Fate of GOTM when Civ III is here?

What will happen to the GOTM when Civ III is released? Will the Civ II GOTM disappear in favor of a Civ III GOTM or will there be tandem GOTMs?

I read up on Civ III last night and now eagerly look forward to buying it as soon as I can. I don't foresee being able (timewise) to play two GOTMs per month. I would like to see a Civ III GOTM ASAP. I like the Civ II GOTMs but have little hope of a good showing against the expert civvers out there. A Nov. Civ III GOTM would be interesting in that we'd all be newbies at the game.

I imagine we'll see something. Not straight I suspect.Gotta give people a chance to buy and learn how to play abit.
After that, will depend on if it is good or not.

I'll have to discuss it with Thunderfall, but I think that the GOTM for Civ3 will start next year. So GOTM I for Civ3 is for january 2002. Also because I might have to think of some other way of calculating the score. I hope and think (reading about the way of scoring at civ3.com) that I won't have to think about my own way of scoring! But I'll have to check that out. In any case I'll buy Civ3 as soon as possible (which is in november, since I live in the netherlands).

But then we'll have two GOTM's: both for Civ2 and Civ3. But if the interest in the GOTM or Civ2 is too small (e.g. only 10 submissions per month) it'll cease to exist. But my guess is that the GOTM for Civ2 will stay alive for some time...

Well I think that we should keep the Civ2 GotM - for a few more months - even though I'm prettys ure that most people will prefer to play Civ3 - we might keep it until February so that the first GotM will have run for one year and by then the Civ3 GotM should be on it's way.

But I don't think that having GotM's in both Civ2 and Civ3 would be a good idea - not only because of the increased work load but also beacuse then you will probably only see members playing one game and then we might have two GotM's that never get more than 20 participants.

It will take a little time for the Civ III transition, getting thru bugs, patches, new scoring system, etc.

Civ II probably won't just dry up and blow away, since it is still a good game and the computer requirements are easy to meet, esp. for those that travel & use notebook/laptops.

Personally, I'll still play both Civ II and Civ III, though how much of each will still "depend". Civ II is proven (even with its "faults"), but Civ III is not (yet).

And if time gets in a bind some month, I'll just play a quick Civ II OCC GOTM, or some such variant! It will be interesting to see what variants are possible (or useful) in Civ III after we all start to get settled in with it (assuming Civ III is the worthy successor it seems to be).
I think a dual Civ II & Civ III GOTM next year is a good idea, and if the Civ II interest drops down to 10 or so like Matrix pointed out, then the Civ II GOTM can of course be retired.

In my opinion we should keep GOTM for CIV II for several months after the release of CIVIII.

I hope CivIII will be as good as it seems, but I remember I had great expectations also for ToT and CTP, but in the end... here I am, back to Civ II.

So I think it's possible that soon after the release a lot of people will switch to CivIII, but after some time, it's possible that some will go back to CivII (of course I don't hope so).

I am not knocking Civ II - after all I am a civfanatic.

I just think it would be fun to have a CIV III GOTM ASAP while we are all still more or less on a level playing field. Scoring it shouldn't be a problem. We can just use whatever scoring system comes with the game. (I assume there will be a scoring system...)

It would be fun to see how our Civ III skills develope through the friendly competition of a GOTM.

It doesn't even have to be a formal type of thing at first. Just start a game upload it, call it a GOTM and let people have at it if they want.

That's exactly what I was thinking, donsig. ;) If you're gonna play a game, why not play the GOTM?

By the way, reading about the way the scores are made I believe (and I surely hope!) it's adequate enough to use just that, so we won't have to think of something ourselves! :D It'll make it all less controversial. (no endless debates ;))

Just a thought to keep in mind:

Alternating a Civ2 GOTM with a Civ3 GOTM would give folks the option of playing either or both versions and wouldn't increase the burden on Matrix as much. Also, if we allowed two months to finish, then a player who chose to play only one version would have ample time for completion.

Viva la CivII GOTM!

Personally, the idea of a Civ III GOTM nice and early in it's life is appealing. My concern is that there will be plenty of people who can't use it. My system runs at 233 MHz (hey, it was fast when I bought it!). I tried to play CtP - "forgedaboudid!" Even at the lowest settings it was as slow as the second coming. Hence my (excited) hesitation at purchasing Civ III asap.

How many Civ II GOTM players are necessary to keep it alive? Is 10 or 20 really enough? With 2371 registered CivFanatics, one would expect a higher number of participants. (This from someone who is yet to finish a GOTM game on time). Maybe a higher profile in internal advertising would "pull the crowds".

Some of my computers are not suited for CPU hungry programs, too. Ditto for graphics. In any event, Civ II will be no worse than the 2nd best computer game of all time, if Civ III is bug-free and awesome, as we all expect! ;)

We'll just see how it goes, guys. The GOTM for Civ2 will continue to exists until there are just not enough people to do this. Perhaps we should state that less then 8 people for 2 times in a row means the termination of the GOTM for Civ2...

Im not sure if this has been said or not but, maybe we could have GOTM civII for 1 month the civIII next month and so forth and extend the deadline for each so that everybody will have something to do regardless of whether or not they have civ III. I sure hope civ III lives up to its predecessors.

Perhaps this issue is a done deal, but I heartily recommend Cactus Pete and Gonzo for Civ's idea, alternating GOTMs between Civ II and III, with two months to complete each. I see many, many people (myself included) who enjoy GOTM and try to play, but never or seldom manage to finish a game on time. This solution would:

1. Not be an extra burden on Matrix--only one GOTM each month

2. Keep GOTM for both Civ II and III going

3. Allow a lot more players to participate since there is more time to finish.

4. Allow those (like me) who don't have computers that will run Civ III  to continue to participate in GOTM.

I think this is an excellent idea, and I will lobby hard for it, so be prepared[punch] ;)

No, ainwood, the idea is that only one game would be running at a time. First month, Civ III GOTM, with 2 months to finish. Second month, Civ II GOTM, with 2 months to finish. Yeah, Matrix would be getting completed games for two different games all the time, cause the finish dates would overlap, but he would only need to prepare rankings and etc. for one of those games each month, and would only need to prepare one new game each month. There would be more games submitted, most likely, but otherwise no extra workload :)

Matrix, care to comment on this idea?
