Historical pairing leader with civ could be immersive, but is bad for gameplay. I haven't unlocked any additional civs, so I was stuck between Hawaii and Inca as my choice, neither of them were good fit.
Influence overflow on peaceful play even if don't prioritize it at all. In my game many independent powers were hostile and wiped out, I've dispersed 2 and some AIs did the same. I managed to befriend and assimilate one independent power before there were nobody else to befriend. I interacted with AI to max (3 out of 4 were in love with me at the end of the age), but still had unused influence.
Forward settling is a thing. Lafayette settled a town, which could only be accessed from his homeland through either my or Charlemagne's territory.
I managed to beat Greeks (Lafayette) in building Oracle. Didn't do this on purpose, just forgot what it's their and though it's a good wonder to build.
Combat is fun, even against independents. They are not well organized, but could amass significant number of units and those ships going up navigable rivers are nasty.
Adjacency bonuses are hell to manage. I mostly gave up on planning and just pick the spot once I build them. So far it looks like micromanagement hell you may want to dive into if you wish maximum effectiveness for highest difficulty levels.
Managing resources is less micromanagement than adjacency bonuses and overall interesting to do. Especially if you don't try to milk any bit of bonuses out of it.
Gaining land with Urban tiles exploit was fixed. Now urban tiles grab land only once the first building is complete.

Overall impression is very positive. Really fun to play.
