Title :p Read it :p

Usually when I'm a non warmonger, I try to build a temple first. no matter what age. For the culture :)
But, if I'm warmongering, I build walls and the cheapest defensive unit :D

What about you? I'm trying a new strat for this and need some ideas

Is this the first city or one way late in the game or what?

well, let's say in Modern Times.
You have any building you want. No wonders that have automaticly build one.
Well, let's say for any era

Often the cheapest cultural building I can find, then.

Early on probably a worker. Midgame, courthouses most likely. Late game I would rush build temple/library if I needed domination victory.

since i usually play religious civs temple is most common. its extremely difficult to catch up in culture once you fall behind because of the thousand year rule.

That really depends which civ I am playing.... If I am the Germans or Zulu's I often build barracks first, a warrior (to explore, in force) then a spearman, then a worker then a settler.. followed by a spearman, a settler and the best offensive unit available.. Then it's a mad dash to culture, or wonders..

If it's the Americans or English.. I tend to forgo the barracks, go with two settlers, two spearman, and temples.. then the greatest need based on the map I end up on (usually random)

Well, a warrior if there was no guard for the settler or I'm settling near the enemy (AI or barbarians). Otherwise, I build according to my needs...it's usually a worker first thing, though.

Always scout for expanisionist or warrior/other unique unit for non-expansionist. ALWAYS. it's the golden rule for civ 3.

Well, generally agree, but I will occasionally build a curragh first on an archipelago world.

Early game it's a tossup between a worker and a warrior. Generally a worker since the earlier you get them out the more they can do for your empire. Later on in the game, around Chivalry or so I crank out all offensive units, with my slower producing cities building Spearmen. Maybe even throw in a few Catapults or Trebuchet depending on my tech situation. After that my game is usually won so I build whatever I want.

Generally, I go temple, then courthouse. If I'm scientific, I might do a library instead of a temple, particularly if I've got sufficient luxuries and roads that I don't need the temple. The important thing is to have that first building be a cultural building. As for defensive units, I bring those with me as part of the invasion force. Rarely will cities on a front build military units.

Much depends on the civ traits and surrounding terrain of course. Generally though, first I build a scout or warrior to explore, second priority is a quick settler if possible. If not, I go for a warrior/spearman to defend and then the settler. Third is the barrracks because I hate being surprised and last is the granary to speed up growth.

I dont usually play conquest type games, but I do prefer having a strong military even early in the game, so barracks are usually a priority over temples, granaries, and libraries.

If the city is going to be building settlers / workers, then a granery.
Otherwise a barraks.

I alway build the cheapest military unit for military police happiness reasons, except late in the game when I have plenty extra units, I'll build a Temple or library if I'm scientific for culture reasons and move units to that city.

Workers, workers, up until i get a good natwork of roads, the first thing a city builds is a worker, beacase it can increase the shield output to make building other things easier.

It just depends, first city in the game, always build an exploring unit, otherwise warrior then granary, or warrior then temple for border city.
