ok well, finnally got a lot of good enjoyment out of a game and had a damn good time ... obviously im doing something wrong still ... but im getting there

last game i built up a large empire and was internally ripped appart by a civil war due to a cronic approval rating (i kinda thought this was cool, even though that was the end of my empire)

this game i was backstabbed by a couple of neibours, when i kinda sorta had no navy ..... well damn, i couldnt keep up the colony ships like the ai ... and was making that vital land grab .... by the time i started to make some ships (and they REALLY kicked arse) but i just didnt have enough of them to hold back the hordes
and damn it .... i had them tecked and had just started to pump out some really tough ships ... now that i put it like that makes me think they were cool with me having no navy (i was happy to trade anything and cave at any demand) .... mebey it was those damn spies
im finding it hard to get a ballence and finding what works, but im having a ball trying to find the way to run an empire

oh yea .... wanna share some other stories of having fun while failing?

I'm currently in the process of deciding whether or not I'm going to get the game. I've been mulling over their website and reading almost all the threads in their forums as well as this one. I think I'm going to get. Just seems too cool to pass up. Anyway, I had a few questions for you.

In your post, you mentioned that you didn't have a navy. I'm curious as to why. Was this after some great battle and you took heavy casualities? I'm assuming that your civil war also interrupted your production rate. How severe is something like that?

Also, on the GC2 website they have game examples (which are a great read by the way). It seems that a prevailing strategy amongst the examples is building two types of ships at once. One smaller, less expensive ship to mass produce and then larger more expensive ships to do the heavy lifting. Is this really how the game goes? Sort of our version of Infantry and Tanks in Civ4? I only ask because when you said that you didn't have a navy, it really threw me.

He didn't have a navy because you typically don't in the very early game. You need to buy colonizers, scouts, and constructors to stake your claim. The trick is to know when you've grabbed enough and need to start protecting what you claimed. (The minute someone researches Planetary Invasions is a good time to get real serious about defense).

Hmmm...so I'm assuming that such things are announced like in Civ4? For example, like when a Great Wonder is built and you get the message "The Great Pyramids have been built in a far away land." Or is there another way in which you know that someone has researched "Planetary Invasions?"

I'm also very curious about the civil war aspect. Have you had any experience with this like Selous did?

yea, me not having a navy was my fault .... got a little to greedy with the techs

oh yea .... the civil war really buggered me big time, but i really did deserve it

i guess my message is the fun in the game is in the journey, not nessesary the finish line
yea ovidian, buy the game if you like to be sucked into a game after a bit, if you are willing to put up with a little bit of waiting and testing, i say the rewards are worth the effort by far.
if you really like civ ... then chances are you will really like this

oh yea ... all i can add to that is you goto learn when to make the switch ..... i havnt yet :(

A navy? In space?

How else would you describe it? You have space SHIPS, therefore it would be logical that it would be called a Navy.

Was this a serious question (if so ignore the rest of the sentence), or are you just trying to be sarcastic and get a rise out of someone? (it's not the first time I have seen you do this...)

The AI will pick on you if it deems you weak. Having no defenses, well you asked for it is all I can say.

There are super projects that are announced, trade goods too.. "So and so has built Ultra Spices thereby establishing a monopoly on the good.. blah blah" or "Galactic Wonder created so and so built it and no more can be built " type of message. Click ok and go on. If you don't like seeing them can turn off the notifications.

I would say if you like strategy games you'll like GC2. :king:

Yeah, navy seems weird. I'd use fleet (of course, fleet could be a subset of your military). And, of course, fleet is used in the navy. Squadron? Air Force? I've never heard "navy" used in any sci-fi show or movie.

And yeah, I'm usually sarcastic, anyway :)

Hate to burst your bubble, but the vast majority of fictional works (books, movies, TV Shows etc) attribute spaceborn ships as properly being the pervue of the Navy.

You've never seen any of the Star Wars movies? Imperial Navy anyone? None of the Aliens movies? (Who do you think Marines catch rides from?) Never watched any Babylon 5?

Never watched Star Trek even?? Or do you think Admirals, Petty Officers and Yeomen are crew ranks of those who serve aboard NCC 1701(a-z) as members of the Air Force?

By the way, know what the "NCC" plastered on every Star Trek ship stands for? I'm feeling generous so you get 3 guesses at what that N in NCC represents... :crazyeye:

Edit: Oh, forgot :p Back to topic: The AI will pounce quickly if you're weak, watch for them to start making demands as a sure tip-off that it's time to ramp up your defense. They'll also come after you on moral grounds tho - and this one was a big surprise when it first happened to me. If one of the "good" races are in the game and you choose the Evil answer too often when presented with moral dilemmas, eventually they'll feel it is their duty to come after you and remove your wicked butt from the universe. :p

Yeah, it works the other way around too. If you're good, the evil races will come knocking on your door. But a good army/navy/air force will help in all every case :D

Honestly, not much of that rings a bell. Never knew what NCC stood for. Admirals makes sense, but I don't have a clue what Petty Officers or Yeoman really are.

AFAIK, at least in the US, Marines aren't in the navy, either.

Imperial Navy? Let me google it...yeah, it shows up a few times, but I'm more familiar with just the use of "Imperial".

They're Navy enlisted ratings.

Now it's a separate branch, much like the US Air Force began as a branch of the Army... but Marines as far back as the beginning of naval warfare have always been naval combat forces, and continue to be naval combat forces to this day. (Yes even in the US Marines)

Suffice to say there are _far_ more references to space combat units being members of a Navy than there are references to being any other kind of organization.

The single most sure fire way to piss off a marine, is to remind them their checks are signed from the Dept. of Navy. Will offer that from personal experience.

They are a seperate branch, but they catch rides and often times work side by side.

Another example of space navy, those old wing commander games.

it just seemed that AI attacked after i started to build ships (and i was a good source of techs for them) .... i was thinking that they might have been quite happy letting me live with NO forces, or of course i was asking for it

yea dude, if you love your strat games, ya going to love this one, its pretty deep

well i thought "navy" was the best term, what else would/could you call it?

so has anyone else had a civil war?

What do you have to do in order to get a civil war? I've never had one, I try to keep my approval above 70%.

i had close to a dozen star systems and 0% approval ... for quite some time ... just pumping out starships to fight off the hordes
