Favorite Civ?

My fav is the Ottomans, though China and Celts aren't far behind. I like the combination of SCI and IND and the greater chance of scientific great leaders.

Off-Topic: It's NickyJ in the Civ3 forums! I've never seen you before in here...
I come here once in a while. I recently got back into Civ III mode after having burned myself out a year ago.

Ottomans and then the Persians. I love those cheap libraries and I always run republic so less unit support for workers is helpful, plus both have great offensive UUs. Persia is better for a map where I expect early conflict, and the Ottomans for a later one. I really do love that Sipahi though :D, 8 attack and 3 movement will crush anything up to infantry, and a Sipahi Army... It will mow down even infantry! Crashing outward from a mid sized empire to world power in a few turns of crushing Sipahi offensive can really get me going.

The Sipahi is the best big hitter until tanks come along, and armies of them can handle infantry. The Ottomans are my go-to Space VC tribe.

I had never thought of that. Their sci. attribute plus that late UU would go a good ways toward a strong end game for Space...

I might just rev up a game with the Ottos for a change. Thanks for the suggestion.

it's true, defensive or ship UUs aren't that effective (Dutch, English, Portugal). I'd rather have a strong offensive UU. (.... is there a list of C3C?)
Combine that with a middle ages UU, IND, AGR, SEA... and I'm fine.

It is so that most conquests are done by cavalry, that the world is conquered before tanks. Thus the Sipahi would be most useful. But...

The deciseve moemtn in a game is the first part. A good expansion and the first war are the most important and thus would be aided greatest by a good UU.

My favorite civ is Carthage, bytheway, not because of their UU (it "sucks") or their traits of industrious and seafaring (nice combi but a bit average), but because I like their color and because i like Carthage and Hannibal.

(post #100, is there a price for that?)

Scandinavia hands down 6.2.1 and amphibious attack in the early middle ages......leetttsss gooo!!!

Even on Pangaea its the most powerful offensive unit for half an era and you can still conquer the coasts with it, certainly one of the better UU's.

I personally like to set it as random though my top 3 would be France, China and Japan, They're all great in they're own way.

Greeks are still my favourite. Excellent cheap, non-resource-dependent from the start UU, excellent traits, good original ancient-age atmosphere. What hasn't it got!

The Greeks are a very good one, I like them in the earlier versions of the game, but go with the Dutch in Conquests. My background is Dutch, so I admit to being a tad partial.

Practically, Persia. The Immortal helps knocking out an early rival and securing expansion space, leading to an eventual cavalry rush with cities churning them out.

But my favorite is the Mongols. I've always been obsessed with them and they've been my favorite since Civ 1. No reason gameplay wise-- just a big fan of their history.

Austria is cool too.
They are Industrious (faster workers, gotta love them).
Militaristic too, so faster unit upgrades. Which means a few more armies per game. And more wins by your units.
Their UU? If you like the Cavalry (6/3/3), you'll LOVE the Hussar - a 7/3/3 Cavalry replacement. What's not to like.

You should mention that Austria is in your mod, and not in the basic game, Theov.

I will say that Austria should be in the game however. Just not sure about eliminating the Sumerians.

I waged a long time, but decided that the Sumerians added the least to the game. We have many Civs from that era and area.
