Hi,

I am on my first Regent game after winning on Warlord. I'm wondering what I am doing wrong, if anything.

I have the following problems:
My territory is a good size, average compared to computer civs. my military is not bad, but I'm behind all other civs in tech.

It is 430 AD, I'm still researching construction, others have got Literature, Polytheism, Construction etc way ahead of me.. although they dont seem to be out of the ancient times yet..

Also, they ask for exorbitant prices for tech, like all my gold, plus all my gold per turn for a single tech.

Is this normal for this stage of the game or have I done something wrong?

Also, now I have war against the Iroquois tot he south and Americans tot he north.. although I have 2 allies so its not too bad.

Hello Brian,

I am on my second Regent game. I spent a thousand years at war producing nothing but Bowmen in all my cities, occasionaly stopping to produce barracks if they could do it fast enough. Those bowmen are worth double their weight in gold. I spent my entire [early] Golden Age at war because of the Bowmen

The only wonder I got was the Collossus because I got a great leader and switched Babylon to it because it was the only one left. (hated to forego that bowman for a turn)

I got (somewhat) caught up in techs by selling my territory map after the Germans had been wiped out and I owned my fair-sized continent. My science advisor won't look me in the eye anymore-- he's so ashamed of us.

I sold introductions, anything just to see what I could get.

I won't win this game but I have more confidence in what I can do than I did before. My win on regent was a cultural win because I was alone on my small(ish) continent and the others were at war all the time. I found two more Small islands for expansion but I was at half their number.

I had thousands of years of peace and cultural improvements - all the wonders but one but no resources to back up my modern techs.

It seems to depend on what you are given in the first deal. I do start over if I get placed on desert or jungle. I can't fight the elements and the other civs.

You might try selling your territory map and see "What they will offer for it" As they say here, sell it to everyone on the same turn. Have your harbours and roads in place -- luxuries can get you techs as well.

I think it helps to have a strong UU at the beginning. My Bab bowmen and the Iroquios mounted warrior can do wonders (boo, hiss, pun) for those feisty neighbours. As we get better at the level, I think we could switch to a civ with a later UU, but to start, the game is won or lost by defending and defeating. You have to be alive into the next turn to progress.

It's all about learning and adapting to what you get. I ain't there yet but I progress.

Good strategy for Regent:

1. play commercial civ (to get alphabet) - Greeks are best as they are scientific to boot and hoplites good during early war),

2. research Writing and the Literature at 1 beaker of science (generally 10%, or even better just make one scientist somewhere and go 100% tax) so you will get them before anyone else does and have boatloads of money.

3. use money to create embassies (makes AI much nicer to you) and also to buy allies just in case you are attacked. DO NOT BUY TECH! you will get caught up right away once the GL is built. (plus nice culture). I generally get 8 techs on completion of GL.

4. once you build GL, maintain 1 beaker science and research direct path to Republic.

5 Switch to Republic, push science to 90% and then become tech broker for the rest of the game (sell your tech to those who will pay good money for it, you will keep an edge of like 4-5 techs over everyone else). I am generally making 500+ gold per turn by the time the game is ending, almost all of that money is from other civs.

Thanks for the tips!

I'm playing the greeks, but didnt head straight for Literature. Someone else got it way earlier than me and built the GL..

Next game I'll try that!

Thats whats nice about this game, you get to learn new strategies at each level becasue the AI gets smarter and more aggressive..
