Great Engineer, hands down. Especially early in the game when you get those wonders in 1 turn. :)

I saw the Great Scientist void too!

This is a bit of a situation-dependent thing, although I opted for the Great Engineer as probably the most generically useful Great Person - even if you miss World Wonders they can still be used on National Wonders. I tend not to Lightbulb them, but they've often got tempting technologies on offer.

All Great People have their roles, and it depends upon your objectives at the time (e.g. I'll curse the popping of a Great Scientist when striving for a Cultural victory, whereas vice versa with a Spaceship).

GM. They may not be the statistical best but I enjoy finding out how much $$$ I get from their mission in a foreign city. Watching the treasury bulge is fun IMO.

Who's your favourite Great Guy and Why?

Why did you exclude the great scientist from your poll?

My answer is it depends. I find great prophets more valuble in the early
game for shrines and not as valuable in the late game. I like scientists
for academies, engineers to rush build wonders and merchants can be
a big help for trade missions to help upgrade your standing army. Artists
rock for culture victory.

I like scientists best as well, always like to have several for my commerce cities.
Is there any way you can change your poll to include them? :)

Great Merchant, without a doubt. An early trade mission can get you 850+ gold well before 500 BC. With that much money I can debt finance REX. More cities now will give me a huge edge later. More of an edge, in my opinion, than any single GPed tech or building.

Artist, coz it is useful in late game, when you are targeting to cultural victory, and in earlier game you can flip enemys cities to you. And you can flip that important uranium/alumine mine to you with that.

Early Great Scientists or early Great Merchants are killer, but there are points in many games where the other ones help immensely. You left the scientist out on purpose just to keep the poll more balanced, didn't you? That early Academy helps better than any early wonder to get that science city running... Alright... I'll vote Merchant. Wait, but I like Engineers when I am in build mode... oh, wait, that General really speeds up my unit production and we all know how important those are... oh, the merchant gives you all that money... Haalp! :mischief:

As the first great person, I would prefer a Engineer (quick wonder) or Scientist (that academy)... the merchant could come after that to finance expansion and the quick tech rush.

edit - come to think of it, the Engineer is useful pretty much the whole game, whereas most of the rest of them have times when you will not need the help they can give. My favorite is still Great Scientist, but I think the most useful would be the GE.

Great Prophet, if you have religion(s). Gotta love 'em to death for that... :p

Otherwise... Great Engineer. They work wonders. :p

Well I guess you left GS out, since they are obvious the best, therefore I voted GE. Not only can you some important wonders you otherwise wouldn't be able to build, but they also lightbulb great techs.

Wow, nobody mentioned GM, my research and military insurance :)

I love them all as I have a use for them all. I probably rate them as most use in the following periods.

GP - early game
GS - early / middle game
GE - early / middle / Late game
GM - middle / Late game
GA - going for cultural win
GG - early, middle and late game

Looking at this I probably must select the great Engineer, though I really love early great priests!
