i dont know why but it bothers me so much that the world is flat and you cannot like in civ circumvent the world. Does anyone know if that will change or is it too much work to code?

The game has a deeper focus on the old world. So the setting of the game is the Middle East and Mediterranean.

Last time I checked you couldn't go from Babylon directly to Iberia the back way.

so we are ok that babylon assyria and the roman empire are at the same time period in the same game and can go to war but we draw the line at limiting map functions?

Yes, because the way the game is structured it's supposed to take place in one area. It's not meant to represent the whole world (unlike Civ), so there's no wrapping. There are events that reference distant lands, for example.

At the scale Old World is set, the entire world would be about 1200x bigger. Seems unwieldy. But I do understand, because I very much dislike maps with an edge also.

It would be nice to have as an option, but it's not a big deal as I thought it would be (I dislike edge borders on land as well).

Go onto the official discord there's a map making group there already. They might make an earth map for you.

Yeah the maps in the game not wrapping is garbage from a gameplay perspective.

Would Chess be a better game if it wrapped around the edges or is it garbage the way it is? I think edges suits this game rather nicely, wrapping certainly doesn't. Ancient Egypt and Babylonians didn't do much circumnavigating. I could see perhaps some mechanic for "edge" cities to perform some kind of long distance trade missions (eg. with prosperous distant civilization). There could also be a barbarian invasion mechanic having barbarians spawn from the edges in the vein of the original Avalon Hill Civilization Board Game (which I absolutely love btw). Edges provide strategic and tactical decisions in their own way.

chess is not a 4x strategy game. poor comparison.

The game isn't fun for me when I know I can box an opponent into a corner of a map and defeat them cause they just can't expand anywhere. weak gameplay mechanic. I don't care about this "the ancient world couldn't circumnavigate" excuse.

Well, ancient civilizations didn't really "escape" that much either. They stayed put with their cities and fell with them. I'm really sorry you are having such a bad time playing this game. Hopefully it can be modded for your needs. Me, I'd rarther see the convoluted experience expanded upon for a more realistic Bronze Age Experience. See some of my suggestions above.

This doesn't bother me, but I imagine having natural barriers at the edges of maps might alleviate this problem. Stuff like mountain ranges, endless desert/tundra, coastline etc. Which would in turn allow for not fully rectangular maps.

This is a great idea! That is what I'm pretending being outside the borders of the map anyway, unhospitable uncivilized wasteland and barbarian hordes :) It could even be a "zone" where your units would just lose hp's and die off (long away from home, little food and water, strange lands, barbarians) and no coty cites. Or it could be just cosmetics, like a rigid wall of mountains and deserts.

Still, for me it doesn't really matter. My imagination goes beyond the borders of the map! :)

I'm sorry the game doesn't fit what you wish it to fit. The game design has a certain direction and I do not see wrapping maps being implemented.

All I can advise is go to the official discord to the #suggestions channel and post your map wrap suggestion there. The Devs are actively reading and assessing those suggestions. Some are already being implemented.

That's a very good idea. I would actually make it like for example a "Silk Road Outpost", in which you gain a bonus if you connect your capital with a road to it, same for the barbarian spawn points, so it has more flavor.

I'm okay with the world being flat and constrained, it makes sense for the scope and scale of the game. Some sort of off screen foreign trade mechanic would be awesome and a less jarring transition graphically would be appreciated.

Just want to point out, whilst the underlying map is a rectangle, the playable area can be any shape you want. This reduces the illusion of hard-limit rectangles. See the image below where the "corner" of the map is not so much a corner, but restricted due to the huge desert. The same will occur with large oceans, mountain ranges, etc.

You just seem to constantly be dunking on the game. If it's not for you, that's fine.

And I don't think your argument here particularly holds water for this game because expansion is limited anyway.

I can see this becoming an issue for mod trying to expand the game to and after the Renaissance era, but yep, world wrap doesn't make sense at the current scale of the game.

The irregular limit is a nice touch BTW.
