Here's my situation.

I was playing civ at the prince level for a while, and then I stopped. I am now trying to get back into civ and am wondering which civ you all suggest(I used to play Romans, bu tnow I'm not so sure)

I also thought that this would bring up an interesting discussion on what people think is the best civ.

There's not much difference bet choosing which civ to play as your starting tribe. Basically it will be how you play the game that will determine your success in the game; not which civ you choose to play.
Just choose whomever you like best or find most interesting or intriguing.

There are a handful of very minor consquences of choosing your civ, but nothing that should be of concern. An important issue to some might be the ease of use/contrast of pieces.

Another thread has some discussion about what people think are the "toughest" AIs. So if you really hate to face Russians and Romans, you might choose white.

With experience, you'll find that there will be very little effect on your overall game no matter who you play, and no matter who you face.

Do certain civilizations have advantages over others to begin with?

No. Not in the context of games such as Age of Empires. There are no unique technologies, for instance. However, leaders of different civs have different characteristics, such as "perfectionist". A perfectionist leader (check the diplomacy screen in a game to determine the AI leaders' characteristics) will tend to build improvements in citys, and make them bigger and more powerful, at the expense of expansion.

The Americans. They usually start with a bunch of techs (Including Masonry!). Go for Invention and Trade first. Build the pyramids and settlers while you are waiting and trade tech. You'll become a super power in no time.
doesn´t the number of techs you have in the beginnig depends on your starting location?

it´s easier for some civs to research som techs, i don´t know exactly how it works.

I think what you have to work with in the beginning of the game (i.e. how many settlers, what tech etc) depends on how near you are to other civs. And maybe on whether you are on the same continent with them?

Actually, I play as the Zulus, because I got tired of getting my butt kicked all over the map by them. Otherwise, I dispise them when I'm not playing them.
Sometimes, I play the Celts, or the Carthaginians.

My current favourites are the Russians...I had the Zulus in my latest game and they were the second civ I killed :rocket: , after the English. The English were nearer so I had to kill them first.

It doesn't really matter, but it's kinda whoever you don't want to play against. If the Zulus are always kickin' your butt, play as the Zulus or one of the other green civs.(i'm not sure which those are). For some reason when i play it's always the Zulus who are the worst. The Russians are always my biggest competitors.

Germans all the way. :)

Not that it really makes much of a difference, if any at all, what civilization the player chooses, I do have one I tend to re-enact a certain Civ several times. Of course, I've played all the "usual" ones over and over again. The one I do tend to create myself is the Byzantines, usually renaming the Romans or the Greeks to become the mighty Byzantine Empire under Alexius Comnenus, Belisarius ( actually ol' Bel was "just" a general, but still ) or some other half-obscure famous type. :king:

I like the Americans for obvious reasons
