Favorite and Least Favorite Opponents

I absolutely hate Korea and Kongo.
These two civs are usually the absolute worst runaway civs if left on their own, and they are the reason I would really like an in-game option of banning certain civs from my games.
I don't mind if they are my immediate neighbours (I can conquer them before they get a massive lead) but if I discover them in late Medieval era or onwards, that's going to be a very rough game as they just snowball through the tech tree like nobody's business.
Somewhat true for facing Russia in a religious game as well, but in that situation I can always transition to a different victory condition, and religion by itself doesn't snowball out of control like science does.

I like Sumeria - always an easy friendship early, and discovering him as my neighbour means I'm safe early 90% of the time.

Ever since I started this game Phoenicia seems to be in the vast majority of my games and is always my most helpful and nicest neighbor so I've grown to call her my bff.

That's funny.
Phoenicia is the one neighbour that spawns in at least half of my games as well!
Is this just a statistical fluke, or is there something to it?
These days I just assume that Phoenicia has spawned, and yeah, most of the time she did.

Thank god she's not the most dangerous opponent, even if it does get a bit boring seeing her every other game.

Kongo is by far my least favorite, more for irrational annoyance than gameplay, though he is usually middle of the pack at worst. His nagging about my "refusal" to send my religion to him when I haven't even built my first missionary, his obsequious-looking face that I want to punch, his earworm music... all a big ball of passive-aggressive annoyance.

I'm a little annoyed by Gandhi for similar reasons, like his weird "deterrence" speech, which sounds like a lecture even though he's actually agreeing with you. Plus, I'm pretty sure real-life Gandhi didn't remotely believe in anything like what he says in his Civ VI speech.

Oh, on the "love" side, Scythia. I never get tired of hearing "Our two nations have never been stronger. May you have many victories in times of peace." And she's a great friend and ally to have early on. Less so in later years, when she just ends up pointlessly wasting that huge horse army by having it charge into cannon-fire like a civilization-wide Charge of the Light Brigade.

Not to derail this thread in terms of likes and dislikes, but just on this point; I've played about 10 games end-to-end so far and not once have Germany appeared, either as my Civ to play or as an AI civ (I've just been playing random civ's to get a feel for the game having moved recently from CIV 4). I only have Vanilla too in addition to the DLCs, so there's a smaller pool to "randomly" choose from.

I'm surprised Arabia isn't getting more mention. Always seems to surprise war me in the ancient era, always continues to convert your religion even when you ask him not to, will hate you if you have any kind of religious game, and he's decent in science so can be a hard nut to crack if you take the fight to him.

As for favourite Civs, it's Gilgabro and the Cree, both for obvious reasons. I also love seeing Scotland spawn, as he really, really values early luxuries, as well as Kristina for the diplo favour economy.

For the leader animation: Philip II or Matthias
For the music: Trajan or Matthias
For gettin' along with: Scythian lady

I... don't really like any of them! Maybe Gilgabro (though he usually hates me) or Trajan (as long as he's not a neighbour; he always likes me at least for a while because I like to build a huge empire). Poundmaker is OK too.

The ones I hate the most are probably Mapuche, Korea, Brazil, Macedonia, Pericles and Aztecs - combination of stupid agendas, powerful abilities I have to nix early to counter, or just really unpleasant to go to war with. Oh and John Curtin ALWAYS attacks me! He and Matilda can waltz off.

Georgia and China always hate me but are also very steamrollerable.

Hungary is OK but has hands down the most annoying music in the game. Tomyris says she likes me but quietly eats all my city-states in the background...

Pretty similar to everyone else. I hope John Curtin steps on a lego.

Likes:
  • Sumeria (alliance bro)
  • Sweden (makes the game more fun by existing)
  • Egypt (good trading partner)
  • Cree (good trading partner)
  • Scythia (easy to befriend and not a science or culture threat)
Dislikes:
  • Australia (hyper aggressive warmonger)
  • Russia (cheesy broken Lavra, over the top religion spam)
  • Korea (science runaway threat)
  • Greece (culture runaway threat, both leaders have obnoxious agendas)
  • Kongo (science and culture runaway threat, obnoxious agenda)

I hate Mapuche. I play mostly peacefully, but the little twit keeps building cities towards me and forces me to war with him, whether I'm ready or want to. I'm thinking of just playing a two player tiny map as Alexander with Mapuche there to take my abuse for a change.

This just made me realize the irony that if you played as Eleanor and just absconded with all of the Mapuches' cities, Lautaro would love you for it. :crazyeye:

Civ, the game, like real life, often doesn't make sense, it just is what it is. Have another swig and carry on, I say.

Gilgamesh can always be friended if you send a DOF on the first turn you meet him though.
I love meeting him for that reason, because as long as I don't slip up, I have a friend for a very long time (and no war carts on my doorstep). :-)

Hungary has become my biggest enemy. Matthias always spawns as my neighbor, he's incredibly aggressive, he generally techs pretty well, and not only can he screw with your suzerainity but woe be to you if he levees a nearby city state.

Alex is annoying just for constantly yelling at me for not being at war, but he's not too difficult to actually deal with.

Russia as my neighbor means I'm getting choral music in all my cities - pretty nice.

Tamar: All the hyper aggressive behavior of a purse dog, and somehow even less actual threat. And she's always there.

Alex and Gorgo are, for sure, my least favorite. They constantly yell at me for not being at war.

Beside the obvious favorite Gilgabro, I love playing against Matthias. I put him in most of my games because of his awesome music, and we always get along. Also, I bought GS at launch yet never once see his agenda reactions in game, ever, despite playing against him a lot.

Among all the new entries to the Civ franchise, I hate the Mapuche the most, such a terrible addition and design. I hate playing as them, I hate playing against them.

One of my least favorites gotta be Mvemba. Always whining about religious conversions. Though he rarely declares war like Alex and Gilgamesh like to do. My favorite is probably Harald because we tend to get along.
