Chapter 11: The Two Front War
Part III: Day of Reckoning
Part III: Day of Reckoning
The year is 1252 PA, and the people of Tycoon have been locked in a bitter, two-front war against the Esthari to the West and Fiends to the Northeast. While things have been quiet on the Western front since the capture of Fisherman's Horizon, a steady stream of Trolls have been pouring into our territory from the North, and our troops are hard-pressed to fight them off before they plunder and pillage all that we've worked so hard to build.
Two Deinonychus parties maul two bands of Trolls outside Carwen and Kanark, while two of our Minotaurs each defeat a band of Trolls outside Fisherman's Horizon and Kanark. Even though all the Trolls invading our territory are dead, more continue to pour in from the North.
Not all news this year is grim, however. Tycoon Castle readies another Villager party and begins building a Marketplace to boost our revenue, and with the completion of the Iron Road and the acquisition of the knowledge of Feudalism, we begin upgrading all our Bangaa Trackers to Bangaa Gladiators (Bangaa Gladiator = 5,5,2 ignore movement accross mountains and hills, requires Bangaa and Iron), as well as switching the training queue in Tower of Worus and Carwen to Bangaa Gladiators. The training queue in Kanark is also changed to a Gladiator (5,5,1 requires Iron).
Word also arrives via diplomatic channels that Garden and Shinra have signed a peace treaty, which is good, except for the fact that we did not even know they were at war in the first place!
1258 PA, Science Advisor Cid announces that his crack team of political scientists have developed a plan for running a Monarchy. Queen Reina decides to put of changing the government until we get the Marketplace in Tycoon Castle finished (among other things). Ritz Malheur, the Foreign Advisor gifts Construction to Garden in order to keep them from falling too far behind in research.
On the battle front, this year is a day of reckoning for the Fiends: Two Deinonychus parties and a Bangaa Gladiator party mercilessly slaughter three bands of Trolls between Carwen and Kanark without taking a single loss.
The Bangaa Gladiator party North of Carwen is then attacked by three bands of Trolls, and while they impale the first two waves of Trolls on their spears, the third band kills them to the last Bangaa and more Trolls pour into our territory through the gap that is opened up with the death of our Bangaa.
Lonka builds its Temple in 1264 PA and begins construction of a Town Hall.... Graft and Corruption is already becoming a huge problem in the Kingdom, but switching to a Monarchy will help that somewhat. Tower of Worus finishes training another Bangaa Gladiator party and also begins building a Marketplace... The Kingdom of Tycoon will hopefully soon become a merchant's paradise, with Gil flowing into our coffers.
Two elite Deinonychus parties finish off the last two bands of Trolls in our territory. It would seem that the last of the Trolls from the Massive Horde of Fiends (yes, that does merit the capital letters) have finally been slain!
Cloud sends an emissary later asking to trade World Maps and Chief Advisor Takayama accepts immediately. The entirety of the Gongaga Peninsula, as well as the town of Gongaga itself is revealed to the North of 7th Heaven. The last nomadic Native Village on the continent is also revealed to the Northeast of North Corel. The emissary also reports that AVALANCHE has started building the Temple of the Goddess.
Merchant caravans traveling through the capitol later in the year also report that the Shinra Corporation has founded Rocket Town on the East coast of the Shinra Peninsula, while Galbadia has established the town of Nectar on the coast Southeast of Lonka.
They also report that Esthar has founded Shumi Village along the Fisherman's Horizon River to the Northwest of Fisherman's Horizon... Hopefully we'll have enough troops to capture the town (and its Iron mine) around the time our Military Alliance with AVALANCHE expires.
The influence of Jacole expands a second time during the year 1270, bringing more territory under our sway, as well as giving us a solid border with the Garden town of Timber. Carwen finishes training another Bangaa Gladiator party and begins building a Marketplace. The Bangaa Gladiators are sent to destroy a den of Fiends that likely served as the gathering point for the massive horde of Trolls that had so recently plagued our kingdom.
Another veteran Minotaur emerges from the Tomb of the Unknown King in Tycoon Castle in 1276. That same year, construction on the Marketplace in Tycoon Castle is finally complete and Queen Reina orders construction on the Ru'lude Gardens to commence. She then calls up Chief Advisor Takayama and Domestic Advisor Sarisa and tells them to start the transition from a Tribal Council to a Monarchy. They enact the Transition Plan immediately, plunging the Kingdom into a short period of chaos as they begin implementing the government reforms. (2 turns of Anarchy.... Boy do I love Religious civilizations!)
