There has been 2 reviews of FFXII two Japanese mags
famitsu(japanese mag) gave it a Perfect score :D (the first perfect score of FF and only the 6th of the mag) 10/10/10/10 (40/40)
Dengeki (i think another japan mag) gave it a 90/90/95/90 = 365/400

I watched that 10 minute video... looks very good for a PS2 game.

I heard there is no more random encounter on the world map and that the monsters actually appear on the map for you to chase, which is really good. Random encounter is the most tedious thing in previous FF games.

Though I haven't touched my PS2 in more than a year, I might check it out... :)

PS Though I have no idea if my machine still runs... :ack:

FFXII is looking like the best contender to knock FFVII out of it's spot.

Also, remember that this game has been in development for almost 6 years. Hell, they had it playable at E3 2 years ago.

They've had a long time to perfect every aspect of this game. In this regard, SE has really earned my respect. They could have easiler just released a pile of crap, and made a ton of money just from the Final Fantasy name.

Count in that they still have Alexander Smith doing the Japanese to english translation, and I can't wait for this game.

His Vagrant Story localization has been widely praised, and it has the extremely rare distinction of being considered by some to be technically superior to the original Japanese script it is based upon. Where Vagrant Story's Japanese script was straightforward, Smith added a great deal of flavor to his translation by way of various anachronistic English idioms and slang.

lol, FFX was far inferior to the PS1 FF's in my opinion...

but after playing the FFXII demo, Im gonna give this one a shot. Its sorta like Grandia and Parasite Eve battle systems put together...

sure, but that doesnt mean it wasnt far inferior to PS1 FF's :p

IGN gave it a 9.1/10, and the review was written by a guy who starts off, and ends with, "I hate japanese RPGs."

Also from IGN:

March 16, 2006 - Final Fantasy XII hit Japanese game shops on Thursday, with over two million copies shipped on the first day. Square Enix president Yoichi Wada announced the expected shipment figure at a launch countdown that took place at 6:45 AM Thursday morning at the well-known Tsutaya media/lifestyle outlet in Tokyo's Shibuya ward.

That's fine and all if you're Japanese (or non-Japanese Japanese correspondents), but when will English speaking audiences get to enjoy this latest Final Fantasy? FFXII executive producer Akitoshi Kawazu, also in attendance at the countdown, mentioned that Square Enix is working toward a North American release in time for Thanksgiving. A European release will follow.

So rest assured, international Final Fantasy fans! The long-awaited next numbered entry in Square Enix's biggest global series will be in your hands before the year is out.

thanks for posting the review.

well i known it for a while that ign.com reviews are baised and that will affect the scores however a 9+ is pretty good.

Two million copies shipped on the first day? That's very impressive! Did previous Final Fantasy games sell as well?

Strider, what's the link to the IGN review?

I think those 2 million sold on the first day also.

Anyway, here is the IGN review and a quote from it:

I'm totally through with Japanese RPGs. There, I said it. What was once my favorite game genre has been spoiled by a rush of PS2 sequels that tack on a 3, 4 or 5 but keep the same tired battle system, tired storyline and tired presentation of predecessors. Hey look! I just selected a fire spell from a menu that has options for attack, magic and items, and now that guy is casting a fire spell! And he's shouting out a cool catch phrase too! That's never been done before!

Surprisingly, the Japanese RPG with the largest number of them all is the one to do away with many conventions of the genre. From the moment you start play, to at least the six hour mark (that's where I had to stop playing in order to write up these impressions) Final Fantasy XII offers an RPG experience like never before.

IGN didn't review the game yet. I think the 9.1 you saw is the reader rating score, which generally doesn't mean much.

It did, however, receive a 40/40 from Famitsu, a score that very few games ever receive. Then again, they did give a perfect score to Nintendogs... so I still wouldn't put too much faith into it.

A while back I said that I'd buy a PS2 just for FF12 after I saw a great trailer for it. I might have to take back that statement now. The removal of random battles is a huge plus, but the battle system they have replacing it... doesn't look so good either. I'll wait and see how things turn out.
