Xerxes, go play my scenario, it shows the byzantines in it starting in 1914.

and Xen, I already said i know who the byzantines are and what their contribution to history and philosophy is. You keep shouting off as if i know nothing. You dont understand my ideas, The Byzantines DO deserve to be in Civ3, but they shouldnt be before several of the other worly civs out there.

And Birdjaguar, I like the idea you gave above, i would really like to see a civ editor, or perhaps a damn book that explained ust how the editor works.

the byzantines arew in conquests?

LOL! those guys at Firaxis must be getting desperate or something if they picked the byzantines as a civ.

Your EXACT words Sarevok-mot exactly telling as to how you feel Byzantium deserves to be in- I think I understand your thoughts perfectlly- they go as follws-

-Byzantium dose not fit into your want list of civs for the x-pack

-You make a comment which shows you dissapointment

-this comment also shows how you feel the byzantium isnt even a civ worthy of consideration of being in the game

-Big, Bad, Byzantine Xen ;) shows up, fit for a alcohol induced brawl over the issue

- isserved up a big heapen of Byzantium goodness ;)

not ot insult you, but I think i have a pretty good grasp on the issue, and as such, i intend to make it perfectlly clear, the Byzantium has earned its place in full, and even diserves to be amoung the top choices for the x-packs in any future civ games

you like to insult me dont you Xen?

That was a while ago, and I thought a little and I NOW believe that the byzantines are worthy to be a civ in civ3, but id rather see some1 else rather than them because of their striking resemblance to civs already in the game (Greece, Rome).

I play Half-Life. The last levels on the alien planet suck.
But thats for another forum....

I vote for the Netherlands... :)

And why Is our UU a Swiss Mercenary???

<Chieftess> <BigFurryMonster> Q: Why do the Dutch have a Swiss UU ??
<Firaxis-Ed> Warpstorm- Honestly I don't know. That is up to the Bosses
<Gobi> The professional Swiss armies of the late Middle Ages dominated the European battlefield
<Gobi> Their rise coincides exactly with the rise of the Netherlands into a global power
<Gobi> The Dutch had limited manpower resources and recruited a higher percentage of Swiss Mercenaries than any other European power
<Gobi> Basically we had two new civs entering in that exact Age of Discovery time period.
<Gobi> We gave Portugal a naval UU and the Dutch a land unit

I had history lessons at school but I never heard about Swiss Mercenaries in the Dutch medieval armies... I only heard abut our great battles in Naval Warfare... not on land..

On that note I belive the English should get a ship unit that
1)actually exists
2)is actually useful

Man-O-War was just a general term and in the game sucks beyond belief. In fact the English were a particularly weak civ. Which is odd considering in reality they are one of the biggest contributers to world history, especially during the Industrial Era, which they practically invented.

Yeah, I meant Belisarius. It's bean a few years since I read my Byz history book. Xen, have you read John J. Norwich book on Byzantium?

@Sarevok- sorry, but somtimes I go a little overboard on whole Byzantium thing... no, I dont play half life- to be honest I havent played any games, including civ for a while- This x-pack comes at just the right time to save me ;)

@ToadFaerie-no, unfortunatley, I havent read many books on them, and those I have are more pointed to milatary histories of the 5th-9th centuries (the time of the cataphract! :D), most other infoe comes from numerous sites detailing them :)

Norwich is short on military details, but still good reading.
Armor of the 11th century is my general interest, but the more I read from any time period or topic, the greater my interest grows.

Has anyone asked why the powers that be chose Theodora rather than one of the true Greats, like Constantine, Basil, etc? There are even other empresses I'd choose over Theodora. Unfortunately, I can't remember their names. I'm re-reading my Norwich books though; maybe know better in a month or so.

Constantine is still a "Roman" emperor, and the besics is, they wanted to be politically correct, so the chose her over the obvious choice, Heraclius II...

In this order:
1. The Netherlands
2. Portugal
3. Austria (!)
4. Byzantium
5. Sumeria
6. Maya
7. Hittite
8. Inca

Tough to decide, though. After the Netherlands, there really isn't much separating the civs.

care to elaborate?

I think he/she means not much seperating personal preference of Civs. Not, as might be assumed, cultural differance.

if that is the case, then all that would have needed to be done is a "IMO"- three more letters is cap will not kill anyone, and thta is all that is needed (in most cases) to aviod my rather.... verbose responses...

I meant what Emperor Xerxes said, no need for any "verbose responses":)
