Fix-It List

Why does the game crash after a few minutes?

I bought Civ. 4 some time ago, and I have yet to get it to work on any computer. I've tryed it on three computers, two of my uncles and my own and it always makes the computer crash. It never plays long, it only works for a few minutes or so. My computer is an AMD 3500+ 64 bit, 6600GT 128MB video card, 512MB of ram, 74GB Raptor Hard drive, and.. Yeah, I think thats all that I need to say.. The computer is more then good enough to run the game, so why won't it work? :(

I had the same problem with the game crashing. I bought another gig of ram & no more crashes for me. Have 1.5 gigs of ram in my system now.I also have the 6600GT 128MB card. Mine's a Leadtek so I used the drivers off their site.

Also disable all start-up programs
Less is better cause Civ 4 sucks alot of memory & resources. 512mb is'nt enough to run this game....seriously. I also ditched Norton AV,(resource hog) for Avast Anti-virus,which is free.

Just because it says 512mb for minimum specs don't make it so .....trust me on this, Good Luck

Hello, I am new for the game and have following problem:
When I completed the installation and try to start the game the message is
coming: "This application has failed to start because D3DX9_26.DLL was not
found. Re-Installing the application may fix this problem."
Any idea what might help (re-installation didn't fix the error)?

I have a problem with the maps. Sometimes the map is only black and you can hardly see the units and cities, but sometimes when you move your mouse to the right spot the color comes back and everything is great. I have all the requirments but I think the problem is in my processor a Radeon 7500. Is it good enough or no?

Hi. Have a problem when trying to launch the game.

When the initial loading screen appears, it gets as far as check xml, then it disappears and nothing else happens.

I enabled logging to try and find the problem and when i opened the init log, this is the error it reported

[1110.625] DBG: NOT Using XML cache, failed to find crc.dat file

Any ideas what the problem is? Bought the game a couple days ago and dying to play it!!

Thanks in advance

Steve

My computer shuts off within 5 minutes of playing and never displays an error message. I have tried a hundred fixes, but it keeps doing the same thing. I have a X800XT AIW. Does anyone have any advice?

So I've got the Radeon 9600, and I've done the rip/replace and the artpack fix-and still no luck.

I'm about to tear my hair out, so if anyone could offer anything else, I'd appreciate it.

I just bought the game today, the installation initializes fine, but when i insert the second disk it starts to read the disk then pops up a message "Feature Transfer Error - Default Feature- Catastrophic error". When I access the cd outside of the install program it just comes up as a 646mb Winrar Archive file, any ideas? I really want to get started playing.

Please Disregard my previous quote listed here...
I uninstalled the game, and reinstalled, and patched directly to 1.61 from the 1.00 install and did not get the problem with the reinstall and repatch to reinstall. :)

Sid Meier's Civilization 4 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Send error Report / Don't Send.

My graphic card is:

NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440

I have a problem with intermittently losing rollover text and windows not gaining focus properly. It happens with the right mouse menu option enabled and after loading a game.

See here:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=151551

Anyways I (incorrectly) assumed that this minor but supremely irritating(when the rest of the interface is so nice) would be fixed in patch 1.52, then I assumed the next would fix it. I was wrong.

So anyway any xml/code hacking wizards out there want to give it a shot at fixing? Because it seems like it completely missed Firaxis's radar.

I have a Geforce FX go5200.

Has the go dark and slow down problem. Does anyone have a fix for this yet..

I have no problems at all (after 1.61 patch of course) with only 512 MB at Sepron 2300 and GF Ti4200 Video Card (128 MB)
avast, mcafee firewall always on, local network active. So I think it's definitely not a memory or overall hardware strength problem. Might be sofware conflicts (windows, video drivers?)

Hi,

I used to play Civ4 on our old computer and it ran fine (if a bit slow), but a few weeks ago we bought a new computer -
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ dual core
Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT 128 MB (current driver installed 84.2)
1GB Ram
running Windows xp home edition (hebrew edition)
Game patched 1.52 in the begining, now patched 1.61

Now the game start crashing from time to time to the desktop at no discernible pattern.

After reading the forums I have 2 guesses as to the possible cause of the problem and I wonder if anyone else has encountered these causes and can confirm or maybe offer a solution.

First cause that I can think of is - I very naively installed a game containing Star-Force disk protection that caused a lot of problem with games running from the CD like Civ4 - now that game is patched so as to bypass the starforce protection and I cleaned the registery of all mention of it, and that game runs fine (without reading from CD).

Second possible cause I thought of after reading the forums and that is AMD processors - I seem to encounter more AMD systems with problems than I would think is normal compared to their share in the gaming systems.

I would be very happy if anyone could offer me a solution to this problem of CTD without any apparent pattern.

Thanks!

I didn't see anything on the list about multiplayer problems. When I try and log on to the multiplayer through the game nothing happens. There is no error message or loading bar that shows up, the game just acts like I didn't hit the log in button. I am wondering if anybody knows what the problem might be. I've disabled my firewall, so it isn't that. Please help, thanks.

Hi, I'm having troubles getting the game to work.
When we try to start the game, it comes up saying "Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application". I however have the version with just one DVD, no CD-ROM... We were experiencing this problem for a while, we even returned the game and got a new one, but it still didn't work. I tried getting no-cd patches and they worked, but we couldn't play online because there wasn't one for the latest version. Then when I finally updated it and would try to get it working from the DVD, it did! I dont know what happened! Anyway, it was working fine untill yesterday, the computer was beeping when we turned it on (we were installing a network card) and I remembered that it was a similiar noise to when the DVD Drive was set to secondary but it needed to be primary, or something along those lines, so we disconnected the dvd and cd cables, and started up, it wasn't those that were the problem. Anyway, we finally got it up and running, with the cd and dvd cables back in, but the game wont run now. The same problem... I think perhaps I figured out how to fix it last time (I dont have a good memory), but after taking out the cable, it 'reset' the settings back to default, or something like that, thus leaving me in the same situation.
I do not have Nero or any virtual drive installed either.

Does anyone have any ideas whatsoever?...
I know there has been alot of threads regarding this problem, but I couldn't find one with a clear answer.

P.S. When I use the no-cd crack for the latest 1.61, after the year 1220 AD, the game automatically closes.

I'm having the same problem here, ATI X850XT... computer shuts down *hard* without any error message... just *poof* shutsdown. didn't have any problems prior to 1.61...

Krashlog is right. And the guy above who said that the problem happens more often in AMD-based PCs is wrong.

I have a Intel 3.0Ghz P4 HT with 1Gb Corsair RAM, and a GF 6800GS 256MB, and the problems are the same: about 10 min or so of gameplay, the game CTD without any error msgs.

Like Krashlog, I had no problems running the game until I decided to patch it to version 1.61. With this patch, the game runs faster and smoothy, until it crashes without mercy, like I said before.

The 1.52 patch give me a stable gameplay, although it runs slower than the newest patch. When I tried to patch the game to v.1.61 and tried to continue with my last 1.52 savegame (already discovered all the advances, year 2079, huge map), the game refused to load it, crashing to desktop again.
I think this RAM-bug talk may be the answer.

Sorry for posting again. But I now think that the RAM is not the core of the problem, since I confirmed that with the 1.61 patch the game use much less RAM to run (I took a look at the device manager: about 350-400 MB of RAM usage).

What the hell...I think that the Firaxis' developer team must talk about it. AFAIK, there is a lot of people having the same issue, and seeking for help.
