Firaxis: How does the AI compute tech values?

If the AI has a tech to sell (or I have one to sell) - how does the AI decide on a priece?

I know about the following factors:

- basic cost of the tech

- number of civs I have contact with that know the tech

- how close I am to researching the tech myself

What other factors are there? Does it matter if the tech gives me a new form of government? The ability to build a wonder? Does it matter if that wonder has already been built?

I am starting to wonder because of games like this:

I created a map where everyone is one their own little island. Only suicide Galleys will bring contact (it is an MP map). I have already researched Feudalism. As you can see, I am far ahead of the japanese. i ask them what they want for monarchy - and they say they can't sell it to me. I try, and make an offer - they demand all 5 tech I can give them.

Changing my research rate, they offer monarchy for the following:

Obviously, since they know noone, and since I set AI-AI trade to 100% (this is Regent level, btw), the AI values the one tech it know extremely high. This is a bit ridiculous, given that I built the Great Library btw.......

ading up the cost of the techs they ask:

Mathematics: 8
Philosophy: 6
Code of Law: 10
Literature: 10
Map making: 12

Total: 46

given that almost reached the most expensive of these (map Making), the total for the rest is still 34.

monarchy is 24, of which I already researched a bit........

not really in the AIs best interest, I'd say - becasue that way, noone is ever going to trade - or is anyone?????

It's pretty annoying that the AI doesn't propose something. That way you could find a way to meet their demands. And it would make clear if they simply don't want to trade, or that you're not able to.

I think I read that somewhere. If so, multiply the 1.3*34 and you get 44.2, so asking for all the techs is as close as he can come.

I'm curious though. How do you know the values of techs you've already researched? Is there a way to view that?

It sure seems to me they value govt and wonder techs way higher than regular techs as well. I've been stuck in despotism now til 800AD because none of the 7 AI's will give me either Monarchy or Republic.

I don't know about you killer but it usually takes an awful lot of dough and techs to trade for a government, even if it is monarchy. Plus they might want the Hanging Gardens. But whenever i try to trade for communism or democracy, i usually find the offering price waaaaay to high.

Btw, i sold rocketry the other day (i was the only one who had it) to Rome and got free artistry amphib war, advanded flight and 160 gpt. So sometimes, its pretty nice.

billindenver: I took these from the editor.

WildFire444: I also see some outrageous dealks later on - but then they ask as much as they are ready to pay! I mean, if I was behind like the Japs are I'd be happy to get 3 techs for Monarchy - and later in the game I CAN get Communism for 1 or two really big things like Atomic Theory and something else....
