I was wondering what everybody's favoutite most favored starting position on the map is (given that you're playing a pre-made world)?
I've been started on my last two games in Australia, which I don't like much.
Not enough room for expansion before you have to start looking over seas.
Although having said that, you can get on with creating your Empire without too much interference.

My favourite place to start? Probably South America - plenty of lush land and the option of North America to the north if you get bored south of the equator/ fill up your land.

Simply because I like exploration and navies, I like Indonesia or the caribbean - many islands, rough terrain (read: good special terrain). On a world map, where these two areas are too small, I'll take china or the middle east.

I'd have to go with N. America. Unless the Sioux are with you, you're pretty much free to spread out unhindered. Plus, I figure all the huts can make up for the lack of contact with other civs (as far as techs go)

I like North Africa either egypt or carthage. If you just have one other civ on the continent it keeps you in contact with the world but allows you to either Share or conquer the continent. VERY strategic.

Australia isn't so bad. You can get 6-7 good cities going before you have to expand. Plus you can be relatively uniterrupted. Then it's a simple matter of exploring the Micronesian archipalego and inhabiting Asia, or going along the bottom to NZ, Africa or America.

With the abundance of start positions in Australia, I'd think it very prestigious if you could start in Australia, instead of a crowded Europe!

My favorite is either India, Germany or England. In India, you are near jungle where you can find gems for trade, in Germany, well, I just like it, and in England, you can have your captial in a relitively safe place away from other civs until you can conqure the continent. It's only really a problem if the Celts are bothering you.

I think it depends alot on what the other civs are. If you are choosing the civs yourelf them it is easy to arrange it so that you have a sizeable area to expand. Usually I play as the Russians because I can usually expand either into Asia, Nrothern Europe or mainland Europe.

I prefer not to play on the world map as I like the suspense and excitement of the new. So it's usually a random map and with my predilection for OCC, it takes a bit of time and a few restarts to get a suitable position.

I suppose a random map is more realistic because on a world map you find out where you are quite quickly and then you can head for spots with good resources. On a random game you have to actually discover the shape of all the continents and where the resources are.

My favourite starting positon would have to be an Island because as Valdy.com said u have lots of time to build up your empire and Army.My favourite is probably Britain.;)

It depends how big the island is. I would rather have a small island at the top or bottom of the map which was linked to a big continent so that my settlers could continue their expansion :)

One intringuing OCC game was based on a one-square island with a few special whale and fish squares (naturally). The pirates could not land of course and your city (even with a phalanx) could adequately withstand the rammings by their vessels in the early game.

I usually don't use World Maps, but when I do, I like places with rivers. Not Europe though, because it's so crowded. Probably North America, or Europe if there aren't too many Civs playing. I prefer having one Civ on the same continent as me though, like Hannibol43 said ;)