In the far North, the Settler party, escorted by a veteran Deinonychus party has finally completed their perilous journey through the Northern Frontier:
The town of Istory is founded on the Istory Peninsula, and a canal is quickly dug between the Istory Sea and the Wutai Sea. Now merchant vessels can travel between the Arctic Ocean and the Wutai Sea, and the best part is that WE control the access point! The town mayor tells his people to start building a Shrine as soon as the dust from the government transition settles.
In 1282 PA, while the chaos of the government transition is going on, the Weaver's Shop in Lonka produces another Treasure shipment, which is picked up by the Bangaa Gladiators in Lonka and hauled back to Tycoon Castle. Another Bangaa Gladiator party destroys a den of Fiends to the West of Jacole and collects 25 Gil worth of loot, however they spot a Ghost Ship on the Wutai Sea! (Ghost Ship = Barb sea unit in this mod and its stats are: 4,3,3, transports 5 units)
The Government Transition ends in 1288 with a well-ordered Monarchy established in the Tycoon Kingdom. Reina's first act as High Queen is to allot money from our HUGE stash of Gil to hire extra workers to hurry the Shrine in Istory and the Town Hall in Lonka.
The current plan is to have ALL towns have a Shrine, a Temple, a Town Hall, a Marketplace and a Barracks in them, followed by a Library and a Harbor for Coastal towns.
1294 PA, Fisherman's Horizon finishes planting its Rubber Plantation and begins building a Shrine. Lonka completes its Town Hall in record time and begins building a Marketplace. Istory finishes its Shrine and starts building a Temple, while Jacole finishes training a Bangaa Gladiator party and begins building a Barracks. The Bangaa Gladiators are sent North to destroy the Den of Fiends that spawned the HUGE horde that was spotted earlier by our ill-fated elite Deinonychus party. Tower of Worus also trains a Bangaa Gladiator party and begins building a Marketplace.
In the meantime, a pack of Bandersnatches is spotted in the forests South of Kanark, and we receive word that President Rufus Shinra has begun construction on the Morhen Lighthouse.
Villager parties building a road into the hills outside Fisherman's Horizon spot a band of wounded Trolls in the frontier between Fisherman's Horizon and Esthar, so a Bangaa Gladiator party is sent from Fisherman's Horizon to protect them, while the Knight party that was guarding them is sent to reinforce the town's garrison.
In the East, Kanark finishes training the first Gladiator party and begins building a Temple, while a Deinonychus party from Kanark kills the Bandersnatch pack spotted earlier.
A little while later, Cid announces that the Temple of the Ancients has paid off once again:
We have learned the secrets of Engineering and how to run a Republic from visiting scholars, so Cids research team begins studying Monotheism. Now that we have the knowledge of Engineering, we can build Trebuchets, plant forests, bridge rivers and train Velociraptor parties, as well as upgrading our existing Deinonychus parties.
Word also reaches the capitol that the Shinra Corporation has started building the South Gate (South Gate = The Great Wall).
Another Veteran Minotaur emerges from the Tomb of the Unknown King in 1306 PA, on top of which, the influence of Tycoon Castle expands for the third time, making it one of the most culturally influential cities on the planet! The Incense Manufactory in Carwen and the Iron Foundry in Jacole also produce treasure shipments this year.
Carwen finishes training a Bangaa Gladiator party and begins building a Marketplace, while Sephiroth begins mutating all our Deinonychus parties into Velociraptor parties. The Expansion of Tycoon Castle's Influence reveals yet another Fiend den in the area, and a Bangaa Gladiator party is sent forth to deal with them.
At this time, Rally-Bo, a dwarf known to Queen Reina appearst at Court and offers to establish a Dwarven Engineer's Guild in one of our cities, since we know the secrets of Engineering now. Queen Reina aggrees and authorizes Chief Advisor Takayama to change the production in Tower of Worus to the Dwarf Engineer's Guild. (Dwarf Engineer's Guild is a Small Wonder that boots city production and generates a Dwarf Engineer Squad every 15 turns. Dwarf Engineer Squads can either improve terrain at twice the speed of normal workers OR found cities.... I'm likely to use them to build a road to the selected city spot, then found the city, at least until all the territory has been claimed).
Chief Advisor Takayama also requests and is granted funding to rush the Temple in Istory and the Marketplace in Lonka.
