what exactly is "a lake"? is it 1 tile of water? or an oasis? something else? I'm confused as neither of these are very common and I can't see how it would be very useful.

I must be missing something.

A lake is a body of water of 10 tiles and less.
An oasis is something different. It's a resource, but you can still farm the tiles adjacent to an oasis like you can with a lake.

When you play certain maps, there will be more lakes. You'll notice its output as 2 food and 1 gold i think. Its not connected to the bigger "ocean" areas, but exists in the middle of land. Its a good bonus when you are starting out developing when you don't have a worker to improve the land.

it's 9 or less tiles.

yeah, pretty rare unless you choose the "lakes" map.

if you happen to be oceanside as well, a floating gardens + lighthouse can make lakes 4 :c5food: 1 :c5gold: which is decent. that's even rarer though.

Yes, you're right, I looked it up in GlobalDefines, max area size for a lake is 9.
A lighthouse indeed not only adds 1 food to ocean tiles, but also lakes, despite its description. That would actually make 5 food total with the Floating Gardens. :)

I don't find lakes extremely rare, a standard pangaea, continents or fractal map will probably have an average of some 4 lakes or so.

I've also had some lakes on Archepello maps as Russia & China.

That lake when I was playing Russia was very useful since it was surrounded by tundra hills.

Actually it's not the lake bonus that makes the Floating Gardens great, it is the 15% food bonus. It is calculated based on the the total food production of the city, not the surplus.

You can build the Floating Gardens in cities that founded are next to lakes, rivers and oasis. Basicaly if the city has fresh water access.

A lake of extended size pretty much sucks unless you are Aztec. 2 :c5food: and 1 :c5gold: does not make for a viable workable tile much past the first few turns, and even then you can probably do better.

Having 1 lake tile next to your capital can be good because it lets you build a garden. I guess one could also help you defend a city a little better too.

Light house does not effect lakes
Floating gardens give lakes +2 food. So +4 food total. This is quite strong early in the game.

Lighthouse actually does affect lakes if the city is also coastal, it makes them 3 :c5food: and 1 :c5gold:.

Heres an image I posted in the wonders thread where a lake tile was also boosted by a lighthouse:

Hum. They might have changed it or it doesn't stack with floating gardens. I remember I had floating gardens + lighthouse one game awhile ago and all my lakes were +4 and not +5.

I have such a city in my current game and indeed get the lighthouse boost. Really nice city since it also has 2 fish, a bunch of hill tiles, and Old Faithful.
