So, I downloaded the 1.74 patch...
my direct x 9.0C is up to date...
but when i try to play the game, it begins to load...but then the screen flickers constantly for a good 5-10 minutes...then it shows an error...

says:
Initialize Renderer failed. Check DirectX Installation, Latest Graphics Drivers and Graphics Setting
Parameters:
-width = 1280
-height = 720
-flags = 0xc
-hwnd = 0x980408
- adaptrid = 0
- deviceid = 1
Error:

then a click OK button...

please help, this is really a pain...

I have read the last 35 pages and find no reference to this problem. I am running an amd 5000+, nvidia 590 chipset, sli board in a single gpu mode, 8600 gt video (256), 22 inch monitor, 2 gigs of 800 ddr, vista buiseness(sp).

I have the latest video drivers(9/17/07), updated cpu bios, updated game patches (3.13).

vanilla civ iv runs with the 1.61 patch just fine. I load BTS or the 1.74 patch and I get the shader file error. Vista will not let you force dx9 but the files are in the winsys dir. I have tried to adjust my shader values with nvhardpage but to no avail. It seems some people running vista ultimate are not having any problems and new games like civ rome and pirates run just fine.

is this my problem or does it belong to nvidia, firaxis, or windows. I'm two steps from f-disk and reinstall but that seems a little extreme

Hello all!
I had a 128 MB NVidia card, and the game went slow but fine.
I decided to change my old graphic card for a new one...and my problems started!
I buyed a ATI Radeon PRO 1600 (256MB), and I have some problems:
1.- I can not install the latest drivers as the render crashes.
2.- I can play with an old driver (version 8.263.0.0), but I can not see the unit's stack.
It' s a serious problem, as it's impossible to know how many units I've got, and where...
I've attached a sample picture.

If anyone reads my posted question I quoted above and wanted to reply, I got this already:
My best solution, (found on other threads), is to let it go. Ignore the Error 1706 pop up on 1.74 patch install. Click OK. Let patch install go to completion. Then play Civ. No noticable problems yet. Should you want to uninstall, and can't, pop in Disc 1, click the setup.exe icon and follow the directions. Send any new error messages in an email to 2K tech support.

Felt I need to reply to my own post since I posted my question on several threads. :crazyeye:

(other posters on this forum continue to have problems, cant even play when they install patch 1.74 :yuck:

Would very appreciate if you look at my problem and help to solve the issue. I am really want to join "map/mod builders club" (

, have a few ideas but failed even to start creation of map. I have carefully learn Gale's turorial and started to draw a map. I start custom single-player game, choose continents, tiny size, define 3 nations and start game. Immediately I launch the WBuilder. I delete all units, change the plots to ocean, create 2-3 islands, put units and even cities, put some resources and save the map. (I tried to save it in different paths: Public Maps in My documents as well as on C:\\programm files\Sid's Civilization\Public Maps, the result is the same). Then I exit from the game, re-launch it again. I can see my map in list of scenarios but when I try to load this game I get a crash (comp is staying for forewhere). Then I look into the file of my map by Notepad and see that it is not complete. It looks like below:

So you can see that there is no map at all: no StartPlot-EndPlot, there is only one Player, etc.
How it can be?
I use official russian localized game, I am playing it for a while and generally during a game there are no issues at all. It works properly. The only thing is this WorldBuilder issue.
May be I do something stupidly wrong? May be I shell change some settings in .ini file (I put cheatcode to chipotle, but it did not help)

I just downloaded patch v1.74. After it downloaded, I tried to go into the game but a thing popped up that said this.

"This application has failed to start because D3DX9_32.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Should I re-install Civ 4 or is their another solution?
Any help would be appreciated.

It means you don't have the latest directx repackage release.

Grab it here;

and drop it in here;

Win XP PRO SP2 Greek

I tested the disk in my brothers pentium4 and installs fine there :cringe:

Heya all!
Me and my mate need some help we are having some multiplayer broblems in civ4!
At start when we played this game it worked but just now a couple days ago the multiplayer didin't work... we can't connect to each other "cannot connect the host". We just don't know what to do help us!

Just a possibility, but have either of you changed anitvirus settings? Firewalls can keep the other computer out.

Alternatively, if you are using a wire for a Direct IP connection, you may find it helpful to disable (only while you're playing the game of course!) any wireless connection you have to the internet, as this can also block the connection.

My Game was working perfectly the first few days... but then i attemped to use the mutliplayer online thing, and it prompted me to download a patch. After the patch was done i tried to load my game up again and all i got was:
"This application has failed to start because D3DX9_32.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
I tried to re-install but i couldnt find anyway to un-install the game. So i tried the Add or Remove programs, but when i clicked remove the game a pop-up tells me that i need to make sure Civilization isnt running, and it isnt.. So im really annoyed and confused. Please help. :confused:

One thing I find useful if the computer for some reason thinks an application is running when it isn't, is simply to restart the computer. You could try that.

OK I installed the game, ran into disk 2 problem. I solved this by copying all disks into the same folder on my hard drive and installing from their. Then I got to play, tried to do a multi game online and was prompted to install the patch. I installed the patch and had the dll error, fixed that by the advice of Soduka (Thanks) but now I have ERROR LOADING SHADER LIBRARIES. How do I fix this.

Hey guys, I've got a huge problem! That is: Microsoft Vista! I installed the game, downloaded the patch (1.61) but everytime I want to start the game it shuts down telling me that it didn't work anymore. I don't know what to do

it somehow still doesn't work. My computer tells me that a file called "python24.dll" doesn't work or something... would post you the exact text but it's in German... I doubt you understand German? ^^°