The Bangaa Gladiator party outside Fisherman's Horizon finishes off the band of Wounded Trolls and then spots a fiend den nearby as well as two Esthar Warrior parties, one of which attacks and kills the Bangaa Gladiators. (how a 2,2,1 unit managed to kill a 5,5,2 unit is beyond me )
In 1312 PA, Istory not only completes its Temple, but its influence expands as well.... Soon the Spices in the nearby forest will be ours! Istory begins building a Town Hall to help keep Corruption down. The Bangaa Gladiators hauling the Treasure shipment from Jacole finally reach Tycoon Castle, bringing a much-needed boost to our treasury, while the Bangaa Gladiator party from Tycoon Castle wipes out the den of fiends in the South.
Ritz Malheur sells Philosophy to Garden for their World Map, and Literature to Shinra for their World Map.
A Minotaur that was guarding Fisherman's Horizon butchers the Esthar Warrior party that killed our Bangaa Gladiators, but two more Esthar Warrior parties move into position to attack Fisherman's Horizon. Since a majority of the citizens consider themselves to be subjects of the Tycoon Kingdom (2 to 1), it is our duty to protect them!
Fisherman's Horizon completes construction of its Shrine in 1318 PA and begins building a Temple. During what will be known as the Second Battle of Fisherman's Horizon, a regular Velociraptor party and a regular Knight party massacre both attacking Esthar Warrior parties. A veteran Minotaur destroys the Fiend den between Esthar and Fisherman's Horizon while in the far North, our Bangaa Gladiator party finally wipes out the Fiend Den that spawned at least half the Troll bands that attacked us during the war. These would be the last major combat actions in the Two Front War.
More importantly:
Tower of Worus completes the Dwarf Engineer's Guild, and its production now rivals that of Tycoon Castle. The town begins training a Velociraptor party. In the Southeast, Lonka's sphere of influence expands again, and another Fiend den is spotted between Tycoon Castle and Lonka.
Another Settler party has gathered at the Palace in Tycoon Castle, and they are sent to claim a nice spot to the Northwest of Tower of Worus. The site in question is along the Southern coast of the Wutai sea and is between two herds of Cattle and next to a freshwater lake. Plans have been drafted to build a Canal through the town to connect the lake to the Wutai Sea so that our Naval vessels can take refuge in the lake during bad storms or to escape pursuit by enemy vessels.
Chief Advisor Takayama hires extra workers to speed up construction on the Town Hall in Istory and the Barracks in Jacole.
Later that year, Commander Cloud Strife of AVALANCHE meets with Queen Reina and informs her that since our Military Alliance against Esthar has expired, he has no wish to extend it, and Queen Reina graciously aggrees... We were planning on ending this war soon anyways. We do, however, sell them the secrets of how to run a Republic along with our World Map for their World Map.
The year 1324 marks the end of the Two Front War when Ritz Malheur, the Foreign Advisor, brokers a peace treaty with President Laguna Loire of Esthar. No damages are to be paid by either side and we are allowed to keep the territory we conquered. Peace, with the exception of the ever-present threat of Fiend attacks, has returned to the Kingdom of Tycoon once again.
In other diplomatic news, we trade Territory maps with Commander Squall Leonhart of Garden, and find that despite us having a road linking us to their town of Timber, they don't have any roads going from Balamb to Timber and so we still cannot trade with them. Since we have a Right of Passage agreement with them, Chief Advisor Takayma considers sending a Villager party into their territory to help build up their infrastructure a bit, but we still have a lot of work to do on OUR infrastructure.
Ritz also notices that the Shinra Corporation has finally entered the Age of Chivalry (middle ages), so she meets with President Rufus Shinra, and it turns out that they have discovered Monotheism before anyone else did (Shinra Corporation is scientific, if you might recall, ant Monotheism was the free tech they got for aging up). Ritz quickly trades Feudalism to them for Monarchy and Cid begins researching a code of Chivalry (so we can build Lord Mi'ihen's Crusaders).
Jacole finishes construction of its Barracks in record time and begins building a Town Hall. Istory finishes building its Town Hall and begins recruiting a Villager party (we MUST get those spices hooked up!), while Chief Advisor Takayama spends more Gil to hurry construction of the Temple in Fisherman's Horizon.
A Bangaa Gladiator party annihilates the Fiend Den Southwest of Lonka and are promoted to veteran status for their bravery. They are then attacked by a second pack of Bandersnatches that had left the den shortly before. After a short battle that sees the giant wolves skewered on the lizard-men's spears, the Bangaa Gladiators are promoted to elite status.
So it is with the long, bloody war finally over and the Kingdom of Tycoon entering a new era of peace and prosperity that this chapter ends.
