The title says it all, personally, i prefer the Chinese Riders, as that speed in the mid ages is deadly.
 
Riders and Ansar Warriors are great for their speed. Honorable mention to the War Elephant for being a Middle Age tank.
 
The fact that WEs and Keshiks don't require Iron makes them a pain to deal with, pillaging the Iron does no good and with WEs they require nothing but Chivalry. Get Ghandi early or later, but avoid them in the middle. I like the early Cavalry that Riders and Ansars represent, which makes for a tough choice. I give riders the nod, they have the best overall with speed and decent defense.
 
Although I do kind of completely avoid chivary, it does seem kind of useless...I'm the kind of person who rushes tech until they're at least an age behind me before i attack.

I forgot, just what was the other advantage WEs have?
 
In C3C, WE's get +1 hp (i.e. a Reg is 4hp, Vet 5hp, Elite 6hp).

Personally I prefer Ansars, they are cheaper I believe?
 
Who cares about defense? They have the same attack and movement as Riders. For 10 less shields. Bonus!
 
On the other hand the Iroquois Mounted Warriors can conquer everyone before they reach chivalry.
 
If we're talking vanilla, my vote is a tie between samurai and riders. The 4/4/2 makes samis durable defenders against all period attackers, but riders' speed is tough to beat and china's industrious trait means quicker build times/more units.

I like the Samurai, they look and sound cool. Jumbos (elephants) are cool too. Riders and ansars have good movement but I usually skip chivalry altogether and go for cavalry anyway which makes this thread somewhat out of my normal range. Keshiks are ok, but their 10 shield discount doesn't seem as good as the ansars.
 
I'd say that reseraching Chivalry has minimal to non-existent use for builders. For a fast space or diplo game, I can't see it ever really. Knights for short-rushing maybe in 100k game, and Knights Templar isn't horrible for a 20k... but it's not all that great either in my opinion.

Alright, that makes my favorite unique knight The Crusader, since I can conceivably disband some of those Crusaders to rush in a university. It has to be unique, since only one tribe can have Knights Templar, right?

Barracks lawyer!

You're splitting hairs, but I agree with you...just make sure you have a barracks in the city with the Templaqr and instant offense..or instant extra shields. I recently played a game where I had a small island the ONLY units I built (after a few warriors) where from the Templar.
 
Barracks won't give you any more shields for disbanding crusaders. A barracks knaws slightly away at your treasury. I think the AI does rate vets higher than regulars, but I don't think it usually worth it to have vets instead of regulars if you only want your military as a deterrant. Maybe I'm wrong there though. Barracks might help get The Heroic Epic faster in a 20k game, but for most other builder games they seem pretty useless.
 
Just realized what's so annoying about Anasars. You can't short-rush them with temples/granaries. You need 20 shields/turn.
