into that locked room (my lockpick wasn't high enough). And then trying to figure out how to ignite the gas (see my spoiler tag above if you need to know how to do that).

I just got done killing a few deathclaws. Although I still haven't touched the quest in sloan. I'm not ready for the alpha male. I used almost all my microfusion cells trying to get to Melissa the back way. And it took me like an hour to find a back way into quarry junction. I killed many radscorpions too. :). Even the backway you'll have to kill a few deathclaws. They aren't too bad if you take them on one at a time and you use your follower to tank for you.

posting in the civ5 boards made me realize what makes a game fun (and why civ5 isn't fun). Challenge and tension. Although rpg's have other things too (like a good story etc.) And reminds me of one gripe I have about Fallout New Vegas (over fallout 3).

Why do your henchmen/companions not die? It's kind of cheesy they go unconscious. See my post about deathclaws above. I wouldn't have been able to do that if my henchmen died. As he gets torn apart pretty fast from deathclaws. Using him as a tank, I can take on deathclaws even though I'm probably too low a level for them. I think I'm level 14 right now btw. As long as I can kill that deathclaw before it gets to me, I'm okay. (which means I can't take on more than one).

But I feel this makes the game too easy. They should have it so your companions can die like in Fallout 3. Other than that FNV is much much better than Fallout 3. I can't put my finger on it exactly. It just seems more fun. I have more fun doing sidequests than I did in fallout 3. There seems to be a lot more to do in this world than in fallout 3. So despite my gripe about companions, this actually is a far superior game than fallout 3.

This game is definitely better than Fallout 3. Faction system is great. Playing it on hardcore and enjoying.

Are spoilers allowed here BTW?

Anyway consider yourself warned...

Spoiler :
Just spent half a day trying to figure "We are legion" quest where "Dead Sea" asks you to kill all officers in camp "Forlorn Hope" or something . In particular how to do it with my rather weak character (2 str and 2 end) quietly without getting all the NCR on my ass. Decided to try it after I get "mister sandman" perk. So killed 3 of them while they slept unnoticed without rep hit, but had trouble with the one inside main tent, she never slept and had 2 troopers around her at all times. Well I found the solution... dropped C4 under her chair > detonate > BOOM > done... No rep hit, no nothing... No one noticed the BOOM!:crazyeye::lol::crazyeye::lol:

Play Hardcore mode... They WILL die. If you didn't try it, you should definitely try it. IMO "hardcore mode" is how this game should be played. And the game won't be too easy... and MUCH more interesting. Your problem solved :) ... unless you dislike hardcore for some reason? :(

Well, just picked this up.

Just out of curiosity, whats your fav character make up? Stat placement? Go hand to hand ninja? Sniper? Big guns?

How are you approaching the game?

My favorite character make up is... 2 str, 8 per, 2 end, 6 cha, 6 int, 10 agl, 7 luck. 10 agility via "small frame" trait. For skills: guns, lockpick and sneak. With "black widow" and "mister sandman" as the priority non-combat perks that goes perfectly with my character. The play style is obvious from that set up, I try to eliminate threats unnoticed and from a distance, as close combats can be lethal for my character. But if I absolutely have to (ambushed etc.), then a handgun, "gunslinger" and "finesse" come to play. Plus some quiet murdering via "mister sandman", when need arises to assassinate some non-hostile NPC. Also stealing everything I find relatively valuable. :)

I like to play as a sniper. Currently running around with 4 different rifles and littering the Nevada desert with hundreds of headless corpses.

yeah that's what I was thinking. It seems interesting playing the game having to eat, drink, and sleep. I should have played my first game in hardcore. As I just got done playing fallout 3 so I'm fairly familiar with the combat. Unlike when I first started playing fallout3, it took a while to get a hang of the combat. So I think I'm familiar enough with the game mechanics to go to hardcore.

I think you can switch to hardcore in the middle of the game? But you don't get the achievement. I will most likely play through one more time anyways and do hardcore the entire game.

I never tried hand to hand ninja. In a game like fallout tactics I might specialize a character in that. But in this game you only get one guy. And you have to survive encounters with deathclaws. So keep that in mind. Although you can most likely skip the deathclaw area as in fallout 3 (I never did kill any deathclaws in fallout 3). Just keep in mind those guys will tear you up if you don't have great armor- even still. I still want to try a character like that one of these days for something different. All too often I either go energy weapons or regular guns (big guns aren't a separate skill in this game I believe). I think I'm around 4 str, 5 perception, 5 endurance, 1 charisma, 9 intelligence, 9(10 with small frame) agility, and 8 luck. luck helps with criticals and winning at blackjack in Las Vegas (I'm so rich now)

Does anyone know if perception increases energy weapons like in fallout 3? I'm still unclear on that. Perception doesn't seem as mandatory as in Fallout 1 and 2, so I kept it around 5. And I don't know how the above poster goes around with 2 strength. What weapon do you use? How do you carry all your stuff?
