Anyone playing on Vista 32-bit, with ATI Radeon HD3800 series card?
I am using Catalyst all along, just upgraded to Catalyst 8.6 today. At first my system locks up a lot - I found it to be a problem with the card overheating, and solved it by using ATI Tool (the beta version for Vista) to override fan speed.
That got me running fine for a while. At first, I can play CIV and FFH0.31 without problems. Then when updating to FFH0.32, I found a new problem in the video card driver - it wasn't responding and Vista decided to restart it. This driver restart problem is very common -- just google and you'll see -- but among all my games, it only happens in FFH. Yes, just FFH, I can play CIV without problems. My other games are fine too, including "The Witcher" (a very pretty 3D RPG), Portal, Sacred Underworld (3D Diablo clone), Oblivion and Heroes of Might and Magic V (3D TBS).
I tuned down the graphics level in FFH0.32, from 1600x1200 to 1024x768. Then the problem disappeared. I upgraded to BtS 3.17 and FFH0.32g today, and it's happening again (in 1024x768).
It happens very quickly in every FFH0.32 game. Usually just a turn or two. The screen would freeze while the video driver was being restarted. I would have a few seconds afterwards, before another video driver restart. Then I tried vanilla BtS. I played for about 80 turns without problems.
I don't think the difference is that large between vanilla BtS and FFH0.32g... it's just a few turns, there're very little going on in the screen. Still the card is all stressed out and the video driver died...
I'm not sure where the problem is... anyone having the same problem?
