Finally, Marines are useful!

I was playing Monarch, Huge Map, and preparing to land on China and Russia's continent very late in the game with all tech discovered and I was building Integrated Defense. I was Egypt, ahead on points but behind in Military. I had 2 Transports of 8 Marines and 4 Transports of MA 1 move (NOT 1 square) ready to land and take the first city. They were supported by a complete Navy force ready to bombard the city prior to landing. Then China Nuked two of my cities. Russia also nuked two of my cities. Never saw that before and I normally stayed away from using nukes in the game for "moral" reasons. In anger I launched a Tactical Nuke (I still built them because they are in the game!) at the city I was planning to take. The city was immediately reduced to 1 MI with only 1 hit point. I moved in 1 Marine transport and took the city with 1 Marine! NO losses! On the same turn I was able to take 3 other coastal cities with the 1 Nuke, 1 Marine combo. I sacked 3 of them, kept one, moved in the MA and since it was now MY city I was able to attack yet another non-coast city on the same turn with the MA since I could unload and then move the MA. I even still had all the bombardment off the coast to soften up the non-coast city.

An ugly way to make war but very effective. I will ONLY use this technique if I am Nuked first!

I tought marines coulnt attack cities from the sea...

Oh man - you think I would have noticed that battle going on, my office looks right out over Boston's inner harbor! I must be workin' too hard.

On a related note, I suppose one could use paratroopers in a similar way: When the AI goes to attack your newly-captured city, wait a few turns than drop paratroopers in somewhere far, far away on the other end of the continent. Break up a bunch of roads with bombers.

Then ideally your paratroopers should attack a now-fairly defenseless city. The AI shouldn't be able to counterattack quickly.

I'll have to try this sometime soon.

Neato idea! I have noticed that the AI goes for mass rush in taking over a city. I'll have to try that, though I am not a fan of paratroopers...yet.

How many marines did you lose when attacking? I think a lot! Marines are pretty weak units and I don't know how come they are weaker then infantry.

They're special ops; they can attack from the sea. I guess that is why they're a little weaker than Infantry. But the amphibious assult is one reason why they should be considered. I could have used them when attacking island cities.

marines are not really spec ops. Paratroopers are more the spec ops.

Doesn't anyone tac nuke a coastal city, send in marine, raze, on to next. No losses but for the one. Crazy to attack fortified mech in a city unless it was bombed to death.

Why not just mod the mechs so that they can attack from a transport? After all most mechs are amphibious.

I've won more wars than I should've with Marines. Especially the last game I was in. I destroyed 3 civ's capital cities and their spaceships thanks to Marines, so they can be very helpful, but I don't keep them there for too long..only as long as it takes for me to fortify other units there.

So I try to build and maintain a platoon of marines(about 25-30) just for coastal invasions. So it's worth the time and cash to queue up the Marines :)
