It's probably your firewall. Check whether you have given Civ (and Gamespy or whatever linkage site you employ) permission to access the Internet.

Based on a recent experience, I thought I would share a few things

Regardless of what you think your problem may be with your computer, make sure you actually run memtest when you experience a memory allocation or a driver failure.

For the last 2 months, I've been tweaking with driver versions and settings in CivIV to finally realize, this week, that the problem might be elsewhere. I ran memtest and what do you know, one of my memory dimm is faulty. For some reason, the obvious problem answer is right in front of us, but we just don't see it.

Anyway, good luck in your defect hunting and keep an open mind in your investigation, you never really know what the problem really is until you finally find it.

alright.... i bought this game yesterday (just civ iv, not warlords)... and it played fine last night and earlier today... but then i just got on and clicked "check for updates" where it told me a new patch was available... 1.74 i think. so i downloaded it and installed it... but now whenever i try to start the game an error message comes up saying "This application vehas failed to start because D3DX9_32.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." So to re-install i have to uninstall... and when i tried that i got another error saying that i should finish any previous setups and close other programs. so i restarted to make sure everything was complete and went through it all again, same results. i think its a directx file so i reinstalled that but to no avail. so it tells me to re-install, but doesnt let me do that. it seems like this new patch (of which i havent seen posted anywhere) just screwed up my game. please any help would be great.

UPDATE: i tried to install the 1.61 update but it wouldnt work because i have a newer version. i also downloaded the d3dx9_32.dll and the game looked like it was going to start, going through the loading and the "init xml" stuff, but then came up with an error saying "error loading shader libraries." i really liked the game and would like to get it back up and running.

I loved CivIII and have been in the process of trying to install CivIV for at least a week now...am about to return my second video card b/c it does not have T&L hardware...but then I read some of the posts and apparently, some people are successfully playing the game without the T&L? And if so, my current card is a Diamond Stealth Radeon 9250 PCI Version 256 MB. Has anyone been able to play with this card?

Peace,

I have the same problem with this new patch. When I went to multiplayer today it said I must have this new patch to continue. Before I downloaded the patch I was checking out the forum and all the talk was about problems with this new patch. When I ran into the same problem as you I came to this forum to see if anyone knows what's up. The problem with this patch seems to affect everyone. I'm shut down until I can figure it out.

I've updated my graphics drivers, direct X, everything, and still get this "error loading shader libraries" too. Is NO one else having this issue?

this is what i got from 2k and it worked.

"Hello

Please go to the following website www.microsoft.com/directx and download the latest version of directx this will fix the issue"

i dunno how it didnt work when i tried that before... but im back up and running.

Thanks. The directX 9c version whatever works! I had to hammer the ms website a couple or 8 times before it would let me download, but now all is good.

Thanks again!:)

I am desperate and in need of help!

Recently I upgraded my computer and finally have a system that exceeds minnimum (and recommended) requirements so I started playing Civ IV. The problem I am experiencing is that when the game starts to get busy with many other Civs (around the 1500s) the game freezes for about 2 minutes and then the computer restarts itself. When I go back into CIV IV I may get past that point but it happens again. I have removed the game and re-installed it and I have downloaded the 1.61 patch. And the same thing still occurs.
I am running a AMD Athalon 64x2 Dual 2.01 G with 896 M of RAM (128m used for onboard video) with a video card being a NVidia 6100nForce405.
I am using all the latest drivers.
Any suggestions?

well your video card isnt the fastest today and your ram isnt very much. I would focus on these points. set all video settings low in civ4 and in your video software (opengl d3d). Make as much ram free as possible.

I downloaded the second direct x thing on the main page because direct 9xc or whatever didn't run. I downloaded it, extracted the files, and ran DXSetup. Now Civilization 4 runs, when before this it didnt. Previously i had the "D3DX9_26.DLL" problem, but now that is gone.

However, a new one has just arisen. I can get into Civ 4, but when i try to log into multiplayer. the game freezes, and i have to shut down my computer to get out of it.

Does anyone have a solution?

Downloading ther 9xc Direct fixed the problem for me but my son still had problems after doing this. His game doesn't freeze up but he gets some kind of source code not found error. I'm not a geek so i don't know the anwers. I told him to register at civfanatics and post his problem here. A lot of smart people here. This patch has caused a lot of people a lot of problems.

you need to learn more about your computer.

if you're running a mac, i dont know if thisll work (i dont even know if civ 4 runs on mac).

My Computer -> Add or Remove Programs -> Civ 4 -> Uninstall.

However, you don't need to uninstall. You need to get DirectX 9c.

Question for anyone who might be able to help - just bought the Beyond the Sword expansion today, installed it and upon running the graphics (even the intro videos) are so stretched out that I can only see the left half of each screen!

I've got a 128Mb NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 running Direct X 9.0c with screen res at 1023x768.

Never had this trouble with Warlords, so hopefully someone can help me!!!
