"Fire" Developer Diary

Hence my love of Kael and team for introducing Lightning as an element to be reckoned with.

As I see it, Weather is nigh impossible to implement - however this is not to say that certain spells could not emulate weather at its worst? What would a huricane look like in civ? I do only hope that at it's center would be a small 8-bit figure with a top hat, umbrella and monocle.

Mr. Peanut?

I'll be your bad neighbor woodelf.

I'll come over, asking for sugar, spill it on your couch - flip through your television channels (without your premission, while you were trying to record a program you like) - then I'll root through your medicine cabinet and steal your nacho cheese doritos while singing in your shower - mind you, I'll use your bathrobe and towel.

I promise to sing loudly.

My only question is: why does woodelf keep his nacho cheese doritos in his medicine cabinet?

AND YAY! Feb 16th :D

If you can find some nacho cheese doritoes which don't have enough artificial ingredients and preservatives in them to count as medicine, then I'll be impressed.

This all looks very exciting guys - looking forward to finding out about the ol' armageddon counter next week :)

Exceedingly, exceedingly cool. That'll get me playing Civ again.

(Now to skim the thread.)

Hyborem most likely won't be your immediate neighbor unless you found the Veil and in that case once you open Pandora's Box you get what you deserve. ;)

I think we need more bad neighbors personally.

My point is, I might want to play Sheiam with Ashen Veil. So either I have to wait till someone founds Ashen Veil (and no one that doesn't want to be the Infernals is going to want to, unless its an AI thats too stupid to know better) or do it and deal with Hyborem raping my empire, like I said. The Ashen Veil is one of the weaker religions, there isnt that much incentive to found it if you want to stick with the civ you started with.

I'd rather just be able to turn it off.

QES - Here I am, rock you like a hurricane.

If there is a hurricane spell, that should be the civopedia entry :D

most promotions given through magic will give +str or what?
enchanted weapons+1 physical?
divine hammer spell thingy+1 holy?

Either way Hyborem gets the Ashen Veil in all of his cities automatically and, if he is AI controlled, has good relations with fellow Ashen Veil civs.
Personally, if I was doing pretty poorly, I might welcome the chance to re-start in the middle of the game :) It sounds like in some cases you'll be summoning a pretty strong ally (after all he starts out with good relations with you). If it's really a problem, the code could always be altered to start the Infernals at a random tile, or perhaps only in response to a cheap ritual.

Knight - Could any other than Mr Peanut be at the center of such choas? He who has weathered other tasty inventions and still remains the supreame ruler of munchy snacks? I beg you to find another whom could be as powerful.

And I dont know why woodelf keeps the nachocheese doritos in the medicine cabinet, I just know that one does not look a theft horse in the mouth.

EDIT: Quetz - Not bad for a civpedia entry, but I think there must be something out there that has that errie sense of the "calm before the storm."

Maybe this question has been asked before already, but I've a curiosity on cold damage - how much different is it going to be from "phsyical Damage" of the same amount?

It strikes me that Cold - Rarly Encountered, Rarly Resisted, is almost identical to pure strength which is Always encountered, Never resisted.

I did the following made up chart to give example:
Spoiler :

From these ficticious units we can see that pure physical strength, equal in total to additions from cold - really wouldnt impact the game much.

(Ice Lizzard) 2 + 3 Cold (Few Units Have, Few Resist/Vulnerable)

(Ghoul) 2 + 3 Death (Some Have, Unliving Immune)

(Pyromancer) 2 + 3 Fire (Many Have, Many Resist/Vulernable)

(Cleric) 2 + 1 Holy (Some Have, Many Vulerable, Few Resist)

(Stormdancer) 2 + 1 Lightning (Some Have, Some Resist/Vulerable)

(Rouge) 2 + 1 Poison (Some Have, Unliving Immune)

(Witch) 2 + 5 Unholy (Some Have, Many Resist, Few Vulnerable)

(Rubber Golem) 5 (Most all have, None Resist, None Vulernable)

Will there be some creatures that have resistances or vulnerabilities to basic strength? - I think that's a good idea. But if not, then what is the advantage of a cold based strength as opposed to a just inherant strength?

Just curious,

EDIT: I had an idea if you're looking for one.

Lightning already takes the role of the "less encountered, less resisted/vulerables" to fire. Why not give cold some extra ability - but put it on par with bonuses with that of Lightning. Perhaps when struck with cold damage - a movement point is lost - which can slow speedy units, and even stop the slowest in their tracks (for one and only one turn of course). This little enhancement would give it a purpose that general strength could not acheive, and would vindicate units for being resistant to it. Perhaps resistant units not only deal with less damage, but perhaps they also are immune to the cold effect as well.

I should note, that this effect of cold wouldnt impact the game drastically, unless the affected unit survived, as a result of the cold enchanted unit dying anyway - or of hit and run withdrawl tactics.

Hm, you want ashen, but not Hyborem.

It's not said that it's garunteed that he'll attack your civilization is it?
There was another post somewhere, talking of the armeggedon counter, and when angels arive destroying hethan cities - why not program Hyborem to do something similar. You can switch to him, or let him go rampaging Other's cities. I mean, perhaps there should be a chance that Hyborem turns on his creator/master - but shouldnt he be MORE likely to attack someone else? Perhaps weaker? Perhaps any eventual betrayal should only happen after Hyborem has set him self up with at least a city or two.

mm, I just assumed he would attack whoever is closest, which is likely to be the one who summoned him..

I was also expecting fire in march at earliest. I like all new things so far, I think my computer wouldn't handle 2 maps anyway.

You have to remember that it's more a beta relase(but a public one) than an official relase. Like Sez said, there won't be a lot of new art and the new features will be in a testing phase. We will probably officialy realse it (When I say officilay I mean with some Fireworks) later.
