Wandering the World
Thanks Immy. I really like you telling us ahead of time how many events there are... and what kind.
The Succession - Chapter 4
Last lines
Though the shield was shaken by the Imps sudden attacks, the retreat was not nearly enough to shake the high moral caused by the complete victory over Yagus Bandits.
The Bandits had been the largest band purporting to be a noble army, and with it gone, little remained but to find and arrest the traitors. And that shouldnt be too hard, right? With a large enough reward, even the Nobles staunchest supporters would remember their true loyalties.
The Missive for General Caswa came as she rode in at the head of a column of the Shield.
The Magus Requests your presence in his chambers, as soon as you are ready.
In his chambers? Odd. Nobody had been in the Magus chambers since last years assassin.
Caswa walked through the Silent halls and into the Maguss Chamber. The Wane face looked up at her and weakly smiled, as she kneeled.
Magus! My lord! What happened? she asked, as he coughed harshly.
Oh, you know Old age, Sickness Im not young, anymore. Which is why I need to talk to you.
yes, Magus?
Oh, Do get up. You know you dont have to kneel before me. Here. Help me to the window. I have something to show you. He extended a thin arm to her, which she took over her shoulders. They walked to the window. Look at it all. The magus gestured with his free arm. Cevedes. In a way, it represents all of Amure. First home of the Children of Kylorin. First city of Amure. Thousands of people, all working to make Amure a better place for their children. At the cost of everyone elses children, of course. They are constantly fighting, squabbling for a better place. My Job is to keep them from each others throats and working together. But Im growing old. I feel Arawns drawn in breath, Gyras warm embrace, Basiums looming presence But I cant leave yet. I have failed my Duty.
Never, My lord!
Dont contradict me, General! I have failed I have no heir. But not completely. He paused I have you!
me?
Yes. You! Close your mouth. Astonishment ill befits the new Ruler of Amure.
But, Im not a noble.
Rubbish. You lead the shield, you have the skill. You obviously are a descendant of Kylorin. And any ways, didnt we just crush the nobles?
But the people wont accept me!
The people love you! Shut up. Its all arranged.

Exhausted, General Caswa sat on the Throne of Amure, the first to touch it not of the Line of the Magus. The cheers of the crowds still ringing in her ears, she wallowed in the first moment of rest she had had all day.
A servant appeared at her side.
My lady, An orc woman wishes to speak to you
An orc?
She looks important.
At those words, the door flew open, and In strode a tall woman, glowing with in inner light. Her pale skin had a greenish tint, and her hair was bright red. But her most arresting feature were her eyes, which seemed to be embers, burning bright. She bowed.
Greetings, general. I attended your coronation this morning. A most splendid affair.
thank you
I am Lady Ember, daughter of Jelhid the Inspired, Niece of Grak the Cruel, and High priestess of Bhall. At this the guards started forward, but general Caswa waved them away.
And what does Lady Ember have to say to the general of the Amurites?
She proposes an Alliance, and comes to ask for help.
Go on.
My uncle and Father are fools! To them, the world is a giant battlefield! A Great pillageaing ground! A giant field to set on fire! They dont understand that they arent the strongest people around, that the nations around them could unite to crush them like flies. The orcs need someone Strong to lead them! A follower of Oghma as well as of Bhall! the passion was evident in her voice.
And this would be you?
Yes. I have gathered others who are in agreement with me. We are ready. We just need support from the civilized nations, and assurance that we wont be attacked during out struggle. We need money and Men.
And what would we get in exchange?
A secure southern border. A south that you know wont rise up and attack you on a whim. An ally instead of an enemy.
All right! Enough! General Caswa laughed, You will have what you need. Now join me for Dinner, please
Elegy
“Wake, my child.” The soft voice Stirred the old lady from her sleep. A bright, though soothing light greeted her eyes. As they adjusted, she saw a beautiful woman, awash with golden light, standing in the middle of the room. The woman extended a hand, and the Old lady took it.
Puzzled, she asked “My lady Oghma? To what do I deserve this honor?”
Oghma smiled, a bit sadly, and said “Come, I wish to speak with you.” The old lady hobbled to the goddess, and pushed her white hair away from her eyes with her weak arms. The Old lady started, and turned to grab her cane.
“You wont need that, Child.” Oghma spoke.
The two slowly walked out into the dark corridor, silently drifting through the palace, The goddess supporting the Old woman, stopping in the quarters of the Shield of Kylorin.
A few of the shield were crying, others sat huddled in small groups, quiet.
“why…?”
“Do not worry. They can neither see nor hear you.”
“Why are they in mourning?”
Oghma smiled again, with the same tint of sadness. “Come.”
The floated up through the palace, slowly, hearing soft bits of conversation.
“The arrangments are made?”
“… Yes, the Bannor just rode in, and Lady Ember will be here tomorrow…”
The Goddess took her arm from around the shoulders of the Old lady. Flipping Auburn hair, tinged with grey, she asked the goddess. “What’s going on? Ember hasn’t left her palace in years… not since she left the rule to her son.” Again Oghma smiled sadly.
The continued to drift slowly through the palace.
“So, it’s settled. The next ones will be called Caswallen…”
“…so Sad…”
“… Poison gold? Great times…”
“… any time, now…”
“…yes… so weak at supper…”
They drifted off the tallest parapet, into the air, slowly floating higher and higher.
The Woman spoke, stretching her arms languorously upwards. “Ooh… the night air is doing wonders for my health… I feel years younger. My lady? You were going to say something?”
Oghma was silent for a minute, then pointed outwards, at the construction site of the New Cevedes archives and library. “I am satisfied. You have done well by me. Knowledge is at the forefront of the Amure mind, and people are living better because of it.”
Bright eyed, the woman said “Yes, look… over there, that was a slum, but since we built a school there, they have rebuilt and reconstructed, and are a model community. Crime and poverty have sunk so drastically it’s unbeleiveable… who would have believed it? 20 years ago, no one went there if they could help it. Now… Knowledge truly defeats all evil…”
“Yes, truly, you have done well.” Again, that odd sad smile.
“I have please you, my lady?”
“Very much, my child.” And suddenly, the old lady saw that, indeed, she was a child, now. The Smiled at the goddess, and asked “When I die, will I come to live with you? “
As the sun peeked over the horizon, the goddess smiled. “My poor, poor, sweet girl. You are already dead.”
Far below, Bells tolled.
Thomas:
I didn't get to reading your stories until just now and i have to say they are probably the best i've seen from you yet. They are very good, truely haunting. The ending is very beautiful and poetic.
EDIT: although i guess i now have to change the bit in the update that i had written about her
Immac.
Sorry, but reading Oghma as a she sounds to me as weird as calling Peter a female. I probably read too much of the Lebor Gabala.rather than forfeit the libraries and knowledge of his world Oghma releases a mist over his heaven
Is it safe to assume that this is all of the update involving our continent?
