"Fire" Developer Diary

is shadow after fire, or is it the last one after ice??

wow... And I thought that after Master of Magic I would never find another good turn based strategy fantasy game... this isn't good... it's amazing!!!

I love the different strength types idea! IMHO the different physical strength types could be nice, but I agree that it may just over complicate things.

Wow guys.. Totally amazing, is all I can say. Can't wait to see this in action.

I also agree that different phsycial types would be nice, however, since physcial will be the most common. Or should be.

I really like the look of that damage types system - adding multiple types of physical damage and such would probably complicate it needlessly, though.

I would like to suggest one additional damage type, still: Mental.
Damage from possible future illusionary units and the effects of charm and domination spells, fear effects and such would all fall under this one.

that would actually fit in pretty nicely i would imagine

I always missed the defence/offence...
How about something to do with first strike and collateral damage when defending with high/low defence?

Hey! Diary derives from latin DIES, for day--we want one entry a day! ;)

edit: and sorry for asking the obvious, but what's the meaning of the number in the circle attached to the top-left UI element? And why is the UI BROWN?! ;P

The UI is gold because thats my personal setup, its not a "Fire" thing. There is a thread somewhere in this forum for changing your UI from blue to gold.

Next Fridays developer diary will be all about the number in that little circle.

is it possible to have shrines? like say for example a summoning shrine where only the most powerful spellcaster units can summon strong units, or a shrine that 'blesses' all melee unit's attack...

Dwarven chariots with ram teams ... now were talking!

The base damage + magic overlay system sounds like it will go a long long way to "filling in the gaps" between existing unit type appearances on the tech tree. This sounds extremely promising.

One comment though, mostly just from a "flavor" basis. How about replacing (perhaps) Lightning with .... need a good term ... let's call it "kinetic" for now, because I don't want to call it "physical". :) But the idea is to represent spells that do not directly blast the foe with magical energy, they blast the environment and the environmental splatter harms the foe.

I am talking about stuff like summoning a cloud of anvils 50' over the heads of a rank of advancing Macemen, or earth elementalists ripping boulders our of the ground and hurtling them at the enemy. Or your old-fashioned mentalist using telekenesis to fling convieneintly placed basketfulls of darts, or you air elementalist calling up dust devils and flying stones, etc.

Then you could have a "kinetic" (smallish damage/little resistance mitigation) and "energy" ((fireballs/lightning) bigish damage/large resistance mitigation)

That construct might give your "flavor designers" a bit more flexibility. (Or not. :) I gotta find 2 cents to chip in. The approach sounds great.

Hmm... I'd imagine those kinds of spells would just do physical damage - I mean, what difference does it make if someone launches an anvil at you with magic, as opposed to a anvil-throwing mechanical device or just plain old brute force?

Just wondering, if the only currant problem is with reloading, can you get a demo-type version of "Fire" to download? I can't wait to see all the new stuff!

Oh, there's more holding up public release than one or two game stopping bugs. Not every thing is implemented, or even necesarily decided upon, at least in the bare bones needed for wider testing.

Please tell me that number is mana, which will now be a resource, that you use every time you cast a spell or build a ritual.. please please please!!

Well, I was inspired by thinking along the lines of "earth-based damage". But I suppose you are right. :)
