Well, the next installment of the final fantasy series is due out in North America October 31st. Only one of six games to get a perfect 40/40 score from Famitsu, as well as getting near perfect scores from every other source that has played the japanese version (which is already out). I'll get the thread started with the IGN review found here.

I'm totally through with Japanese RPGs. There, I said it. What was once my favorite game genre has been spoiled by a rush of PS2 sequels that tack on a 3, 4 or 5 but keep the same tired battle system, tired storyline and tired presentation of predecessors. Hey look! I just selected a fire spell from a menu that has options for attack, magic and items, and now that guy is casting a fire spell! And he's shouting out a cool catch phrase too! That's never been done before!

Surprisingly, the Japanese RPG with the largest number of them all is the one to do away with many conventions of the genre. From the moment you start play, to at least the six hour mark (that's where I had to stop playing in order to write up these impressions) Final Fantasy XII offers an RPG experience like never before.

The biggest changes FFXII brings to the RPG world, and the FF series itself for that matter, should already be familiar with gamers based in America (well, the ones who were smart enough to pick up Dragon Quest VIII and its FFXII demo, that is). Random battles and distant overhead views are a thing of the past with FFXII, as we've detailed in past previews. You're now thrown right into the action, with full camera control via the right analogue stick and without the awkward transitions to a virtual battle world separate from the main field of play.

The battle system, while a departure from the static menu-based fare of the past, is easy to figure out in the final build of FFXII. The game holds your hand as you start playing, explaining a few basic concepts through a short tutorial section, then letting you get used to the new system first by fighting alone, then by gradually building up a party. You can slow down or speed up the pace of battles (in our new videos, the speed is set to highest) and switch between active and passive modes. Passive mode pauses the action when you bring up your battle command menu.

Micromanaging each character in your party with individual commands probably wouldn't fit too well with FFXII's battle system, but thanks to the "Gambit" system, you won't have to. This powerful AI system lets you assign custom AI routines to each character in your party.

Each AI routine is referred to as a Gambit. A Gambit consists of an action and a target for that action. Actions can make a character use particular items, attacks, magic spells or skills. Targets can be set as enemies or party members and can even be specified with usage conditions. It's possible to set up a Gambit to make a character use a heal potion (the action) only on party members whose life has gone down by 70% (the target). You can also make a character attack (the action) the enemy that's currently engaged with the party leader (the target).

The power of the Gambit system grows along with your characters. As you learn new spells and skills, you gain new actions that can be selected for a Gambit. New target types can be acquired at a Gambit shop in town. You can even increase the number of Gambits held by a character. These can then be ordered, resulting in priority for certain actions. For instance, you can make a character first attack the enemy currently engaging the party leader, then attack the nearest enemy. Each Gambit can be toggled on and off individually from the main menu.

One cool feature of the Gambit system is that you can make even the party leader run under Gambit control. This leaves much of the dirty work of battle up to the AI, allowing you to view overall strategy and select specific actions every now and then.

The Gambit and battle systems offer a refreshing experience for the jaded Japanese RPG gamer, but FFXII goes much further in its attempts at twisting all the old formulas. Enemies don't leave behind gold anymore! You can find gold in treasure chests here and there, but the real way to get cash is to collect treasures, sometimes in treasure chests, sometimes being carried by enemies, and sell them at shops. This system has worked well over the first few hours of the game, and it has the benefit of actually making sense as opposed to having all these monsters running around with bags of gold

awesome, just awesome, I'm still looking for a FF game to match my love for FFVII

I only have time to glance at the link but does it mention what consoles it'll come out for? or is it all? I've just bought a 360 so that'd be sweet if I could get it for that

What no random battles? the game phails

Playstation 2 only.

So, GameStop/EB Games have an exlusive deal with Sony to carry a special edition package for 59.99 USD. But, I would advise making a reservation on this game, it will be gone in a heartbeat.

