Thanks Alamo, your thread helped completly! Had problem with entire background being black and problems with movies playing in stops and starts and game crashing randomly throughout the game and finally getting deep in the game to a point where every time you hit enter it would crash to desktop. Replaced my video card with a Radeon 9250 PCI card from CompUSA for $45 (after rebates) and that fixed everything. I can actually see land features and the ocean and borders! It's amazing!

Hi, im getting random crashes ever since patch 1.52 - teh game freezes and hardlocks anything from 5 mins to 2 hours into the game. I also get a squeal from the sound card on some crashes. Since i reinstalled my Audigy drivers i dont get the squeal but still it crashes. It worked fine in v1.0 and i got 3 games under my belt, but now i cant even get to mid-game without a crash and no save to load.

How do u switch your sound driver to the default MILES Fast 2D Driver, as recommended in the patch notes for possible sound card issues.

Shall I try installing the "stable" 1.09 Harkonnen version?

This problem seems quite non-specific, just a general crash with no clue as to why. As far as the checklist goes, ive done all driver updates, directx is 9.0c, changed my virtual memory pagefile to 1Gb, cleared my game cache and tried everything else. I've seen other people post with this crash in 2-20 turns problem but noone has posted a solution. Can anyone help?!

I see alot of ppl r having trouble with this game,... so Am I.
Managed too get the game working for a little time but the game has reached a point where it keeps restarting my puter. Tryed to create a log file to see where the error is comming from, but this is pointless as the machine dose not get time to put an entery into the file.

This is my problem....

My symptoms were different though... the whole PC freezes without the onscreen garbage - it's like a screenshot of Civ! I get random bursts of "static" through the speakers though (4 or 5 bursts randomly spread over every 20 or 30 seconds until I reboot).

Hello,

I recently purchased Civ IV and installed it on my machine, but when I tried to start the game a load screen popped up and that was it. The process went no further and after about 15 minutes I gave up and tried to open task manager to cancel the operation. Didn't work, the computer froze up instead, so I restarted.

I called the tech support line and we went through my system specs, deleted the temp items, disabled all start up items, and he suggested I download the 1.52 patch.

I did this, even reinstalling Civ IV and then applying the patch. I still get nothing but a load screen at start up. I looked through this topic, but it seems that everyone else with load problems at least gets past the load screen to something else...I never do.

Does any one have any idea how to get past this problem? I'd really love to start playing!

Gaeliceyes: The game setup info is encoded in XML, are u getting an XML parse error? There is a fix for it.

I went back to v1.09 and got a BSOD after a big of map exploration =)

Changed to Harkonnen v.1.09 and either his .dlls or the config changes he mentioned and the one for nVidia users fixed my problem. Played for hours with no crash last night but i shouldnt have to go back to v1.09 and use an unofficial patch.

Update: Yes, a working civ! No crashes anymore but graphical issues now, when i talk to leaders i see a background and floating eyebrows or moustaches, when i alt-tab the map goes black (WTM stated civ4 was using 256 of my 512Mb memory and only 10%cpu activity).

was in exactly the same position, purchased the radeon 9250 agp card (128mb) and it fixed everything as well. once installed, i loaded the newest drivers and the civ 1.52 patch which improved performance even further. now all movies and gameplay run flawlessly. goes to show that you only need to spend a little.

I am having the exact same problem as Gaeliceyes. Any advice on getting past the load screen would be appreciated.

My system should be fine - Dell XPS with 1 gig of ram, 256mb GE Force 6800, etc. I've played almost every game Sid Meier's ever done and cannot believe the troubles with this game!

I find it amazing that I am writing this post.

As I write it, I am hoping to be able to get into my PC using safe mode - but this appears to be hanging.

I am in IT. If I released a piece of commercial software with this many bugs I would resign in shame (though I would have to do so fast to avoid being fired)

I am simply amazed this got through QA.

At this point my machine is completely hung.

It started when the movie from stonehenge was trying to come up. It never did. I tried to exit civilization, and my pc crashed.

I am running an AMD at 2.0 GHS, 756 Meg Ram, 128 Meg Viedo Card, 80 Gig 7200 HD.

Help! Please!

I've been playing civ 4 since its official release with ctd occurring between 10 to 20 minutes continuosly and now I'm ready to kill.
This is beyond a joke. I reside in Melbourne Australia, I am willing to travel anywhere in Melbourne, and not only will I pay someone $100.00 if they know how to fix this ongoing problem but they will have my sincere appreciation and grattitude.

i was one of those unfortunate sools that didnt meet the minimum requirement of civ 4. So i went out and upgraded my computer. great right, wrong. somehow my civ4 cd is scratched and i refomented my hard drive, therebye wipping out the civ4 install. so now i cant install civ4, and i now am above the minimum requirements. so short of buying the game again do you have any suggestions? HELP im dying to play

I am having a problem once I get to around 1700 in the game. I have the recommended regs, but get a video mem error message. to be exact it gives a file and line #
"main\civilization4.bak\SDKs\Gamebryo2_0\CoreLibs\Nidx9Renderer\NiDX9VBManager.cpp,Line:1018"

Sometimes the line # or file changes but I'll post my DXdiag and hopefully someone can help me

All I can get from TechSupport is "upgrade your drivers" and "upgrade the game". I already did both before the problem arose.

Good...and bad. Good that I'm not the only one. I wasn't sure if that was the same message. I saw the render and the ATI probs, but I also upgraded my drivers and the 1.52 patch. And bad b/c that's all they have to say?????

I tried to install directx 9.0c several times but dxdiag says me that I still have directx 9.0b version.
if anybody can tell me what is my problem, I will appriciate it.
