A number of people complained that in early versions of Vanilla you could tell the outcome of a battle before the animation finished by looking at the health value for the unit which was updated immediately.
I noticed that the same thing is happening when a unit with Flank attack ability attacks a stack with siege units. If the attacking unit will survive the battle the message is shown immediately, before the animation finishes.
