Favourite Wonder

I build the SoZ if I can get Ivory. I build the UN if I can, so I don't lose by a UN vote. If I get an early SGL, I rush the Pyramids. Mostly, I don't build any wonders, but some are worth building for various reasons.

The wonder I almost always try to build if I have the resources is the SoZ. Relatively cheap wonder, the AC are extremely powerful combatants, and when they are obsolete you can disband them to recover the shield investment. Selective disbanding can keep you from wasting production in cities with inconvenient production totals, so they are "high-leverage" shields.

The wonder I like having the best is the Great Pyramids. Not only is it the most recognizable wonder, but the effects are timeless and dramatic. I don't build it without a leader, though, because I just can't afford that many shields that early in the game.

I don't like most of the late-game wonders. The Hoover Dam is about the last one I actually like.

Ive personally always loved the Collosus, but i generally get any i can
The Great Libary is also one of the best it keeps you well ahead it cant go too wrong with that one

The pyramids are really good, but I was wondering why does having a gigantic stone tomb make it easier for your population to grow? I don't see the conection.

The connection is historical. An early theory about the why the Egyptians built the pyramids included that they were built as gigantic ganaries. This theory persisted throughout Christiandom for much of the middle ages (they were the granaries of Joseph), and the idea has been powerful in pyramid lore. Christian scholars of the time viewed the pyramids as divinely inspired and pre-Rosetta Stone it was thought that the hieroglyphics were the teachings of God. Also, the pyramid shape is sometimes thought to resemble the shape of a pile of grain.

So why not?

It makes at least as much sense to me as a statue that you need ivory to build, but which produces crazed horseman.

well.... the thing about the Statue of Zeus is that it was made out of Ivory and Gold, huge amounts of it, along with other precious stones

as to why it produces crazed horsemen, idk

It's situational. I like the SoZ if I am militaristic, pyramids for a commercial civ with early age UU.

Hoover dam might be the most powerful all around.

I have started thinking that I *Own* the Statue of Zeus. This is a bad thing. Now instead of looking for Iron, I look for elephants... and they are rather pink

Hoover is a Dam good wonder if you build factories. If you don't use factories, it's probably because you've already won...

  • Statue of Zeus: I always build this Wonder if I have early access to Ivory. Those Ancient Cavalry units are almost too good.
  • Great Library: You can go to zero science and ride on the AIs' coattails for a while--though it works best if you can get in contact with at least most of your opponents, even if you have to deploy suicide boats. If I can't build it myself, I'll take it. On that note, taking the GL city will get you caught up if you're behind in tech you're behind.
  • Pyramids: I still love the Pyramids, the wonder that I used to rave about, but I don't build them often nowadays unless I can use a SGL.
  • Knights Templar: I still regard this wonder and (moreover) its Crusaders with distaste, but I'll build it if I can. (I don't have to think of the game's Crusaders as an exact equivalent of their historical counterpart, especially considering that we're writing a history of a world of our own, do I?)
  • Leonardo's Workshop: You need to keep up with upgrades in a warmongering game.
  • Theory of Evolution: For the tech jump to:
  • Hoover Dam: POWER to the people, baby!

Aside from these, the Temple of Artemis is good, and I build this if I'm playing for culture (which is often), as the player who does get it will be hard to beat. On the other hand, with expiration at Education, it doesn't last long enough. On the other other hand, in one of my two current games I did build it and managed to get as far as Military Tradition using only the Great Library--meaning I was on tech par--before GL gave me Education, so it can be stretched out, with luck.

All in all, though, if you're playing a very warlike game:
Statue of Zeus + Knights Templar + Leonardo's Workshop = Kiss your AI heinie goodbye! :assimilate:
