"Fire" Developer Diary

Maybe this question has been asked before already, but I've a curiosity on cold damage - how much different is it going to be from "phsyical Damage" of the same amount?

It strikes me that Cold - Rarly Encountered, Rarly Resisted, is almost identical to pure strength which is Always encountered, Never resisted.
If you want a wild guess, some units (such as fire units) could have negative cold resistance, thus making them more vulnerable to cold damage.

Cold is very rarely used, one hero has some and water summons have a small amount. Having some cold strength means if they enter into a smoking tile (the effect that precceds a forest fire) the smoke will go out.

Outside of that its hardly used in this phase. But we aren't building systems just for this phase, this is only step 2 of a four part process.

If anyone had to make a guess when cold would be expanded upon, it would probably be during "Ice." Shouldn't later Illian units get to deal some cold damage though? Mulcarn is supposed to be getting stronger during the Age of Rebirth right? Or are you already doing that?

Ah, thank you my good sir. That makes quite a bit of sense.

I would imagine that Doveillo units will get some cold damage somewhere... somehow...

And what about Chaos damage? Could be a type of "physical" booster. Like a bonus to STR that isnt really STR. Sounds like something that Perpentach would have.

Are there any plans to make the civ leaders into units? I would love to have Perpentach running around, or Alexis, or Kandros Fir, etc. (Like Basium and Hyborem) Could be a type of regicide victory like how they did it in civ3.

Are there plans to make units suffer could damage as long as they are on ice tiles?

This would greatly help to make polar regions more hostile, while beeing a different mechanic than that for deserts. It would also work well with doviello, auric ulivns and undad units (as i guess they have some cold invularabiltiy (sp?) or ressistances).

This was suggested about deserts too, but ended up just being a str penalty because the AI already knows how to avoid those tiles, while it might not for damaging tiles.

who knows till you try though.. i think ice woudl make more sense than deserts, note there are plenty of people living in the middle east, but none in antarctica

8 million people live in the actual desert or oasi?

In the entire Sahara, an area roughly the size of the United States but with considerably less starbucks (though I dont know if thats proof of our advancement or theirs).

New entry added in the first post. Not a big thing (I'll save the big stuff for Fridays), just a wonder that I've enjoyed playing with.

It seems my question got lost in the tides of new posts.

Are fires going to be animated, and if so, will it be possible to turn off the animation in a checkbox or the like?

I like the sound of the new wonder, it also worth noting that there are a further two new wonders listed on the Civpedia page.

Rather than spoil the release with more details, how many new wonders are there?

Cheers

Yes they are animated, it isn't possible to provide a checkbox to turn them off (we dont have any control over the graphics engine). But if it does end up being a problem someone can always provide a different nif that isnt animated, so a new file or patch to install.