I really really hope I dont have to choose between FFXII and Zelda: Twilight Princess.

that sucks it's not coming out on the 360 but I suppose now that Sony have lost out on their exclusivity on the GTA series they need something to hold onto :( guess this is ANOTHER reason to keep my PS2 heh

Xbox 360 didn't sell well in japan. hence why there only ffxi for 360. Sony still has the FF series.
FF13 and ff vs 13 ps3 only.

GTA is not that great anyways.

FFXII is being made by square enix not sony btw. So with this collectors edition thats up to square enix to allow it.

Poor Nintendo gets...Crystral Chronicles, yippee.

The 360 did horrible overseas, so there is no real reason for Square Enix to make it for the 360.

It's obvious FF12 will be good. The FF games follow a patteren

3 games per system, first and second are good the middle game is "meh".

FF1 NES, GOOD
FF2 NES, NOT SO GOOD
FF3 NES, GOOD

FF4 SNES, GOOD
FF5 SNES, NOT SO GOOD
FF6 SNES, GOOD

FF7 PSX, GOOD
FF8 PSX, NOT SO GOOD
FF9 PSX, GOOD

FF10 PS2, GOOD
FF11 PS2, NOT SO GOOD
FF12 PS2, WILL BE GOOD!

pattern does not inovles games outside the standard number series such as FF:MQ, FF:Tactics, FFX-2, etc...

FF2 American or Japanese? I rather liked that one, Cecil is one of my favorite lead characters in a videogame. Not bad for the NES era.

Oh, and disliking FF8 is more of an opinion than a concrete fact like disliking Superman 64 ;) The only thing I disliked was constantly having to see those summons, no way to shorten it (I would have shortened the sequences even at the sacrifice of less boosting time...).

I agree though, this game is going to rock :D I dont know much about the characters, but it will be fun learning about them on my own.

FF11 is the 2nd most popular MMORPG out their, World of Warcraft is the only one that manages to beat it ;).

I've tried my best not to read anything about the characters or storyline, don't want to ruin anything before I actually get to play. I want to find it all out when I'm playing the game.

Popular does not = good. Some of the grindfest korean made MMOS have climbed to top spots now and again and those are they have been just plain.. painful. I haven't heard many happy stories from FF11 players, current or ex. That may just be because i've only heard american ones, I understand the game is quite japanese dominated.

Then again you tend to get so attached to MMOs it's hard to quit even if you recognize the one you are playing is no longer fun.

FF2 japanese obviously. FF4 (2 USA) the one with cecil, was for the SNES/Super Famicom, not the NES. Of course games being good/bad is all a matter of opinion. As with many things of it's nature the "FF pattern" i posted is of course for "Entertainment Purposes Only".

I'll be perfectly honest though, even though I know FF12 will be good, I'm looking forward to Valkyrie Profile 2 far more.

Important games:
1. Spore
2. Final Fantasy XII

Final Fantasy is my favorite game series ever. FFVII is my favorite, and FFIV/II is my second favorite. Cecil is sweet.

doh, FFIV was Super Nintendo...I was mixing it up with the original FFII.

I've played the game for almost 2 years now and the large majority of players are American. Unless you get on during Japanese prime time (which is about noon here in america), you won't see anyone speaking a foreign language (unless you want to say canadians speak a foreign language ;)).

FFXI is a grindfest, because it's not built for you two level up to 75 in a month. People tend to think that it's like WoW, where they can max their character out in two weeks. If you don't bother with leveling to much, and start with all the extras ( Ballista, Tremer, BCNM, ENM, Assault, Besieged, Garrison, Sky, Dynamis, Merit Points, Chocobo Racing, etc.) then your have plenty of fun with it.

Well, you're the first player i've heard saying (outside of something like an FF fansite of course) anything nice about the game. I've never played so of course I'm not saying things based on exprience. However the testimonials i've heard are fairly slanted in one direction.

Look at all the major MMORPG watchers (IE: www.mmorpg.com). Your find that FFXI usually ranks within the type 5 of greatest MMO's out there and if it doesn't make it in the top 5.. it always makes it in the top 10.
